Too crazy in the stores on Black Friday. I stayed home and pieced a baby quilt for a shower gift. Used all fabric I already had. Wonderful day at home!
Nearly every day is a buy nothing day for me, I look around my house and think wow I have so much stuff, I certainly don’t need any more, no doubt I’ll be given more stuff for Christmas, so I hardly ever go shopping only for food 😊
I have always joked that 'shopping' will be the penitential task assigned me in purgatory...to willingly submit myself to the task on the busiest shopping day of the year would require a degree of fortitude I have never possessed. Today I evaluated my pantry stores, with an eye towards the upcoming holiday baking and am delighted to find myself well set. Then I took a nap. Very successful Black Friday by my way of thinking.
Love the charity shop where we live…it was really busy this week when peoples cheques came out. Lots of people are buying second hand in Canada. I wanted some reading material so was able to find two novels for four dollars….that is much better than ordering from a book store. I like to keep what I have read.
My dad grew up in South London during the war, and so he knew what poverty was. He always had the mindset of “is it a need or a want”. I have tried to fight that mindset over the years but the older I get, the more it haunts me. Sure, I have plenty of wants, but I really don’t have any needs. No shopping for me today. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, where we celebrate the fact that harvest is complete.
My parents were a young married couple during the 'great depression.' She always said, if something is on sale, but you don't need it, it's not a bargain. Our eight year old grand daughter decorated our artificial xmas tree for us this year. She loved doing it, and we loved sitting back in our chairs and watching her while we drank our coffee. Cheers, to frugal living...........................
Generally, I don't shop on Black Friday. I dislike being in stores with crowds. The one exception was a refrigerator when mine died on Thanksgiving morning years ago. But today is my husband's 75th birthday, so we are going out to his favorite seafood restaurant, moderately priced. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
If my family does do any shopping during Thanksgiving weekens, it is at locally owned small businesses. This year we visited a sweet little shop run by a local family that make most of the products. Several of us found a few Christmas gifts. The rest of the time we cooked, ate, played games, had a movie night at home, and made a Christmas craft with materials from my craft stash. It was a lovely time together.
Thanks for the video. American here, but never went to the Black Friday sales. I made turkey stock with our carcass from Thanksgiving, then made Turkey Rice soup. Made fresh bread in our bread maker ( I’m not an amazing baker like you Jane!), and otherwise had a relaxing day. Jeanne from snowy Michigan ❄️
I only buy things when I need them. Not interested in ‘buying more and saving more’ as an advertisement said! Crazy idea! Looking forward to your video. Have a great day tomorrow!
I think I'll buy a set of shelves from BJs. I wanted a set anyway and might as well save 1/3 of the price. I haven't really participated for 20 years or so, but one of my favorite memories is getting the Thanksgiving day ads and mapping out our Friday morning with my SIL. We were kind of poor and had three kids each, so the frenzy was worth it to us for the kids' Christmas. We split the stores with our lists and met up afterwards to sort out the purchases.
I took advantage of one sale today, but otherwise am finished with shopping (except grocery/ pharmacy) until after the holiday season. I don't like crowds, need nothing, and would rather save than spend right now. I recently found your channel and am finding your videos very helpful!
I'm like you. I also took advantage of one sale I had been waiting for - B complex! It was a very good one and, I'd been waiting for such a sale. I was able to buy enough for 18 months for 2 people. We don't like crowds either and want to save more rather than spend so black Friday is a day I would rather can my Thanksgiving leftovers, (18 pints of turkey broth and 6 qts of turkey soup!).
I definitely take advantage of Black Friday sales, I have a list of things I need to buy anyway, clothes, shoes, stuff for the house or for my pets and I wait for the sales. This year I bought some things at half price. It's still within what I budget for each year and for each category and I do not "go" shopping, I buy online, it takes me minutes since I know exactly what I need (I don't browse or shop around), I do it days before as Black Friday sales start early. I like your idea of decluttering and donating things, I did it yesterday and gave away 3 bags of things I no longer use to my local "buy nothing" group.
Black Friday has migrated down to New Zealand over the past couple of years, and is often a week or month long "sale"! I did take advantage of an extremely low price on a Kitchenaid mixer, bought for my daughter for her 30th birthday in January (it'll be a combined Xmas/birthday present). I've had a Kitchenaid for years, and they are true workhorses, and I hope it'll be a gift she'll use for decades. She's the pavlova maker in the family and won't have to borrow my machine now. I also bought some "Black Friday" priced items at the supermarket this week in my usual shop. So even though I haven't bought anything on Black Friday itself, I did shop the sales. I'd like to think they were considered purchases that I wanted to make anyway. That said, I think your point was very valid - I avoid "Boxing Day" and "New Year" sales altogether.
For me growing up very low middle class, it was the one day that mom would say yes more than no. Lots of fun childhood memories with her and cousins and aunts.
Hi Jane & Mike ever since I watched Shop Now on Netflix it totally changed everything for us here. How we are manipulated by corporations and what happens to all this merchandise we toss! Worth watching
I am using today to catch up. We have hosted 3 dinner parties for at least 25-35 people 3 times in the past month. We then had a couole holiday events and yesterday was Thanksgiving. Today I will go at a slow pace and catch up on housework, I will clean our room that becomes a catch all. And I will cross stitch and possibly start a quilt. I will NOT be cooking 😂
The only true Black Friday sales was at our Greek Lidl, where they had additional 30% off all fresh meats and fish on top of their normal 30% (near expiration date) or 50% (at expiration date). They also had some toiletries of their own brand at 1€ each. Guess what ? I stocked up only these items ! That was a bargain !
There is not a deal out there that would make me go out shopping on black Friday!! I stayed home and did some cooking and cleaning and felt grateful for my modest home and my additional day off.
We drove home (5 hours) from my daughter’s house. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Friday is Pumpkin Pie Friday for us! We eat pumpkin pie for breakfast. It started when my kids were little. My MIL made way too many pies so I would stash away one of the pumpkin pies and m6 kids and I would eat it for breakfast on Friday morning. Yesterday I got yo eat pumpkin pie with my husband, my son in law(who loves this tradition), my daughter, and the 4 grandkids (6 yr, 6 yr, 5 yr and 2 yr) plenty of whip cream and coffee for the adults. (Side note- my SIL and I both can’t have gluten, me milk so gluten free dairy free and they were delicious!)
I was intending not to buy anything but on my way to the vege market the wheel finally fell off my beloved "Frankentrolley" (so named because it has been patched up and fixed so many times over it's 14 year life) and this time it was beyond repair so I had to go out and buy a new one. One of our big chain stores was having a half price sale and I had a voucher for there that I got for my birthday so it was free to me and I will definitely get hopefully another 14 years use out of the new one. I worked out that Frankentrolley had been used nearly 600 times to haul my veges and groceries home and take my washing to the laundromat all at a cost of 3 cents per use so not bad!
I have boycotted Black Friday ever since I worked retail in the late 90s I worked in the men's department at Dillard's while I was in college. We had to move all the display tables away from the aisles and turn both escalators going up because people would mad dash run in the doors and upstairs to housewares. It was insane.
I participate on Black Fridays for pricing and for something I need. For instance, I lost weight and I needed and a new pair of jeans and donated my old jeans to the Goodwill. I saved my money so when Black Friday came along I went looking for Levi jeans and got them for 15.00 a pair and that is what I bought so now I can scratch jeans off my list.
Had lunch with a friend and visited a quilt museum on Black Friday. This was the only day that worked for us with our schedules. I much prefer to spend on experiences rather than things anyway.
This year I did rather the opposite and delayed some purchases until Black Friday to get some 10% discount on items I needed and were planned. No over spending but a different way of taking advantage of promotions. But yes you are wright it is very tempting to overspent but keep a list of the things you need and wait for opportunities to get them. Todays grocery shopping for the week I got some good sales at Lidle , so very pleased with myself. Have to save about a 1000€ to buy a new laptop . I'm planning the saving out this evening and been knitting like crazy the past week with wooll I still had in stock . Live can be nice a lot of times when you are gratefull for what you have and be frugal.
I gave up my Amazon Prime early last year, but I still get my vitamins, supplements, and herbs with "subscribe and save" once-a-month free delivery, and generally each item is 15% off.
i had 2 friends over and we ate left over turkey and after that took the dogs for a walk along the river. We had snow yesterday so it was really beautiful along the river and the dogs had a great time. Don't think I have ever shopped on black Friday
I completely forgot that it was Black Friday this year 😊. I don’t need anything but a few fresh veggies and I’ll get those early next week when the stores aren’t quite so busy. I rarely see the need to buy anything except groceries anymore; if anything, I have too much stuff around already.
I don’t think I’ve ever shopped on Black Friday and I am 73. I can’t stand the feeding frenzy😂. However , when our sons were little, I did shop the sales after Christmas. But only because January was the major birthday month in our little family .
My son’s birthday is in January and for many years he got amongst his birthday presents a couple of annuals bought in the post Christmas sales. He still loves getting books now. In the late 70’s we couldn’t get new toys as they hadn’t restocked after Christmas, if we hadn’t bought things before hand he didn’t have them. He had a few handmade presents, second hand ones and the reduced annuals.
Coughing my heart out here (not covid, I tested) so I stayed in and sorted out my cookie and cake decorating cupboard. I found lots of stuff in there so Christmas baking (when I’m feeling better) is sorted. No spend day for me 👍
Hi Jane and Mike. No spend here as well. Been home all day. Put the Christmas tree up and one or two other decorative bits. I later baked a chocolate cake loaf then settled down to watch a film. Your lounge looks lovely. 👌🤗
Just looked through my emails. My grocery store is having great one day sales with great extra point incentives, especially for deliveries. This will definitely work for me. Most Black Friday sales are a joke.
Spent yesterday with family and celebrated our Thanksgiving holiday. No no no shopping today. Will go through the house and take donations monday. My decorations are up for Christmas.
Hello Jane, we have not been participating in Black Friday for many years now. After our Thanksgiving meal we have so much left and honestly my home doesn't need anything. We appreciate what we have and are quite content with it. We do have some future travel plans that we are saving for but doing our part for the planet is also our priority.
Stores are the last place I want to be today, whether they are online or in person stores. Spent the day working on closing out the budget for the month and getting prepared for December's budget and meal plan. Caught up on a few odd jobs around the house and taking it easy.
Home today, avoiding the American Black Friday. Batch of Cowboy Candy and another of your recipe of chutney (yum). I made several varieties of jams and jelly for gifting and hubby made some lovely items in his work shop. Christmas cookie ingredients lined up in kitchen for my big binge baking. Fond memories of my childhood and my mom's cookie specialities.
I have finished my Christmas shopping and will only buy something on my watch and wait list. Just found some good deals on clothing items that needed replacing at the pre black Friday sales 😂. Soon they'll be having All Hallows Eve Sales!
I did do my normal shopping today, but mostly because it fitted in with everything else that needed doing, so I could have a simpler day tomorrow and get things done here. Normally, I wouldn't buy anything today, but had to do essentials this year.
I never get influenced by sales; most purchases are planned well in advance; according to my budget. I love Paypal in 4 .. which allows me to pay things off bit by bit. One needs to take care with marketing, sales, etc.
I do not want to be in a store today. Hubby went and picked up some groceries and I slept in and then took a nap. I've been very stressed out this past week and I didn't even make Thanksgiving dinner. I think it was the 2 hour drive to my sister in law's (who makes Thanksgiving) and the 2 hour ride home on very busy highways. Hubby came home with lots of leftovers and enjoyed another Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving dinner is not my "jam" but I do eat some of the foods but I don't want to eat more. I had the last piece of my leftover quiche. Hubby put a second coat of paint on the front door and he used my litle carpet cleaner to clean the couch.
I stay away from the shops at this time, far too busy and a lot of so called bargains are not real bargains at all. I have bought a new phone a few days ago though which I needed. The phone I wanted, not the latest version, and at an excellent price, so I’m happy with that. I wait for sales when replacing furniture and stuff, but I won’t buy anything I wouldn’t have bought at full price. It has to be good quality and will last a long time. Except if it’s something that has broken down and needs to be replaced urgently, like a fridge or a kettle, can’t wait for sales then.
Thank goodness for you Froogs. I just had the misfortune to require a kilner jar and popped in to B and M on a Saturday morning 😮. It was hell, full of people with trolley loads of plastic crap, loud music, forcing consumerism down your throat. It was all just too much. Just so glad I am not the only one who looks at this and feels overwhelmed and saddened
I only purchased 2 x pillows on 67% reduction. Paid $5 each. Otherwise I rarely buy anything new, as I believe buying second hand is rescuing some thing from land fill and has already been "consumed". Buying new is just consumerism.
The shopping frenzy that happened even 10 years ago doesn’t really exist anymore. Deals are out weeks before these days. Many people shop online. I needed a desk lamp that I bought from Amazon today. That’s it. On sale.
Small correction from a Canadian viewer; Buy Nothing Day was started in Vancouver, B.C., Canada "Nearly three decades ago a neat little idea called Buy Nothing Day was born in Vancouver, BC. Conceived by artist Ted Dave and popularized by your favourite bimonthly, (ed. to add: Adbusters magazine) the activist ritual sprang out of the realization that consumption had gotten out of hand - that addiction-forming advertising had polluted our mental environment to the point of breakdown. Endless, mindless dissipation had become endemic, and it was killing not only our wallets but our culture, our souls, our planet. Something had to be done to take back power from corporations, to send the message that the spending public had woken up. Hence the one-day challenge to “participate by not participating.”" A few years later it was moved to match up with American Black Friday.
Yh we do havd buy nothing day kn the uk. I only buy if im planning to buy, but we dont need anything, so stay away from the crowds. Hate shoppjng when it busy
It’s very cold here today with the wind chill so staying home. Black Friday is to busy/ crowded, our thanksgiving was late month so a quiet day of paper work and other sm jobs. Have a good day.
I haven't gone out for Black Friday shopping in years. I don't enjoy going out in crowds anyways. The day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas are self care days for me. I need the break!
What a great idea. A it the last week of th month it’s a no spend week for me anyway but any reason not to spend is a great idea. I needed to buy a couple of small clothing items this week but by using vouchers I managed to get what I needed and not spend a penny (still got a few pounds left on the vouchers I had collected.)
Love the idea but this year is am in Singapore 🇸🇬 with my daughter😊 My daughter is able to purchase new clothes and shoes for a fraction of the price in Australia 🇦🇺 But it is a wonderful idea 💡 Good one Jane 👍🇦🇺
I saw a Which report that 92% of black Friday sales were not actually good deals. I cant completely opt out as i need to buy presents knline for other countries. But i will only buy what i already planned to get.
I don’t go Black Friday shopping in person since I almost always work the holiday anyway. I treat the day like any other sale. If I need something I get it, if not I don’t.
In France it is easy to plan your purchases without waiting for a Black Friday because the sales dates are fixed by gender; example such month is the sale of household linen, another such month is the sale of household appliances, another date it will be the clothing sales, etc. Since always when I have to renew one of these things, I wait for the date of their balance. I noticed that this year, they impose us a lot of advertising, by phone, by internet, by mail, by posters for a month, with this concept of "Black Friday" from another culture . It must be difficult for the "non-frugal" to resist buying.
I never knew there was a "buy nothing day." When the "Black Friday Day" was invented, I never participated because we never had extra money to purchase anything, and, in later years, I just didn't want to get out in the cold and the snow.
Weather was good today, so cut the grass. Earbuds in listened to a free audiobook whilst I enjoyed the sunshine. Havent bought anything online or otherwise. Black Friday is just a marketing ploy. We dont need anything, so havent felt the need to trawl the internet for bargains. Any marketing emails that I have received relating to Black Friday have been deleted without being opened. We are eating out of the fridge and freezer for the next week, so no need to go shopping. All temptation successfully avoided.
Never liked black Friday shopping. The crowds can be wild. My husband and I went to the cemetery today and took away the autumn decorations and decorated his parents graves for Christmas. Really cold here in Ohio USA. ❤
Black Friday wasn't a thing in Australia until the last few years. This year I did spend because we moved and needed more storage which I got 60% off otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. But I normally don't bother with black Friday or Boxing day sales or shopping , I hate shopping.
I remember when black Friday first started. It was a bit of a novelty. My aunt and I, who are both definitely not morning people, set our alarms for the crack of dawn and headed out for the sales. Over the years things got a little crazy and people were actually killed in the crush. Since then I've embraced a more frugal mindset so I no longer participate in such events.
I was born in England and now live in Spain so Thanksgiving and Black Friday mean nothing to me. We put our Christmas decorations up and trim the tree on the 8th December (the same decorations every year) and take them down on the 12th day of Christmas.
As you said in the video, we are going for a walk, getting out our Christmas decorations (only one is new - a tea towel I received as a gift) and having leftovers - my aunt liked to call them reruns - for dinner. A fantastic day off that I will truly enjoy. For some more info, the company REI gives all of their employees nationwide the day off today to "opt outside" instead of shopping.
Too crazy in the stores on Black Friday. I stayed home and pieced a baby quilt for a shower gift. Used all fabric I already had. Wonderful day at home!

No spend day for me 👍
Due to ill health I have been in hospital 21 stays since June last year so shopping and sales are the last thing I’m thinking of.
The best day in U.S. to go to Post Office is on Black Friday, no lines. I mailed my small gifts to friends in California, I'm in Texas.
Good tip
Hi Jane and Mike. No spend here as well. Been home all day. Put the Christmas tree up and one or two other decorative bits. I later baked a chocolate cake loaf then settled down to watch a film. Your lounge looks lovely. 👌🤗
@@sheila1013 great, we will decorate tomorrow
@FrugalQueeninFrance Lovely! 😀
Put my tree up. ❤

Just looked through my emails. My grocery store is having great one day sales with great extra point incentives, especially for deliveries. This will definitely work for me. Most Black Friday sales are a joke.
Indeed they are
Spent yesterday with family and celebrated our Thanksgiving holiday. No no no shopping today. Will go through the house and take donations monday. My decorations are up for Christmas.
Love that!
Thanks 😊
"We appreciate what we have and are quite content with it." Words of wisdom that need to travel across the USA. 😊
Stores are the last place I want to be today, whether they are online or in person stores. Spent the day working on closing out the budget for the month and getting prepared for December's budget and meal plan. Caught up on a few odd jobs around the house and taking it easy.
Good
Canadian Thanksgiving is October event Jane. We doing Christmas things now. Glad some tidings to you and Mike, pets included❤

That's a great day
I have finished my Christmas shopping and will only buy something on my watch and wait list.
Thanks
On this Black Friday I went grocery shopping no crowded

I don't miss that
I did not buy anything other than my usual grocery shop to take advantage of the weekly sale. 😊
Love that!
I only purchased 2 x pillows on 67% reduction. Paid $5 each. Otherwise I rarely buy anything new, as I believe buying second hand is rescuing some thing from land fill and has already been "consumed". Buying new is just consumerism.
Thanks so much
The shopping frenzy that happened even 10 years ago doesn’t really exist anymore. Deals are out weeks before these days. Many people shop online. I needed a desk lamp that I bought from Amazon today. That’s it. On sale.
Thanks
You too
I haven't gone out for Black Friday shopping in years. I don't enjoy going out in crowds anyways. The day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas are self care days for me. I need the break!
Great 👍
What a great idea. A it the last week of th month it’s a no spend week for me anyway but any reason not to spend is a great idea. I needed to buy a couple of small clothing items this week but by using vouchers I managed to get what I needed and not spend a penny (still got a few pounds left on the vouchers I had collected.)
@patmartin9727 thanks Pat
Love the idea but this year is am in Singapore 🇸🇬 with my daughter😊
My daughter is able to purchase new clothes and shoes for a fraction of the price in Australia 🇦🇺
But it is a wonderful idea 💡
Good one Jane 👍🇦🇺
Thanks for your comment
Working in healthcare in the US Black Friday is a day I work. I never ask for the day off, I hate shopping and avoid crowds
Thanks
I made a phone call to a food bank. Our school is going to collect food items and donate to a food bank
Thank you
I made a small dinner on Thanksgiving-A roasted chicken, yams and string beans
I saw a Which report that 92% of black Friday sales were not actually good deals. I cant completely opt out as i need to buy presents knline for other countries. But i will only buy what i already planned to get.
Agreed!
92% ! Wow that's huge.
I don’t go Black Friday shopping in person since I almost always work the holiday anyway. I treat the day like any other sale. If I need something I get it, if not I don’t.
Thanks
In France it is easy to plan your purchases without waiting for a Black Friday because the sales dates are fixed by gender; example such month is the sale of household linen, another such month is the sale of household appliances, another date it will be the clothing sales, etc. Since always when I have to renew one of these things, I wait for the date of their balance. I noticed that this year, they impose us a lot of advertising, by phone, by internet, by mail, by posters for a month, with this concept of "Black Friday" from another culture . It must be difficult for the "non-frugal" to resist buying.
It must be
👍👍👍
I never knew there was a "buy nothing day." When the "Black Friday Day" was invented, I never participated because we never had extra money to purchase anything, and, in later years, I just didn't want to get out in the cold and the snow.
Thank you
Weather was good today, so cut the grass.
Agreed
Excellent.
I’m not buying anything today, just relaxing in front of the fire.
Never liked black Friday shopping. The crowds can be wild. My husband and I went to the cemetery today and took away the autumn decorations and decorated his parents graves for Christmas. Really cold here in Ohio USA. ❤
I agree with u they are going mad in aldi!
They do indeed
I have bought two things I needed spent £50 saved £30.
Thanks
❤
Thanksgiving in Canada is in Oct.
Black Friday wasn't a thing in Australia until the last few years. This year I did spend because we moved and needed more storage which I got 60% off otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. But I normally don't bother with black Friday or Boxing day sales or shopping , I hate shopping.
The only thing I plan on buying today is my car insurance 😂 it’s due on the weekend so might as well do it before work today
Thanks
Hear hear!!!
@@loriar1027 thank you
Putting the Christmas tree up is what we will be doing and using our usual Christmas decorations, not buying new ones.
Good afternoon everyone from a cold crisp West Yorkshire in the UK.
Hi Pat
😊💜
Just a normal work day for me and not feeling to urge to spend
Fabulous
I was born in England and now live in Spain so Thanksgiving and Black Friday mean nothing to me.
We put our Christmas decorations up and trim the tree on the 8th December (the same decorations every year) and take them down on the 12th day of Christmas.
Thanks, they have black Friday sales here too
As you said in the video, we are going for a walk, getting out our Christmas decorations (only one is new - a tea towel I received as a gift) and having leftovers - my aunt liked to call them reruns - for dinner. A fantastic day off that I will truly enjoy. For some more info, the company REI gives all of their employees nationwide the day off today to "opt outside" instead of shopping.
Wonderful!
I am not buying anything today. I'm doing a low-budget Christmas ..
@@mlu18 nor did I and so are we
Never buy anything that I don’t need desperately. But if I find a real bargain, I buy. But it’s budgeted for so no buy days are not for me.
Thanks for your feedback
Today I bought nothing.
‘Accord!
My people...but nothing day folks.
We are
Black friday is not for me xx

Well….I wanted to participate in Buy Nothing Day, but my hot water tank suddenly burst and I’m having to replace it.
First estimate was over $3k!
🤦♀️
Sorry to hear that 😞
This is the first Black Friday that I didn't buy anything.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Sounds like a wonderful idea!
It is!
