WHEEL OF TIME 2024: Brandon Sanderson on Amazon's DISASTER

  • Your man Salty compares recent BRANDON SANERSON public statements made at the 2024 C2E2 comic covnvention in Chicago, IL, to what he said BEFORE the WHEEL OF TIME show was released on AMAZON PRIIME VIDEO.
    I utilize the video I made the time (November 2021) and incorporate Sanderson's newest recent statements, what RAFE JUDKINS said in interviews before and after Season 1, as well as project what this all presumably means for future Hollywood or streaming adaptations of SANDERSON'S own works, such as the MiSTBORN or STORMLIGHT ARCHIVES series.

    Now Rafe Judkins and Amazon has me pining for the days of Billy Zane. :(

      In all seriousness, I think Prophet of the Dragon, Alex, Pips and al'Dan could do a better sock puppet adaptation of the main scenes and themes of The Eye of World than Judkins and Amazon did with an $80,000,000 season one budget. Oh and they spend even more on Season 2.

      I think that is a worthy fear, unfortunately. Amazon gets a hold on it, they'll give it the Wheel of Time or Warhammer 40K treatment.

      I think he should try Elantris first. Its a single book, its a story that might work, the magic is limited for most of it so the budget should not explode to much, and if it does work, he can move on to other Cosmere things. And it got scheming that might work nicely. A good one season thing? Mistborn feels like it would take a huge budget with the metaljumping right at the start, even if it propably got the most potential? Warbreaker feels difficult to make visible in a good way. Main thing though, the author needs to have a veto.
      How big can a kickstarter get really? ;)

    • @HeavyTopspin
      @HeavyTopspin 2 місяці тому +2

      Here's the one thing: unlike Jordan and Tolkien, Brandon is still alive and relatively young, and I think he's savvy enough to ensure he has veto power over the scripts to avoid a bunch of lefties taking a shit on his legacy.

      I feel like Brandon Sanderson is business savvy, successful, and determined enough to get his way for adaptations.
      He even mentioned in the past that he rejected offers because they did not give him enough control.
      Hopefully, he gets conditions like the netflix One Piece adaptation, where the author had the final say and had full control.

  • @Dovieandi_Se_Tovya_Sagain
    @Dovieandi_Se_Tovya_Sagain 2 місяці тому +11

    Brandon could only do this if they gave him complete control, which they will never do. A mistborn adaption would be great and a dream come true but unless Sanderson is at the head I'd rather then not do it at all otherwise we'll just get another adaptation that isnt an adaptation

      1000% my friend. Unless the studio money is 'silent investment' and the 'distribution' keeps out of it too, anything from Sanderson will end up Disney'd or Amazon'd into another girlboss, globaliist messaging, DEI hell failure both critically and commercially

      @@solarydays I would say you're wrong. How can you call it an outlier when they never honor the original IP. And the few times they did like LoTR and GOT they were loved by the masses. Look at the fantasy adaptations out there. They never honor the IP. Shanara, Sword of truth, Eargon, WoT, the Sandman even the Witcher. None of these do as well as GOT or Lotr because they aren't accurate and don't tell the story that's in the books. They didn't do the thing that sold them millions of copies of the books. And WoT isn't for everyone but the people who have read it all say it's better and wonder why they aren't telling that story. The people who are saying it's too long aren't readers anyway and don't read much to begin with.

      The worst thing is the people who break out "the books as written are unfilmable!" Fine, then animate it, where there's no excuse to not go beat-for-beat with the source material, and at the very most cut out things that have no real bearing on the story. The Japanese have been doing this for years.

    Rafe's justification for Perrin changes is nonsense. Most first-time readers immediate attach to Perrin before the other 2 boys. It's only later in the books when Jobert forgets Perrin is a character and Rand goes full emo that people realize the truth of the matter, that Mat is the best boi.

      I honestly have nothing against Sanderson. I think he's a prolific and decent Fantasy and Sci-Fi writer, although his writing style (prose) is not really my thing. My point going back to Season One of Wheel of Time remains the same- he is shrewdly picking his battles. What Amazon did is completely separate from the worlds and books he's created.
      Sanderson is learning the Hollywood game, to then play the Hollywood game- hopefully (for his fans) to walk out with a production deal that is heavily in his favor creative control-wise. But at the end of the day, it may still result in another 'The Hobbit' trilogy and not a near 'LotR' set of films.

Prose is simply writing in a way that people talk (story-telling) as opposed to using a rhyming metric (poetry). Do you mean you'd rather read 100k word stories as poems because that sounds incredibly tedious or do you just not like something but don't know how to express it properly without a meme to clip in?

    Well, to be fair, Perrin doesn't go on a fun adventure with his friends in the book. He goes because at least one Fade and a fist of Trollocs are after him and will nuke Emond's Field to get him. And he's constantly being chased and harassed to be killed or captured (including B'mon dreams). Occasionally he and the three ta'veren will have a fun moment where they can at least appreciate something, but not really. Perrin is running for his life, as the only way to protect his home and family, and is trying to find somewhere safe, or hopefully even trying to find a way to stop it. Perrin's potential killer rage issues would have been brought up organically in the series if they had followed the actual plot instead of what Rafe wanted to write instead of the plot.

      He's absolutely at fault. Right out of the gate he declared he wanted to put his own spin on it. When you're adapting someone else's works - you don't get to do that. You're supposed to commit to telling the original story. Second, he could have refused the job or quit if he was being pushed to make it something other than the story Jordan told. But see the first point. I don't think Judkins even read the entire series. In the few epsiodes I managed to get through, it felt like he read 1/2 of EotW and then maybe summaries of the others - if that. That he even allowed Egwene to be considered as the Dragon - shows he never even learned how the magic system worked. And then it got worse from there. So yes. Judkins hold FULL responsibility for the disaster of a show. It doesn't matter how many other people tried to alter things - he's the showrunner and has the right to say no. He took the job for a paycheck and clout. And it shows.

    Another example of a mediocre set of Hollywood staff thinking they can improve upon an original IP that has been well-loved for 30+ years.
    And, yes, I'll rag on the writers. Yes, they tried really hard, I'm sure. That doesn't mean that they're good at their job. It doesn't mean that they're good writers. It doesn't mean they know how to write realistic sounding dialogue. It doesn't mean they know how to give characters realistic motivations.
    And, honestly, I think a lot of the character decisions were made based on a fundamental lack of understanding of the characters in the books and a lack of interest in getting that understanding. I'm curious how many of the writers involved in this project had actually read the series in its entirety before joining the writing team.
