In Wis I used hardneck garlic. They survive the cold the best. And I also covered my garden with leaf mulch in the fall for many years. I think you'll have good results.
@togetherweharvest I only ordered 2 bulbs of Duganski hardneck, but several softneck. Then I realized that in my zone 7a, I should be planting hardneck in the fall. I can plant the rest in early spring. So I really need to find several more bulbs of hardneck. This will be my first year planting fall garlic. This spring, I experimented with softneck from Costco, and they did quite well.
