    Some of these are beautiful But..didnt George Formby invent the Banjo uke so that he could play in music halls and be heard ? Preamplification...

      First banjo ukes were made around 1917. George Formby was born in 1904. He didn’t buy a uke till 1923.

    This was really interesting Aaron. One of the projects in my pile of projects is a partially assembled Formby Dallas E. It's missing some parts, and I think some of the parts that are with it are the result of other people's failed attempts to restore it. Quite the jigsaw puzzle. So this kind of video, where you look at different ways people have engineered it is interesting. Pretty much the same job, done several different ways. Who knows, it might help me figure out the Formby one if I stare at it long enough 😂 More like Jenga than a jigsaw.

    These oldies are so interesting and such gems. I have an Avalon branded banjo uke and formerly a very similar Bruno with its original case. I am not sure who the actual company was that produced them...both of them based on the Lyon and Healy model. Have enjoyed watching your recent musical forays in the UK! 👍

    Hello, how do you know your under the bridge plate? Is the pickup should be towards the end of the bridge plate? Thank you.

    • @ackeim
      @ackeim 14 днів тому

      I usually can feel the bridge plate with my fingertips. typically it is just glued to the inside of the top and easy to feel. not all ukes have a bridge plate though. As long as it's under the bridge you will be fine.

    Great to see your technique. I bend my ukulele sides with my home built iron. As I only make 2-4 per year that is not a problem. With my slow build rate the bent sides can be clamped in the assembly form for several weeks. They have a long time to relax in their new shape. Then the tailblock, front and neck ate glued on. Fine for a hobby, but not a business. At the Kanalea factory the bent sides went into the assembly form and the tailblock, and neck block were added within minutes. Fronts and backs the same day. Astonishing! Amazing manufacturing precision and velocity. Each scale of operation is pretty amazing in its own way…

    In fifty years of mounting good quality calf skin heads I’ve never oiled them. Much prefer the white unvarnished look. Do you always use goat? Do you use gut / nylon or steel strings on your instruments?

    • @beansproutmusicalinstruments

      I also use calfskin sometimes, especially on vintage instruments. I use both types of strings, depending on what the customer wants.
