  • How I whiten yellowed plastic vintage toys with this Gel-Whitening process.
    Some white vintage plastic toys are just too big to dunk in a giant tank of hydrogen peroxide, so what do you do? Or, maybe you would like to try and keep the original decals on the surface you are trying to remove the yellow discoloring from. There are many reasons to use a gel-hydrogen peroxide plastic whitener, and I share with you my process and formula to do just that.
    Some of the supplies are specialized in this episode, so I have assembled them in my Amazon Toy Tinker Tim affiliate store (look under the "Materials" category), the link is below. As an affiliate, I get a percentage of the sale but you pay no extra costs on products.

    Well done. In my experience, the longer you leave it in the sun, the better. The sun really helps to get the yellowing out. I think if you did the Wampa again and left him in the sun longer, you'd be much happier with the results.

    Looks great! I live in Arizona so I get plenty of sun here for these types of restorations... :)

      @ToyTinkerTim how long did these results last? Did it re-yellow within months like some people think always happens, or was it all good?

    If you are familiar with Sally Beauty Supply, they sell a hydrogen peroxide gel premade which you can dilute more.

      That could help with a couple of steps, what is the strength of the peroxide?

    Do you think normal hydrogen paroxide gel would be OK to put on a 1980s cherry coke robot or would it mess up the red

      That sounds pretty heavy, I'm sure this would improve it's appearance. Thanks for watching 👍

    That worked great! Any advice for coloured plastics that have discoloured? Eg a blue plastic m&m dispenser that has yellowed - making it a greeny blue colour. Would this technique work or is it only for white plastics? Thank you in advance!

      It may fade the blue color, you could try a small spot and see. It didn't attack paint on figures, but I'm not sure of the results with colored plastic

    Great information, thanks! Just out of curiosity, would this work well on Lego? I’ve done the peroxide bath before, but then they yellowed again.

      Never tried it on Lego type of plastic blocks, All I could suggest is to try on a few different colored blocks to see if it can address the yellowing and not the molded in color. Thanks for watching!

    do you think you could use this method for packaged sealed pokemon hasbro items where the yellowed plastic is stilll glued to the cardboard? If the cardboard areas are properly masked and protected and the gel is applied im sure it would be ok

    • @ToyTinkerTim
      @ToyTinkerTim  6 місяців тому

      It sounds like it could work 👍 carefully applied, maybe better to go lightly and repeat to avoid leaks onto packaging

      This gel method is new for me, but a similar peroxide treatment I did 4 years ago has not shown any more yellowing. Beyond that time will tell. Thanks for watching👍

      Hopefully this may help, might be plasticizers that are leaching out and causing the discoloration. Thanks for checking out the video :)
