    Maybe we should add this note every time we talk about biological sex on SciShow. Here's the thing, there are definite and dramatic physical differences between biological males and biological females. There are also psychological tendencies and cultural expectations, and those things are in the mind and in culture and so fundamentally come down to individual experience.
    Because of that, gender has recently started to be considered separately from biological sex. This seems perfectly legitimate to the entire editorial staff of SciShow, and we are happy to discuss biological sex in a way that recognizes the existence of transgender people.
    There are also a number of (probably not as rare as you think) intersex conditions in which people's biology does not fall into either of the two sexes.
    For these reasons we don't find it inconvenient or extraordinary to separate gender and biological sex. We understand that this will cause discussion, but we appreciate the discussion being thoughtful rather than ideological, if that is at all possible.
    - Hank

      tbird81 but he didn't, he said "people with ovaries" not "girls" he's not forcing someone who is biologically female to comply to their birth sex so he's not telling you who they should or shouldn't identify with
      It's just describing what it effects, peoples ovaries, which is what they are explaining in the comment above
      Also y'all need to chill, it's just phrasing

      Gender is, but not completely separate from sex, however for some people it is as with GID or gender dysphoria. The science is out there. Everything that involves life including the way you feel about your gender does have a biological basis whether your gender matches your sex or not. For instance, the levels of testosterone present in a developing fetus does have a good correlation for determining what it is you identify as when he/she becomes older (notice I don't use other pronouns). Though it is only my opinion, I do not think there is a whole gender spectrum of infinite genders. I keep it simple, just 3, agender is technically an absence of gender so absence = none = 0 so 3+0=3, but I don't know if it is real. Or maybe 2 as transgender people identify with male or female, so 2 genders?
      I would *love* it if SciShow did a video on this topic. Just as long as they do not start saying things like there is infinite genders or millions or something.
      :)

      JTelk woman can be born without ovaries, some men/woman are born with both ovaries and testicles, some are born with infertile ovaries. There's so many complications that can occur with one's physical sexual reproductive organs they just found it easier to say "people" not this more than 2 gender bullshit you're trying to bring up.

      SciShow
      It really doesn't matter enough to make a substitution like that. Just say 'women' not 'people with ovaries'. The former means the latter.
      We say 'mammals' instead if 'animals with some hair, endothermic body temperatures, and the ability to give live birth' even though there are some mammals that don't match all the criteria. So think of it that way.

      If they learn sign language at early childhood, yes, they do have it and it's based on the sign language they've learnt. If they aren't taught sign language, they might not develop an inner voice, which might seriously hamper their brain development. I believe there's a SciShow episode about it, if I'm not mistaken.

    • @xihearthe80sx
      @xihearthe80sx 7 років тому +50

      Chase Palmer yes they do, just not in the way that hearing people do. As hearing people rely on spoken language to become their inner voice because they rely on hearing, deaf people rely on sign language to become their inner voice, as they rely on sight. So essentially their inner voice is a visual of sign language.

      Actually, you only lose a tiny tiny bit of blood during your period, just enough to color it a bloody color. Most of it is the mucus lining of a female's uterus along with some tissue and other little things. It's kinda like how passing gas stinks horribly, but it's only because of a minuscule amount of sulfur. Only a minuscule amount of blood, but everything focuses on that

    Well, now that you've broached the subject of menopause, it would be great to follow up on what causes the side effects, such as hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, etc. Menopause is no walk in the park.

    • @maggiekelley259
      @maggiekelley259 2 роки тому +2

      Hot flashes, mood swings, and night sweats and hot flashes are all caused by a lack of sex hormones stimulating certain parts of the brain. For instance, hot flashes happen because your hypothalamus does not have enough fuel to work as well. With that, your body can do one of two things: The first, and the most common, is that your perception of hot and cold is altered, so your body, not receiving the right signals from the hypothalamus, starts sweating to compensate, which can then turn into a cold flush as your body swings the opposite direction. Secondly, and more rarely (something I got) is a permanent increase to base body temperature. For mood swings, it's because there are estrogen receptors in the area that help modulate your mood. Without the sex hormones, that mechanism doesn't work as well either.
      I've been in early menopause at 37, a neurology nerd for 20 years, a neuroendocrinology nerd for 5 years, biology for 32, and have been a menopause activist for almost four years.

      You ever hear of the aquatic ape theory? Afaik it's been debunked, but it's still fun to think about. Basically the idea goes that there was a line of primates that lived and hunted near the ocean, and we're one of their evolutionary offshoots. The idea was meant to explain why humans and cetaceans have so many traits in common, like menopause and a diving reflex, that other close primate relatives don't have. Hell, there was even a fake documentary put out several years ago (called Mermaids: The Body Found) citing the aquatic ape theory and saying another one of their evolutionary offshoots was literal mermaids.

  • @abcdefwoo1234

    Oh good grief. Why the heck is the title such a big deal? There isn't anything inherently wrong with the way it's worded.
    I really don't think this hullabaloo would be happening if a similar title was made for a video about another species.
    Ex. 1 "Why Do Cats Have Barbed Penises?"
    Would everyone really get upset just because the title didn't specify MALE cats? I think not. We all already should know that. It's implied by the topic being covered.
    Human is a normal way to refer to our species, and with that being said, menopause is a characteristic of our species even if not all members EXPERIENCE it.
    Men may not experience menopause, or any other of the explicitly female traits, but they do carry the genetics for these traits within their own DNA. That's why they can pass down reproductive traits from the women in their side of the family to their daughters.

    • @OlleLindestad
      @OlleLindestad 7 років тому +7

      This is an excellent point. The fact that people react to this title at all demonstrates that people tend to think of male as the default sex of a person. Sometimes in a really weird and obstinate way.
      The question "why do humans build houses?" makes complete sense and is utterly innocuous even to a person who's never built a house in their life, which is most people. Building houses is nonetheless characteristic of humans, as is menopause.

      The reason they made that distinction is because transgender people exist. Every human who has ovaries doesn't necessarily identify as female. However, animals don't have gender identities, all they have is biological sex. So a female animal and an animal who is able to give birth (at least when it comes to sexual reproduction in mammals) are the same thing.

    • @jessie8469
      @jessie8469 7 років тому +5

      For many videos now whenever scishow talked about females and males they used the term bio-sex female or bio-sex male. but I noticed they only really used those terms when talking exclusively about humans, which is not the case here. it's just a different distinction since the ovaries are what are actually needed biologically for female puberty and menopause to occur

    "Why do humans have menopause"
    Because there is some entity in this world that pities us and gives us 40-50 years of peaceful living

  • @LarsaXL
    @LarsaXL 7 років тому +17

    Im guessing it's both reasons. Longer lifespan is why menopause appeared, probably in many species. The grandmother thing is probably why it stuck around in a few species. In most species though evolution would select for females that had a longer fertility and could have babies later in life because they would produce more offspring over a longer time.
    Worth noting though is that it has stuck around in apex predators. Killer whales and humans are pretty much at the top of the food chain. Maybe when generations aren't directly competing for resources older, individuals will contribute more to the pack with their skill and experience than they cost to maintain.
    Look at humans, most people are well done having children when they reach 40, but they still contribute massively to society for decades after that. Humans especially where we not only raise our own children but benefit and educate the entire population.

    • @wierdalien1
      @wierdalien1 7 років тому +1

      but there are literally only three species that menopause and alot of whales are as long lived as the porpoises

    • @LarsaXL
      @LarsaXL 7 років тому +2

      That's why I think menopause is(or would be) selected against in most species.
      The older individuals that could not reproduce would be a burden on the species. Because they would compete for the same resources as the next generation, and probably would be better at it than their grandchildren at least initially. So the younger individuals in the pack would be less well of and would have a harder time to feed their own offspring when they were outcompeted by their elders. This would mean a smaller population growth as there simply were less food available for the babies.
      Evolutionary pressures would probably select against the menopausal animals since their packs would have fewer offsprings than packs were older individuals actually did continue to reproduce during their entire life cycle.
      However in species that hunts in packs the older menopausal individuals might actually be a net benefit for the pack as a whole. Yes they would still take a slice of the cake that could have gone to the next generation, but their skill and experience would mean an overall bigger cake.
      In a specie like this menopause might actually be selected for rather than against because that would mean that the experienced individuals would spend more time benefitting the whole pack rather than focusing on raising their own babies that would do less good since older parents often leads to more health problems in their offspring. Hence "the grandmother hypothesis".
      Also in a species were older moms would not mean more health problems for their children, menopause would not be selected for.

    • @wierdalien1
      @wierdalien1 7 років тому +1

      LarsaXL you dont see this behaviour in other dolphin species who are long lived and pack hunters. it would be interesting to see if wolves get menopause if you increases the length of life to 80 years or so

    • @LarsaXL
      @LarsaXL 7 років тому

      True, yes that would be interesting. It might not have appeared in some long lived species because just a longer lifespan is not enough, the lifespan needs to extend past the potentially fertile lifespan. For humans females have enough eggs in them and cycle for long enough to be fertile to around 50. If human lifespan were around 45 years menopause would not be a thing except for unusually long lived individuals. It makes sense that an animal would be fertile for at least the average lifespan of that species, plus an extra buffer. So while average human lifespan would be around 30 it still made sense to have enough eggs to potentially be fertile to 50. Dolphins and many other long lived species might simply not have extended their lifespan more than their fertile span, maybe both have increased. If menopause appear at the end of the lifespan it will probably not be selected fore since it only happens to individuals who are about to die anyway and so the "grandmother benefits" will not be very pronounced. But humans have extended their lifespan way past their fertile span. Many people live well into their 70:s that's around 20 years longer than their fertile span. And you can do a lot in 20 years. Raise a grandchild well into adulthood for one thing. Another very useful thing is to have old people staying at home, using a lifetime of experience to craft better arrows, better traps, better clothes and amass knowledge about medicinal plants that greatly benefits the young people being out there hunting and gathering. They could also teach and educate the young generation and take care of children. In really desperate situations they could also defend the tribe during a raid while the young women and children hid or ran.
      That's at least true for humans, people with a lot of spare time will use their curiosity and creativity to tinker and try to find out how things work, and to make them work better. They might nerd deeply into a subject and become an expert, experts are very useful, and they generally love to talk about the thing they love so they make good teachers, or at least spreads that knowledge around. Or make great art, tell stories and maybe even create religion or administration that helps the tribe to cooperate better.
      Raising children and gathering food takes a lot of time, and having people around who don't need to do either can be a huge benefit. So menopause became a thing in primitive humans. Because old people didn't just die when their reproductive days ended, they stuck around for a decade or so more and did other things.
      This at least is why i think menopause evolved among early humans, as far as killer whales are concerned there might be another reason. Or maybe the beginning of the same reason. Killer whales are not tool using, they don't build shelters, record history, but there might be other tasks in their packs that are best left to adult individuals who are not spending all their time raising children.
      Wow this was quite long, see spare time encourages people to think, speculate and further knowledge, or at least debate.

    • @wierdalien1

      LarsaXL but killer whales are highly intelligent even for porpises so it could just be social intelligence that is important

    Would it be possible to prevent menopause? Either through genetic engineering or some other treatment feasible in the long-term. As medical technology gets better and we are able to extend human lifespans further, the proportion of a (biosex) females life were she is able to easily have children is likely to decrease e.g. if people regularly live past 150, and you assume that 18-35 is the optimal time to have children, then thats just over 10%. I'm sure that would have societal and demographic ramifications.
    Additionally, post-menopausal people have some negative health outcomes, I think post notably in terms of bones, but I'm not a doctor...

      As a non-woman that will likely go through the menopause; it's just nice to feel included. Reproductive stuff makes me dysphoric as heck. So I was overjoyed watching this video.
      I don't want to erase women; I want to erase the gender binary that restricts everyone.
      Third wave feminism is hard.

    my kneejerk response is: maybe other animals would have a menopause but just don't live long enough to? I mean did we become menopausal as soon as we became human? If you treated a chimp well enough could it live long enough so you could find out? hmmm :s

    Mmm how about this idea: It's to prevent the Futurama situation: As in having sex between a grandparent and a grandchild (minus the paradox of you being your own grandparent)
    For longer lived and tightly social knit communities it might be more common to end up with inbreeding, which could create various genetic problems; probably more so if a parent/child mating occurs let alone a grandparent/grandchild mating.
    Animals of course don't innately know the problems with inbreeding, so evolution would probably end up favoring those mothers who naturally became sterile with age; they'd still be around to provide the benefits of experience, but be naturally be pushed out of the breeding cycle. This of course only applies to those animals who do end up inbreeding. Those who do not wouldn't have this problem and there wouldn't be much harm in being able to breed throughout the entire lifespan of the animal.
    Just a theory at any rate, and the evidence out there probably contradicts this assumption anyways!
