We drove the Sky Valley and Pinnacle Mtn Roads in the Du Pont State Forest and the Balsam Mtn Rd in the Great Smokey Mtn National Park this past weekend. Our trip on the Sky Valley and Pinnacle Mtn Roads was in the opposite direction as shown in this UA-cam video. The trip is absolutely fantastic! The Pinnacle Road definitely requires 4x4 with at least rear locking differentials and hill descent control in my opinion. There are quite a few short, really tough, off-road sections as options. I can see why the driver in this UA-cam video got stuck in one of the many mudholes. This UA-cam video makes the road look short and easy, it is not!. And Sky Valley Road has lots of trailheads to explore. I highly recommend the trip! Thank you for your video. It inspired me to go see for myself!
@@bdsbigzrx Not a one. I am not sure of DuPont State Forest's camping policy but there were no dispersed camping sites that I saw either on Sky Valley Road nor Pinnacle Mtn Road, just parking for the trailheads along Sky Valley Rd. However, Pinnacle Mtn Road looks to be just outside of the park along some portions of the road which makes you wonder what organization would patrol that road. I did see that there were places wide and flat enough to camp along the road but it would truly be a a gamble as to whose land you are squatting on. The Rock Creek Campground is very close to the park, rockcreekcampgroundnc.homestead.com/index.html.
Yeesh, the trail must have really deteriorated since i was last there in October. I went through it in 2wd with a open differential no problem. I do have 4wd but only needed it for the mud holes
@@davidhambright822 you said you went in September(4 months ago)? I went in october and a friend who'd been there before had said the forest service had fixed the road a few week before we came in late October so that was probably it.
I was near there not long before you made this video and eyed those roads on the map but didn't have the time to get there with my Outback. One day I'll get there, though, because my son lives in upstate South Carolina. One place you should check out is Horsepasture Road and Jumping Off Rock overlooking Lake Jocassee just south of the NC SC border. It's a gravel road off of US 178, not very challenging, but the view is great and at certain times of the year there are other, more challenging roads open there. Thanks for the ride!
Very cool. I have heard of that road, and its definitely going on my bucket list to get up there, especially when the side areas are open. Thanks for following the channel!
Hit me up when you go to horse pasture I’m a local near it and I know it very well, follow my Instagram and we could chat on there about it. @stonecoldt4r . Mountains to sea get in contact with me through that when you go!
I am just starting to explore overlanding and love your channel (recent subscriber). I’m based out of Greensboro and am building an overlanding Honda Element believe it or not. Are there campsites on Pinnacle Mountain or Sky Valley Roads? We are thinking of heading up to Dupont soon to camp and mountain bike. This is a great channel and resource for NC! Thanks!
I just found your channel..... I dig it!.. I have driven a lot of these roads.... I live in Louisville ky but maybe just maybe we might someday run into each other both filming out on the trail.... until then keep making videos!
Very cool... I was already subscribe to your channel. Cool content, keep doing what you do! And yeah, you never know when our paths will intersect and maybe there will be an impromptu collaboration :)
Really cool to google my back yard and find this! Went up there two days ago in my new 01 TJ. Next time you’re out this way hit me up I’ll show you some spots!
Definitely on our bucket list, but the point of this channel is to find other spots, so that people have more options to play with besides just Hurricane Creek and Uwharrie. But believe me, we have plans to get out to both of those.
We cross it in Honda civics all the time. By the way don't go in the mud holes, anything off the edge of the road is considered trespassing on either private or state park land and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
i have that same winch 12k version on my tundra. I like it. only had to use it one time. that road looks tame- have you done hurricane creek or charlies creek or tray mountain? all those are fun and more challenging!
It is pretty tame, but there are several side roads that are tougher, so you could challenge yourself if you wanted. We haven't been to those areas yet, but they are all on my list, and hopefully we will be able to do them someday.
Oh and there's another entrance that many dont know about hopefully they haven't paved it over yet it's over on the tuxedo/zarconia side off cabin creek
@@nikolaskeefer9385 yesssss just made my day I used to love going up there muddin and off roading I wonder if that big dip hole with a sharp rock in the middle is still there
Dude I'm in Mebane too! You drive the yellow XTerra still? I think I have seen it around, although I know another guy around here with a yellow XTerra as well...
Mountains to Sea Overland Mebane?!? Cool!yes. That is me! I have the tiger smile on mine. The other built one is a friend of mine. He does other over landing things, but not on youtube. He’s hit the Georgia traverse and others. Me, I am moving away from my Xterra and starting to outfit my 3rd Gen Tacoma.
Check out the rest of the videos on the channel for some ideas. I'm not sure what is open and what isn't right now, but there are lots of different areas to try.
Agreed that making your own trails in order to drive through mud pits is a bad idea! But the couple of spots where we drove through puddles they were clearly already part of the well defined trail. On our trips we do everything we can to leave no trace and we are often picking up trash in order to leave places nicer then we find them.
Mountains to Sea Overland have you got an email address. I’m making plans to talk to the forest service in regards to more access for camping and General use. I’d like to have some support for a possible volunteer base if you’re interested. Thanks

Just an FYI, I live here and drive that road weekly. Driving off the side of the road like you did in the mud is considered either trespassing on private land or on the state park of Dupont depending on where you do it. The mud hole you hit was on Dupont. They are strict on enforcing these laws. You just incriminated yourself. Don't advertise others to do it.
Hey man should see how it used to be before by the way don't know if it's still there but there's a hole I call the roney hole becareful it looks like pure mud hole but there is a edged rock that will break your axle

Where did you go? Started watching years ago then you disappeared
Anywhere to camp on that road?
Thank you

Wanna go mudding this summer in the holes at penucal

Jeep is 2WD only?
I wondered that also
It was hard to find, not a long or difficult road, but a beautiful place. It was not worth the time and effort to get to.
How come the Jeep wasn't in 4x4
it was. watch 4:27, you can see the front driver side tire throw mud/ water.
open differential life sucks
Leaving the trail hitting every mud pit on the side is how trails get closed.
