Why We Never (almost) Weed or Water our Garden. Here is Why...
Lots of thoughts when into your design. Great coup. Consider white FRP to cover the nesting box roof. It’s inexpensive and easy to work with. When the floor tarp wears out FRP would be a great replacement option.
Thank you so much, Corey!
The two large doors are a great idea. Much easier for coop maintenance.
Great Job Pete!😇
Very nice design.
I wish we had thought to put the nesting boxes outside the fencing as you did. It would have made things a lot easier. ♥
Could you post a plan and materials needed to build the coop?
First
I love around the 2:50 mark or so, this little pink hat comes strolling through the garden as you are speaking. I can hear humming. lol It soo cute.
This is what should be taught in kindergarten
I give you a suggection for strawberry that i've tried this year: paint little rock in red. Put them in your strawberry garden before the reel strawberry come red. The birds will try to eat them and will finally think: '' hum, that's not really good'' and they will not come back.
Gorgeous
Thank you
Thanks for sharing your tree limb trellis, it's something I'll keep in mind if we expand our garden, especially when growing vining squash like you are.
You’re welcome. I think you’ll enjoy the stability of the limbs for larger crops too
Bamboo works great for this type of trellis as well.
Yes it does. Most people need to purchase bamboo though.
This is a great video! Thanks for the tips! Your garden is amazing.
Thanks so much!
Thank you. I am looking forward to using my similar teepee trellis this year. Thanks for showing specifically how you tie and train the squash on them. Such a practical and inexpensive trellis!
Glad it was helpful! Have fun growing!
Well done ✅
Thank you
What about your soil? What’s the story?
It’s purchased in bulk from a local gardening/landscaping company. It’s a blend of compost and top soil I believe. Each fall, I top it off with chicken compost from our chickens right next to the garden
That’s an incredible garden and I love the philosophy on going through the grocery list and determining what can be grown and what does well on the property. We are homesteaders in Michigan and just started creating UA-cam content again after a few years off - we’d love to connect.
Thanks so much! Glad you’re back to making content again
I understand you completely. I have a 13x13 m garden. Nice garden.🎉
Thanks! I think it’s great how much someone can grow in smaller spaces
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Your garden is beautiful! I'm in WI also :)
Very cool! Thanks for watching
Hi from zone 5a, WI.
Oooh alrighty! Further south I suppose.
@@togetherweharvest Sauk Co.
Creating a video about how to feed a family with a 20x40 ft. garden provides valuable insights into sustainable living and self-sufficiency. It offers practical tips on gardening, harvesting, and maximizing the yield from a relatively small space.
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
Nice layout of your garden.
Thank you!
Wow!! Awesome! Thank you for the tour! I have learned a lot!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great garden. Where’s your fence? If tomatoes grow too tall you can fold them over the top and have them come down the other side. Or trim the bottom leaves and lower your string.
For some reason, we don’t have issues with animals. Luckily
Thanks for sharing 🙏
My pleasure
Thanks for sharing!!!
My pleasure!!
I’m in northern Minnesota zone 3 Asparagus does good with strawberries! I grew zinnias and cilantro in with my brassicas last year and they all did great and hardly any bug/pest issues at all
That’s good to know. It’s fun to intercrop! Good advice
Beautiful garden! I'm in Michigan zone 6. Is this the only garden (plus the two raised beds) where you grow food to feed your family for a whole year? Or do you have any other gardens or areas where you grow more food? Thanks
Yes, those are the only growing spaces for our produce that grows well/we eat a lot of. For example, we buy bananas, obviously because we can’t grow them here.
@@togetherweharvest Wow! That's amazing! Our growing space in our backyard is about that size and we're working on growing enough food for the year. Thanks for the inspiration.
It's not inflation it's corporate greed.
Please explain what you mean
I dried and ground the leaves into a powder. Went quick though.
Which leaves are you referring to?
Using gardening to tackle inflation at the grocery store really is the way go. I wish these young folks would get this but too many of them are just going to sit on tik tok whining about the cost of groceries.
I’m 29 and have a 5000 sq ft garden 😎 Actually more of my friends garden than not
That has been our philosophy for years. There is only so much we can control. Might as well grow food and rely less on others. No reason to allow others (mostly the government) to have control over us any more than they already do.
So many free resources out there. Excellent content 💯.
Thank you! Yes, with a little creativity and patience, find free resources is possible.
We are very much on the same level. Enjoying the binge listen while I get things done.
Excellent. Best of luck to you and your homestead.
Totally awesome! Will definitely be adopting some ideas from you. Thank you. Zone 4 Ontario here.
Cool cool - same zone!
With the mature trees to the west, do u get afternoon shade? Or how much full sun u get in a day?
Good observation. The 'main garden' is shaded around 4-4:30ish. It receives around 6-8 hours of sun throughout the day. Those trees to the west help tremendously because we do not need to water as much.
@togetherweharvest that's encouraging to hear. I'm only an hour or two south of you and I blame only getting 8 hours as reasons I struggle with some warm season crops that you seemed to do well with. My mature trees are to the east.
I squeeze carrots and bush beans in every open space i find in my garden. I don't usually have a designated spot for either. But I still have a ton of them every Summer.
That's a great way to do it. Carrots are excellent for that.
I have autoimmune diseases that zap my energy often. You and I have the same growing style, just for different reasons. By the time fall rolls around I'm so tired and exhausted, I like that I can leave my leeks, potatoes, sunchokes, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, etc in the ground until you snow is flying if i have to. I often toss my tomatoes into freezer bags, so i can make sauce & things over the Winter.
That's the way to do it. No need to rush to get everything done each Fall. I like that it takes the pressure off.
~waves~ helloooo from MN. It's good to find content creators who have a short growing season like me!
Agreed. Soooo many homesteading channels from people in warmer zones.
I think sun chokes are a must for any survival garden list. They can grow in almost any kind of soil, full sun, part sun, if you don't feel like harvesting them one year... The patch will just expand and you will have twice as many the next year. Start a patch in a part of your yard you aren't using for anything and then forget about them. And that is a reason why Egyptian Walking Onions would also be on my list of musts. They come back every year, they spread on their own, and they don't take up a lot of room. Both of them will give you food in the winter and the spring while you are waiting for other things to grow.
That is excellent information. Thank you so much for sharing.
I like the potatoes in the chicken run idea. I have had success with laying them on the ground (turn the sod over first) and then covering them with leaves.
Yes. And they are so easy to harvest.
I have tiny holes in the leaves of some of my plants. Any suggestions on how to tackle this???
I'm dealing with that right now on some plants. A few things... Mulch a lot around the plant - many bugs come from the soil and lay eggs in the soil near crops. I mulch really heavy around crops not doing well. Plant later on in the season, depending on the crop and how long your growing season is. Bugs are generally worse in the beginning and get better later on. Plant basil, marigolds and other flowers/crops that put off aromas that bugs dislike. Plant the crops randomly, like I show in this video. If a particular bug really like pepper plants, for example, there many only be 2 plants in that area that they find, rather than 20 or so. If they cannot find the other pepper plants, at least you're not dealing with pests on all of them. Lastly, don't use any pesticides and please do not kill spiders and other pest predators. Many bugs in gardens kill pests rather than become a pest themselves. Hope this helps.
@@togetherweharvestit definitely does! I’ll let you know how it goes. I have a lot of work to do moving everything around and making sure my plants will do well.
I don't see a fence. How do you keep the deer, rabbits, and racoons out?
That's the million dollar question. We have just about every animal you can think of roaming around our property but do not have problems with them in our garden. Can't explain why
Looking good!
Thanks for watching!
Love your garden design. Thank you for showing what you plant where...and why....makes good sense. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.🤠
Thank you. And you are welcome!
I like how you designed the outside border with logs, garden soil, marigolds and vining plant. Great use of space and logical design for keeping predators away and pollinators near! This is my first ear using wood chips and it’s working fine. I also read that strawberries can grow with garlic so I planted my first time strawberries there. Pinched off flower buds to encourage rooting and runners, and they are thriving! Great vid as always. What’s the hen’s name, who followed you around?
Thank you very much! Yes, we did not allow our strawberries to fruit and this year we’re getting quite a lot considering we don’t have too many plants.
We live in a camper. I’m a travel nurse. I wish campgrounds would let us have a community garden. Just a small plot to grow veggies. I have containers now. Two tomato plants, sweet red pepper and jalapeño.
When my parents lived in their rv, they had 4 large wooden raised beds they used and were able to grow a ton
Can you pull a trailer behind you? I wonder if the plants would grow with the change of climates?
Interesting! This opportunity should give you a chance to make it happen, even if it involved a few hurdles and lots of creativity.
