Damn, there are so many potential times to damage the rim, but your expertise just made the item appear before you. As I watch you work through your process it occurs to me that there’s a small efficiency you could consider when trimming that pot heel cap. I'm thinking a jig saw inverted into a tabletop, like the router, to rough cut the inside. It would be faster than nibbling away and would reduce the chance of breakout. A fairly cheap DIY single process shop machine.

I agree with everything the above commentator said. We are watching a master at his craft and we are watching a piece of American craftsman history.
