  • On April 12, 2011, Maurice Young checked himself into a local homeless shelter looking for a break from his life. What he didn’t expect to find was his life’s work. Maurice was never homeless, but since that day he has lived on the streets…by choice. Sometimes to help someone, you have to become one of them. From being kicked out of public places, sleeping on sidewalks, eating at soup kitchens, bathing in restrooms to actually getting arrested, Young has fully submerged himself into the homeless way of life. To what end has this sacrifice been made?
As a homeless Indianapolis native, Maurice has dedicated himself to promoting awareness of homelessness and the need for change regarding the mistreatment of those who call the streets home. He began his fight for the fair and equal treatment of the homeless in 2011. Maurice believes transforming public perception of homelessness will directly impact government legislation and local policies to improve the conditions of local communities.

Maurice seems like a latter day Demosthenes at one level.. he's kinda moved beyond the material anchors that surely most people need. Maurice you do seem to be unfolding a kinda Christ conscious- ness. You are a true king..a Philosopher King. It's hard not to be humbled by your courage and authenticity. 😀

I know him personally. He is a great man and you can not always look at the cover of the book on the outside you have to also look at the inside. I personally know what it is like to be homeless. i am homeless right now. I am married for the 2nd time and I sleep in a tent with my husband and my companion dog.

I watched a documentary (Under the Bridge) about Homelessness in Indianapolis and had to research Mr. Maurice Young who was featured in that same documentary. The man is very sharp & clearly is a natural leader with so much to give to his community as a whole (not just the homeless). Go watch that documentary if you haven't yet.

what people can do is learn about an actual cost efficient solution then
donate what they can from each paycheck to that solution. first we will
need to demand from governments different building codes for much
cheaper housing even such things as geodesic tents (glamping domes which
can be purchased for $600 in amazon and made for probably much less)
and abundance of de-privatized and de-comidified 300 sqft lots of land
that cant be taken from them. there's enough land and all the homeless
likely get welfare which can be deducted from to finance these living
    necessities.
lets vote and demand governments learn how to make money in every field
of service and product, people will fund the government in the form of
buying services and products when we vote on how they will serve us and
write laws, thus an all inclusive collective and community cycle.
the solution for homeless as well as affordable housing in is reforming
the building codes to allow tiny houses and lesser known and cheaper
building techniques (aircrete homes, 3d printed earth homes) as well as
allowing people to permanently camp on private property with the
    permission of the owner.
allocate like 500 sqft land, to every individual including children.
families would share their yard and kitchen.
enforce progress to be shared, technology, hardware and software to be
transparent and available to the government.
design people the freedom to choose any qualified job available and not
    need ones they dont want.
if civilization wasn't built with slaves then lets trust people will
choose to do the jobs we want and need still.
design thriving and abundance with the absence of doubt, disbelief, and
fear in your mind and with trust, belief and unconditional love in your
    heart.

I have a few issues with some of his actions. Shelter beds are not free. Each one is paid for and funded by private donations or government funding. They are also limited. If he did not need to stay in a homeless shelter, he should not have checked himself in. If he wants to sleep in the streets then fine, but don't utilize resources that aren't needed because your're going through a mid-life crises. It takes away resources from someone else who actually needed it. The work he is doing is great and I commend him for it, but there are things you need to think through and understand.

    • @aliciamcdowell7763
      @aliciamcdowell7763 7 років тому +2

He said he moved himself down to the local shelter because he knew no one would find him there, not because he lost everything. I work for a homeless coalition. There are homeless people who stay homeless for years. Not everyone is just going through a tough time. Some people have chronic issues. I'm not trying to be negative, but if he wants to continue to be helpful, move out the shelter and allow someone who needs the space to take it.

Actualy scarcity is something that Capitalist society wants you to believe- that we are all struggling in this life and that homeless people should be thankful for those beds, what they dont always tell you is that the people at the top of corporations are making 5000 to 50000 times more money than the regular worker and since 70 years ago. Criminal is not the right word for that....

Until you walked a mile in his shoes or anyones shoes your "opinion" is irrelevant...Whenever you get done with it this man right here is the definition of "man"..Pure character and I am homeless and I have figured out why many ppl that are considered financially stable and not having to worry about money look at some of us like we are a disease...Its becuz they have everything and they miserable..We have nothing and 95% of the time we happy..That pisses some folks off..

    • @leskobrandon691
      @leskobrandon691 3 роки тому +3

Wow Alicia! Another trying to find fault with this man's actions. He's taking a bed that someone else might need more. Desperate to attack. This man's actions obviously threatens something in certain people that make them actually find fault, wherever they can find it, or have to contrive in their minds a scenario such as hes taking a bed from someone who needs it more than he. One bed for a man who is lifting up others hardly seems like a tax on the shelter capacity as it seems to me his actions actually would help free up beds rather than create a shortage. I live in downtown Indianapolis and am familiar with both the homeless population, as well as the reasons the create homelessness to start with. This man is no burden to the shelter system. And btw, whether by choice or circumstance, shelters don't ask why you are there. They are there for anyone in need. A mid life crisis was mentioned is just as valid a reason as one addicted to drugs and unemployable. Incredible I find that this articulate man who is homeless by choice threatens something in people who too me, can't wrap their heads around such a decision when they sre in the throes of material consumerism!!

Con man ! ! ! Why is he wearing an improvised skirt? Decent clothing is available at multiple missions and outreach locations. Likewise, his lack of grooming is carefully contrived..
This is theatre, complete with costuming, script, and an actor. Could it be there is a bit of grant money involved?

Troubling you must find that someone was willing to walk away from the creature comforts and materialism that you covet so highly. It would appear to ne that you are threatened by the power he gained in his journey, thus you mock him. Sad indeed.
