    I have a Spellbound Camellia in a container. I bring my Camellia inside my room during the days where the temperatures drop bellow 32°. This year, I have mine getting light from a tall light tower. It is a houseplant for most of the winter season. I do bring it outside during my off days. I've had her for three winter seasons like this.

    Hi Lina. This was a very in-depth info on camellias. I planted two Spring blooming camellia japonica last Spring & sadly all their new buds got destroyed from the recent cold blast. Though they are evergreens, they are not that winter hardy. Fortunately mine can handle cold down to zone 6 & I live in zone 7b here in NY Queens. Your doing everything right since your camellias look amazing!

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Sammy ☺️ Oh I’m sorry you lost the buds and didn’t get to enjoy their beauty. That happened to me too a couple years ago. They were quite young then. Over time I tried different ways to protect the buds and flowers because even though these shrubs have nice and glossy leaves and are an attractive bushy evergreen, I grow them mainly for their flowers. I have a few other evergreen shrubs in the yard to enjoy in winter but none of them are winter-flowering, only camellia. And the last few winters have been so unpredictable, as soon as November rolls around, I take my ladder out and hang the tarp right away! My camellias are my babies haha

    Lina, that was a wonderfully informative video. I live near Wenatchee and here, we get down into way below zero temps in the winter. I have a Japonica ( I believe "Mrs. Tingley"}. Last winter I lost all of the flowers to cold, I assume. Just wanted you to know that I agree with you about these and I just love them. Just sorry it took so long to find them.

      Oh I’m sorry you lost all the flowers last winter. I get so sad when that happens… it’s a whole year’s worth of work without nothing to show for :( but when it’s too cold, it’s too cold I understand. I hope you get to enjoy the flowers this year!

    I garden in zone 8b in south central Georgia. I planted 2 new camellias this year, Yuletide, outside in the landscape. I seriously thought about putting them into pots.

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому

      What’s winter like in Georgia? Do you have to do much winter protection when they’re in the ground? Our winter here in PNW is mild-moderate on most days (night temperatures usually stay just above freezing) but for the last 3 winters, I feel like it’s getting colder and colder with more snowstorms each season. And each time depending on when it happens, it always kills of any swollen buds and flowers of my camellias :(
      I love Yuletide by the way. I think it’s just awesome to have red flowers blooming right around Christmas.

    Should Camillias be caned & tied when in tubs?

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  9 місяців тому +1

      It’s entirely up to you. I don’t support mine when they’re not in flower. The stems are sturdy enough to hold the leaves but when the plant is in flower, the branches can get heavy and droop, making it hard to view the flowers. I usually give them a little support then.

    Hello, I love Camellias, I just got one and it's growing great I'm just scared to change the pot, but soon I'm going to have to do it. Where do you get your camellias?

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому +1

      Hi Sara! Don’t be afraid. Pull your camellia gently out of the old pot and pop it in its new pot with new soil, add a bit of soil acidifier, fertilize with acid-loving plant food, water deeply and mulch the top and voila you’re done! You got this 👍
      My camellias are from a company called Monrovia. I thank them for selling happy healthy plants. Best of luck with your camellia 🪴🌸🌿🌹

    I am in zone 6b....do you think it is good to plant camellia in ground?

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому +3

      Hi Minh! Thank you for both your comments :) How cold does it get in winter in zone 6b? So whether it’s gonna be good for you to grow camellias depends on what you expect from these plants, I think. For me, I grow them mainly for their flowers so winter protection is a must to guarantee that I’ll have these beautiful blooms to enjoy. When there’s a cold snap where temperatures drop below freezing, say down to low-mid 20s for longer than a few days, and if it happens during the time my camellias have swollen buds or full flowers, I’ll begin to see some damage ranging from slight to severe burn to the buds and flowers which can result in them browning and eventually falling off. If the damage isn’t too serious, the younger buds will still open - it’ll just take them longer as they get through the growth stunt. But at that point, it’s kind of a gamble which is why I always protect my camellias in winter.
      If you ask me if I’d grow camellias only for their evergreen leaves, my answer is no. I grow them for their winter flowers. I have many other evergreens that I can enjoy in my zone that are much hardier than camellias.
      So if I were you, I’d ask myself a few questions. The first one being “what is your reason for wanting to grow camellias?”
      If you want to grow camellias to have an evergreen shrub to enjoy, or maybe to create a privacy screen, then it could be a good choice if you like their appearance. Their leaves are glossy green and look attractive all year round. Even if you lose buds/flowers to cold snaps, chances are the plant itself will survive if you plant in the ground rather than in pot because roots are better protected that way. But if your answer is for the flowers, then you’ll have to ask yourself if you’ll be willing to give the plant protection during cold spells, like moving it indoors, or wrapping with burlap, etc.
      I’m sorry… super long answer but I love talking about plants and exchanging thoughts. Good luck if you decide to grow it. I actually hope you do. It’s such a beautiful and rewarding plant 😊🌿🌸

    I intend to take my container grown camellias and put them in smaller containers to make them lighter and easier to move. I will then put them in the ground to protect them from winter in zone 7A. I don't anticipate problems in transferring them but would be interested if you see a danger. Thank you.

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  9 місяців тому

    what soil yu recomed for potting camellia

    • @Linasgardens
      @Linasgardens  Рік тому

      Any neutral potting soil would do if you add soil acidifier. Or you can buy ericaceous soil from the beginning if you have it available for purchase.
