  • Born out of the band Ceremonial Oath by Vocalist/Guitarist Oscar Dronjak (Hammerfall), Crystal Age was a savage Swedish melodic influenced death metal band. The band burned hot from 1993-1996, leaving a 3 song promo cassette, a Metallica cover (Damage Inc.) and their debut full-length album, Far Beyond Divine Horizons in their wake before splitting up. Technical proficiency was just as vital to the song writing of Crystal Age as was the melody which dominated the exploding Gothenburg scene during this creatively rich era. But was Oscar's affinity for complex song structures and 50 riffs per song mentality both the bands specialty AND curse? Is less truly more in this case, when so many other bands in his area were finding a commercially favorable balance between extremity and memorable song craft with bands such as In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Eucharist and the like? Join us as we dig deep into this complex creation and discover if it was this endlessly talented bands lack of exposure, or their approach to song building that has rendered them a largely overlooked band from a classic era of Swedish metal.

I hate that I couldn't make this but really enjoyed y'all doing this! First off...I love that Jim showed my favorite Maiden album! (I know...that's weird.) And I love that Marty showed some Cocteau Twins! That made me smile!
But I actually loved what Jim said about how there's a giant mess of riffs but there's something that holds it all together even if you can't nail down what it is.
I think, yes, this album is super challenging and that's sort of the point but I think pairing it with a challenging story just makes it that much more fun of a listen. I feel like 30 years ago these guys were doing the shit that Cryptopsy gets their dicks sucked for today. But with more interesting wacko ideas. Any way it goes I'm so stoked you guys talked about this and it was a hilarious good time to watch y'all pick it apart!

I can't help but wonder if the Liers in Wait and Crystal Age were an influence on the Nile?

Reminds me of early kataklysm and liers in wait.

A Riffstar is born! I love this record for its batshit musical excess. No restraint was used in the creation of this record. I guess they got it out of their systems at a young age and went the other direction.

People often forget that early Gothenburg death metal had a big Atheist influence. The first At the Gates album is a good example.

I gotta see this tonight. Talk about overrated mish-mash stuff. One thing is sure Dronjak (and the overrated applies to his other bands) ain't no Mike Davis (not even a Sean McNenney) from a compositional or technical stance. Amateur hour just like the amateur rip-off of the Seagrave cover. I won't berate this more because I love Metal independent of skill/proficiency (and this can entertain like the semi-cute but semi-ugly chic in class did for lack of a better Holesome fun) but these folks ain't no patch on the top cream of Euro prog or tech-Death... sorry... Next 😂
