It's not just a box, it's a work of art! Nicely done, Charlie. I especially liked seeing how you overcame the issues that arose while you made it, especially painting the repair. Beautiful work.
Beautiful piece of wood, great job on the hinges and everything else. Is it a bandsaw box, a hybrid, or what? Doesn't matter - it's a beautiful piece of art. Very skillfully done. Great job!
I think this is absolutely beautiful. The thought and craftsmanship you put into this jewelry case just shows you don't need a workshop full of machinery to make something that will be treasured and loved. Congratulation - well done
Charlie....I think this box is exquisite and represents your finest work. Bravo. Since I have actually seen this piece , I can say that that it looks even better than the photos. This box demonstrates your mastery of high risk, technical fabrication riddles as well as your artistic grasp of fluid organic shapes. I would call it a Best In Show box! Well done, Charlie cheers, Mark Laub
Wow! love the effort put into this beautiful box. I know you used a bandsaw to cut the pieces but don't think it fits the what people come to think of as one. But that really doesn't matter because the results show it as a beautiful piece of art and she is a blessed lady to receive it.
Hybred Bandsaw box.... bandsaw box.... Ya'all can call it what you want... I call it a Beautiful Box. Great work and attention to detail, Charlie!! Everyone else can have that type of box discussion -- I'll just call a Beautiful Work of Art. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Your Hybrid thought is perfect. For your S shape letter, I would have cut it out of a solid piece of ash on the BS, then sanded to shape and then ebonize the wood with Carbacho bark tea, and vinegar with iron. Really a solid black and inexpensive to do. Then you could glue your maple veneer to it. Nice project and your commentary is excellent.
Thanks Morgan. In retrospect, I would definitely avoid laminating the divider. In fact, I am working on another box now and am cutting the divider from a solid block as you suggest. Glad you like the video!
No matter if one calls it a bandsaw box or a hybrid bandsaw box. it's definitely a beautiful box. The extra effort you had to put into it to flush mount the hinges was well worth the effort. I hope that your niece loves it.
Thanks David. Personally, the extra effort on the hinges was worth it, but I thought I would warn people that it's a really tedious process. And, yes she loved it!
Just call it one step above a bandsaw box, Your video is fantastic, one of the best prsented and edited, I do allot of woodwork video idea's, Have allot to learn from you, ps, I liked the washer trick. first time I have seen a video by you, will have to check out more, Thanks.
Thanks Tom. I don't think there is anything else that comes close to the value of the Golden Rasps. They are not fine enough for finish work, but they are awesome for rough work. I would recommend the fine grain Dragon Rasp as the best value for fine work. It's available at StewMac, or Amazon of course!
Beautiful work. Who cares what it is classified as it is in a class of its own. Thanks also for sharing the ups and downs during the build. Glad to see I am not the only one beset by murphy's law ;)
Thanks Steve! Not just Murphy, but procrastination, too. Truth be told, it was supposed to be for my niece's HS graduation. She graduated college in June, but I couldn't give it to her until October.
Thank you so much. A gorgeous work of art. i can,t pull up the description and i really want to know where to find such beautiful quilted maple . If you don't mind me asking where do you buy your wood? quilted maple is the most beautiful and my favorite wood.
Thanks! I've found quilted maple at a variety of different places. Cook Woods cookwoods.com is one, and I've found some nice wood on Ebay, too. The best stuff is often classified as "Instrument Grade", but not always. Try doing a Google search for quilted maple. Best of luck!
Artist at work...The finished piece is gorgeous! Love figured maple, but the yellowish tint brought amazing results! Thanx for showing the mistakes and how you came to solve the issues. A true artist knows how to correct mistakes well...
I call it an amazing, beautiful box.I agree with others its a work of art. Great skill. I watch all your videos. I can't wait until the next. Thanks for sharing.
This is incredible, Charlie!!! I am in awe of what you have done here. Absolutely stunning. Great video, too. I wouldn't think of this as a bandsaw box. For projects that I consider to be bandsaw boxes, I've never seen one that would be in the same league as this. Thanks for the great instruction and inspiration.
Charlie, that's a gorgeous piece of wood and you did it justice with this box. Looks fantastic. As to what type of box, I'd not call it a bandsaw box but what you call it does not matter - it really is beautiful
I have to say ,it's a great looking box. I don't think it should be considered a bandsaw box. I would say an elaborate box fits it good. Thumbs up, great job
Great job. I think its a box made with a bandsaw , but not a bandsaw box.> I have been a furniture maker for 54 years . I love the quilted maple. Probably my favorite wood . I live in Hawaii so I have to shop all over to get it. Where did you get that bilit from? I buy all I can get my hands on. I agree that Brusso make the best hinges availble. I only use Brusso on my Projects. Again great work. Id have to charge between $1500 to $2000 for that box consideringthe Quilted maple and the labor invested for this beautiful box.
Thanks Michael! I bought the maple on line. Hands down, some of the most beautiful wood, period! I think I got that particular piece from Cook Woods, but I also find it on Ebay.
I was very impressed at the craftsmanship that went into your creation. I don't feel that it qualifies as a bandsaw box due to the intricacies of the work. Regardless of what you call it, it is a magnificent creation. Congrats!

I saw that and it reminded me of a huge chunk of gold!
Thanks Lee! I actually bought the billet about 6 years ago. Truth be told, it was supposed to be for my niece's HS graduation. She graduated college in June, but I couldn't give it to her until October. I think I originally paid about $250 for the billet, but the price of that stuff has almost doubled since then.
Who cares what you call it. It is beautiful. Great work and very nice instruction. I was particularly impressed with the way you disappeared that crack. The only thing missing for me was a better description of the wood you used, and how to describe it if you want to buy some. But you did mention that it's maple, so that should be hint enough I guess. Thanks for this.
Hi Zale, thanks for the nice comments about the jewelry box. The wood is Big Leaf Maple, sometimes it's called Western Maple. The figure in this particular piece of wood is called "Quilted". So, quilted big leaf maple. It's amazing wood and not as difficult to work with as some other highly figured woods.
Beautiful box - i would call it a carved box. The figured maple was lovely. As you want through fitting the hinges i thought that ultimately the 45 degree angle you planed to stop the hinges binding would have stopped the lid opening at 90 degrees, so the stopped Brusso hinges were not strictly necessary. Charlie, "When is a box not a box?" When it's a piece of Art! Looks like all those hours of education with some masters rubbed off! LOL! The touching up of the mistake is what a pro does. You did that well my friend. I'm sure you're going to want to borrow this for the show in spring as I don't know how much real time this took. And you found your own answers in making this. The bandsaw is a flexible tool and you used it well. More than a hybrid my friend it is a piece of Art! Do you plan on making more? Nice to see you excited about making something.
Thanks for your kind words, Tom. In fact, I told her when I gave it to her that I would want to borrow it back in April for the show. And, yes, as a matter of fact I am working on another one right now!
I have no opinion about the "Hybrid",question, but I am delighted that you tell us the rate of speedup you use. It is helpful for a bandsaw newbie to have that information! Thank you!
You have really inspired me to complicate my box building. It is a work of art for certain. Do you keep track of build times? Thanks so much for the video. I would consider it a modified very complicated bandsaw box! Maybe we should call it a WOW bandsaw box.
Thanks for the very nice comment, Gary. I don't keep track of the time spent on my projects. I kind of wish that I did, but I'm not sure if I really want to know!
Great Project man! loved it. I think there is no strict rule on it. If the box was mainly made with a bandsaw or it was an essential tool in the making of the box... then yes I think it is a Bandsaw Box!
Amazing figure in the wood! Amazing piece of craftsmanship and a true artist knows how to hide mistakes! Great work and a well-done video! I'd say it's a hybrid bandsaw box btw...Love to get my hands on some of that maple, too!
Omg lol!!! I could here Benny hill playing as u tried all those diff ways for that "s" I swear It was comedy!! Awe but the result, not bandsaw my dear sir but a work of art.... now I can't get that music out my head!
God that came out so beautiful big leaf maple is one of my favorite words out there but I have yet to be able to work with it because it is so damn expensive
Wow! That is beautiful, Charlie! It’s fun to watch a master craftsman at work. I would say this is not a bandsaw box but I think “hybrid bandsaw box” works. Nice job, sir! 👍🏼
That wood grain is phenomenal! The design of the box is outstanding. As to what “kind” of box it is I have no idea. Quite frankly I don’t care what “kind” of box it is. It’s beautiful. Yes, it was cut with a bandsaw but bandsaw boxes tend to have drawers and your box doesn’t. You also glued in a laminated divider. Typically band saw boxes have a spot where the bandsaw is used to cut out the interior and the spot where the blade went through the side has to be glued somehow. You could have done that by cutting out the interior of your box with the bandsaw instead of using a router. By cutting out the interior that way coming in from both sides, perhaps somewhere around the hinges, you could have left the “s” shape in the middle.
This is what I would call a super high level of hand craftsmanship box. Amazing work and every niece should be blessed to have an uncle like you sir!
Thank you, so much!
I think it's a Beautiful box, period!👍
Thanks Tom!
@9:30, thank you for showing EVERYONE gets frustrated now and then in the shop (or in this case the kitchen), but learn and keep going!!
Thanks! I think it's good to show any problems that I encountered and hopefully, how I was able to resolve them.
You can call it what ever you wish. I will just call it Beautiful you sir are a artist .
Thanks!
My friend, your detail on that box is of outstanding quality ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Thanks so much, Leon!
I wouldn't trouble yourself with what type of box it is, just sit back and feel proud of what you've accomplished. Great job.
Thank you, Gary!
Hybrid I think and you are one hell of a good uncle ,and wood worker Thanks for the Vid !
Thank You!!
Beautiful work. You are a true craftsman, artist. Thank you for sharing your steps and techniques making this box.

@@JackbenchWoodworking Hello. Tell me what is the name of the tree that you used in your work, is it some kind of maple?
@Сергей Ра Yes, that is quilted maple. One of my favorites!

Nice box. All I could think was, Man I want that chunk of Maple for guitar building. :D

Yes, it was cut with a bandsaw but bandsaw boxes tend to have drawers and your box doesn’t. You also glued in a laminated divider. Good point about incorporating the "S" shape into the initial block of wood. I might try that on a future project.
