  • Does your duty belt sag down on you and shift around while you are out trying to make a buck? Here is one solution you should look into!
    Featuring:
Velcro brand industiral hook and loop
    www.velcro.com/...
Uncle Mikes "mirage" basket weave duty belt
Uncle Mikes velcro inner duty belt
Police, Security, public safety, sheriffs, probation and parole officers have a hard enough time setting up their work every day carry (edc) in a way that is effective and comfortable while minimizing the interferences between all the necessary equipment. This video addresses one irritating problem, duty belt sag.
If you've ever had to set up and wear a duty belt you have likely had to deal with a sagging duty belt. There are many solutions out there right off the shelf. But, a little DIY adding of Velcro to your duty belt solves many of the problems that traditional solutions leave in their wake.
This is one method of one Police Field training officer (FTO).

The one down side is, the hooked side of the velcro tares up the belt loops on your uniform trousers.

I do this as well...but I also use it on my uniforms. I apply the soft side to my shirt, and iron the back, causing the glue to soak through the material, and create a permanent adhesion. I apply contact cement to the pants, in the correct position, and stick the "rough" side to the belt line of the pants, creating a uniform that never comes untucked...kind of like the tactical "jumpsuits"... Just gotta be sure you have everything where you want it...or it gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours. But when you find the sweet spot, you have the "pressed" look the entire shift. You can readjust later in the shift when you call out to "drop off an item and do paperwork" at the station latrine...lol

@@lupusvenator4701 Can you explain this more? Did you iron the Velcro on the bottom of the shirt and the contact cement on the pants? Do you put the contact cement on the Velcro itself and how do you adjust it later? Doesn’t the contact cement make it not be able to be adjusted?

I'll start of by saying I am not a big guy, roughly 5'7" 180 lbs. I was issued a velcro inner belt with my duty belt.... after month it found a home in my locker never to return to be waistline again. The velcro never stayed in place and made noise constantly. All that being said, the biggest issue was that the inner belt is way too thick and kept everything about a 1/4 inch or so off the body creating even more sag. It drove me nuts! So I bought a pair of tactical tailor suspenders ($50) and 5.11 zero g plates ($100). Problem solved. Cheers! Be safe brother!

I retired from law enforcement in 2005, and used a velcro outer duty belt, and inner belt. What i found over the years is that junk would clog up the velcro making it almost impossible to fully use the belt, even though the belt was still serviceable.

I have a husky/german shepherd, so half my life is devoted to removing dog hair from velcro and midnight navy uniforms.
Run the end of a nail file or small flathead screwdriver back and forth gently through the hook velcro, lifting crap up and allowing you to pull it free with your fingers, without damaging the hooks.
Leave the hook and loop pressed together when not in use, this prevents crap from getting into them in the first place.
Finally, a saddlery or the type of business which makes canvas covers for truck beds, patio furniture, hay covers etc, can unpick the stitching and sew new velcro onto a duty belt much more cheaply than replacing the belt.

I work private in-house unarmed solo security/nightwatch at an industrial facility in New Zealand.
Have used a dual-ply rigger's belt with cobra buckle up until now because it's visually less in-your-face and confrontational, and without a sidearm and mags, it suffices for the weight of radio, flashlight, rescue knife, key silencer/retractable lanyard.
This means threading my belt through trouser loops each day, pausing to thread pouches/holsters at the appropriate gaps between trouser loops.
However, the Blackhawk latex glove/pager pouch and First Aid kit I just purchased have EXTREMELY tight rubberized slits that will crush and destroy the hook velcro on the rigger's belt if I try to feed the belt through the rubber letterbox slit each morning.
Am I correct in saying that if I get something like the 5.11 Sierra Bravo duty belt, I no longer have to put the individual pouches and holsters on every morning?
I will just take the whole outer belt off with pouches still on it, hang it on a chair, and in the morning I simply feed the inner belt through my fresh trousers, wrap the outer belt around it, press it down against the velcro, close the buckle, close the belt keepers, and I'm good to go?
I know you know what I mean when I say that looking like Rambo Cop is not in my or my employer's perceived best interests, I can see that an inner/outer duty belt would have practical/tactical advantages, but just how much more visually imposing is a duty belt over a rigger's belt, when the number of pouches/holsters remains quite low?
Feedback appreciated, much of your channel content is more entertainment than practical in my role, but I found myself subscribing anyway.... aaaand I finally replaced my giant gold dress watch with a digital G-shock after your watch video recently made me objectively consider the impracticality of the big analog beast I have endured for four years, so thanks for that, the Casio is much more practical on the job.

Just a different point of view, but when I went through my training, they advised against this. This is because if your dominate hand/arm became injured, you would be unable to draw your weapon with that dominant hand. If you use only belt keepers, you have some play in the belt and, with your non-dominant hand, can pull your belt and twist it around to orient your firearm closer to non-dominant side. With a hook-and-loop tape method of securing the belt, it truly does lock it in place, and you simply can't move it.
Many people practice shooting with their non-dominant side, and even firearm manipulation, but sometime forget to consider the options for getting that firearm into your non-dominant hand in the first place.
We all train for the possibilities, and also consider the probabilities, of any given situation. Take it for what you will. You configure your load that best suits you and helps to make you the best LEO you can be. Just throwing out some more information that I've learned along the way.
I love all your videos. Keep up the good work!

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 років тому +2

+Michael Richardson An excellent point and a real consideration to take into account when setting up a belt.
I currently use velcro plus keepers. We do yearly training where I'm at with non dominant hand skills. While the Velcro makes it harder to yank around it is still doable. That is for me. Clearly everyone's body shape and level of strength will change this dynamic.
Also of note is that I've yet to meet anyone who has had their dominant hand shot in a gunfight and had to draw offhand to continue the fight. I have, however, been personally present for several gun grabs where the cops gun ended up slid around behind him because the belt wasn't secured to his body well enough. Luckily we had mass on our side and everything came out alright. This,I'm sure, is area dependent, I imagine a boarder patrol guy working down south would be far more likely to get hit in the hand than fight over his pistol.
One solution, and I would argue a better solution than yanking your belt around, is to have a "robust" backup gun that is easily drawn with the non dominant hand. This solves not only the wounded dominant hand problem but also solves gun grabs where you are pinned to the ground, encourages the carriage of a BUG that one can actually fight with and forces you to practice using a pistol with your non dominant hand on a daily basis, even if only manipulating the gun.
For OPSEC reasons my backup gun arrangement was deliberately left out of the video. Rest assured, it is "robust".
It is always great to hear other folks perspectives on these issues. Thanks for watching and keep those comments coming!

Let's be honest, none of us are getting in better shape as we get older and we are all one good knee or back injury from being seriously out of shape.
It isn't such an insult though if it is true and relevant to safety. Getting to your gun with your off hand is a serious safety issue and worth talking about openly and honestly, even if it does ruffle some feathers. Guys need to be honest with themselves and their capabilities. They also need to actually try to do these things before the problem comes up on the street.

I ordered the velcro tape but haven't set it up yet cause I'm a procrastinator. But now that i think about it... don't see how effective this would be. Your equipment would slide too far and once you have to belt on you can't adjust it to make you feel more comfortable.
Do you have a fix for everything sliding around? Maybe wrapping thin tape around your equipment so they don't slide?

Michael Lopez There’s plenty of people who work as “security” that neither have patches nor a guard card in CA. Although, I would advise you not to do volunteer patrols as you’re more likely to run into legality issues of getting involved and having to argue it out in court that you were “not looking for a fight”. If you want to be great help to the police / security, be a good witness. Also since you’re young (assuming bc explorers are young), your enthusiasm for LE is great, but don’t jeopardize your career field for something risky like what you’re proposing. Get that degree, get some mentors to prep you for LE, and stay in shape, and don’t get in trouble!

Velcro starts to peel off in about a week

3M adhesion promoter. Wipe the area down with alcohol, apply the adhesion promoter and let it dry (well, tac dry), then apply the velcro. Going on 4 years since I did this and none of the velcro pieces have budged, let alone even think of coming off.

    • @nonanon666
      @nonanon666 5 років тому

Heat the adhesive side of the velcro with a lighter or heat-gun until it's bubbling before you press it on. It ain't going anywhere after that. Also, clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol or lighter fluid before attempting to glue anything to it. This method has kept a First Tactical document field organizer securely fastened to the lid of my 5.11 patrol bag (I can lift the bag and contents with the document organizer, and it takes a really good yank to peel it off), and it has also kept Go-Pro mounts secured to my mountainbike helmet, with heavy objects like cameras and lights in the mounts. If it can hold up to downhill mountain biking at night, where your head is whipping around like crazy lighting up the corners, lines, and hazards, it'll hold up to patrol use.
