We should all recognize one thing: the question of being the "best" guitarist is an endless and fruitless rabbit-hole of an argument. In his early years Keith may not have had the virtuosity of Clapton/Beck/Page/Mick Taylor/Peter Green/etc. What he did have was an uncanny ability to take simple ideas from RnB and blues records, and somehow transform them into good straightforward songs, many of which have become so iconic over the decades to have the ultimate historical effect of defining whole tracts of rock 'n' roll. And Keith himself admits he was still learning the whole time. He was in that unique place and time to be creative, and be recorded while being among the first to come up with the ideas. Very few other artists can make a similar claim. And to this day Keith is very humble about it all.
Keith has kept his curiosity...the way he smiles when a guitar line works out so sweet that it surprises him, this tells me he is a natural. The open tunings, playing custom 5-strings, changing hardware etc, that’s a boy in love with guitars. In the Stones/Scorsese “Shine A Light” concert DVD at the very end of the bonus material he enjoys playing an acoustic 12-fret 000 while everyone else checks out the Clintons. He doesn’t care, this is Keith when he is at home.
I forgot to mention the still of Keith sitting on a VOX amp with a Gibson Firebird is in my hometown of Fresno California. That day they played at Ratcliffe Stadium May 22, 1965. The Byrds opened up for them that day and the mini concert was filmed by an amatuer camera person. The film has been included in many but many videos, documentaries etc...that concert was cut short by the fans charging the stage and the group leaving in a Brinks Money Armed steel truck!
excellent work, i do know of a few other guitars that Keith absolutely had at one point or another. you can find a video on youtube of a 1978 performance of Beast of Burden where Keith is playing a 50s Les Paul Special in TV yellow and I'm sure it's not Dice as it can be clearly seen having a single cutaway body as well as a neck pickup. another guitar I've never seen footage of him playing but can be seen in a 1970s era Les Paul ad is a mid 50s Les Paul Black Beauty with the staple pickup in the neck position (google "Keith Richards Black Beauty Les Paul," you'll absolutely find it). In June I was fortunate enough to have an audience with his late 50s Black Beauty as well as his Bigsby-equipped Burst at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, the custom paint job on the former was absolutely stunning. Unfortunately Micawber was replaced by a card that read "Currently Out on Tour with the Rolling Stones," though it is pretty funny to think about Keith walking into an art museum to grab his go-to guitar.
Keith was offered Albert King’s guitar in Detroit but refused to pay a heavy price for it ! So he never bought it ! It had been refretted several times & was in bad shape, if anyone can wear a guitar down it’s Albert King ! Seen him play his guitar acoustically in the dressing room at Ethels lounge & it sounded like horse hoofs clomping on the fret board- incredible!😎
Keith also owns a couple of Music Man Silhouette guitars I remember seeing him play live in the late 80's and into the mid 90's. Played them mostly with the X-Pensive Winos and with the Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheels tour. Saw him playing a black one live and has a matching white MMS and a sunburst model.
I don't why, but a lot of famous players all of sudden started playing Music Man guitars in the late 80's. Ron Wood used a MM as well, on the Urban Jungle/Steel Wheels tours.
The guitar used on "Satisfaction" was the Gibson Firebird VII as documented by Dave Hassinger, the Engineer on the session. Look on page #171 of the book "Rolling Stones Gear" by Andy Babiuk. The `52 Goldtop was bought in 1966 the afternoon of their concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Noticed that Keith always has to have hollow body electric guitars in his collection. I've been playing constantly since the 70's, and in the last few years, I've been blessed with the resources to live with lots of guitars to find out what I really want. My most beloved guitar when it comes to tone is my Gretsch 6120 with single coil pickups. Notice that Keith uses heavier gauge strings too, and while back when I was really starting to get good I thought I had to have .009's, now I string all my electric guitars with .010's or heavier.
Great stuff Ramon, I enjoyed that very much. I can add Gibson Marauder to the Keith list . I owned one for decades . When I got it in the 80's ,I found an old Gibson advert showing Keith & Ronnie Wood "playing theirs" . I never found real gig photos of the Stones using them however ! 😊

The famous black 1972 Telecaster Custom was bought new at the J. L. Caldwell Music Company in San Antonio, Texas. The salesperson was Gene Warner and he still has the the signed "keeper" store receipt and actual photos selling it to Richards.
Keith also played a pair of custom made Doby guitars in the early eighties, he is on the front of April '83 edition of Guitar Player magazine with one.
The black 355 is a factory bigsby & custom colour guitar from 1959. Ultra rare. It’s been in Keith’s possession for the better part of 30 years. But with over 3000 guitars in his collection, it’s one of many precious gems (it was great to see Keith and Ronnie using some very beautiful 59/60 Bursts on the Voodoo Lounge tour too)

I like the Sunburst Tele with the black pick guard Keith has been playing live for 45 years on every tour except the 89/90 run. he told me he needed to make room for those customs he played for that Steel Wheels tour, otherwise he would always have it around. See any video of the Stones playing Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" Keith always uses it for that song.
I heard Keith say that he has over 3000 guitars in storage? Can you imagine 3000 guitars? He did mention that he really only play a hand full and all the rest just sit in a wear house .guitars are like art work to me. Brilliantly interesting. Keef had the black '57 Les Paul Custom in Rome when i played in the support band in 1966. After the gig there were 2 guitar cases left backstage unguarded, so our drummer and i sat on them til their roadie came. I looked inside the one I sat on and it was the Black Custom LP. 12 years later Steve Marriot told me it had been stolen, not sure when, and after a Small Faces gig someone offered to sell him it ....he recognised it as Keith's, told the guy it was stolen and paid little for it. The next day he called Keith, and returned it as a gift. Hope I got the details correct, perhaps Keith could verify it. Rip Steve.
8:43 -- Re: the sonic blue Telecaster. I don't know when or how Keith acquired this guitar, but it was seen in the studio a lot particularly around '67-68. Keith plays it in the 2000 Lightyears promo clip and various Satanic Majesties session pics, while Brian plays it in the JJF clips. Based on this picture (and the one of Brian from the JJF promo shoot), it looks like it has a transition logo (so about '64-'68 vintage) but maple fingerboards were rare then (it could be a rare maple cap custom build). Around the time the Exile reissue came out, Keith made mention in interviews of a favoured '64 Tele that went missing during the Nellcôte heist, so he may very well be referring to this guitar, but I may be wrong.
There was also a 59 Burst with a stop tailpiece used on the 72 tour of America - and a tobacco Strat that was used on the sets opening song Brown Sugar on the same tour...
Yeah Keith and mick T used quite a few different bursts in that period but I'd say the most famous and recognisable is defiantly the 59 with the bigsby used between 69 and 71 by mick T and keith
The 1957 Les Paul Jr “Dice” was a guitar he got from New York punk rocker Neon Leon. The Neon Leon Band were the first band signed to the Rolling Stone’s record label. At a showcase for the band at Traxx in New York City Keith gave the guitar to his driver and told Leon to come by the offices and pick out any guitar of his that Leon wanted. Leon took a Gibson Explorer.
I know he has/had some Musicman Sillouhettes. I know because I’ve seen him play one in person at the Rose bowl once, and there’s many pictures of him with one. I also happen to have one myself, which of course increases one’s awareness.

It is always fun to refer to Keith's M- Telly as a 50s classic, with the humbucker neck pickup, the non body through bridge and 6 adjustable steel saddles.. Well, its a classic because Keith made it into one..
Dave you absolutely right about the sound of that album. I had a Ampeg V-4 a distortion knob so I needed no peddles. I used B-25 cabinet with 2-15” speakers and my 74 LP Custom Twentieth Aniversary which I still have.
He used the Epiphone Casino on most songs of The Rolling Stones Now which is in my opinion a collection of songs rather than an album. Great songs!! I think that one of the most refined sounds Richards achieved with a guitar is the superb intro of Down The Road Apiece. The magic of P90s!!
Check whether Keith purchased or sold through Hunts Guitar Shop St Leonards Road, Windsor. It was in their early days that The Stones were in Windsor a lot with Brian Jones and his then girlfriend Linda Lawrence, he had a child with Linda. Linda later went on to marry Donovan. Hunts Guitar shop often called Curley's had some of Brians guitars, esp a lime green Gretch at about £349 in 1964, I remember seeing in the window. The Stones went on to play at the famous Ricky Tick Club, Windsor from the 3 versions: The Star & Garter in Peascod Street, they had to stop there due to the weakness in the floor being above the Stables, it was here that Sugar Ray Robinson used to fight in the UK. The Star & Garter from memory was 15th Coaching Inn, my late father used to park his works van where the stables were. The Star & Garter was a great gig to play.... the next was down by the river for a short period at The Thames Hotel, now Browns Restaurant followed by the iconic no 3 at Thames Meadow in what was the Manor House known as The Old Etonian Country Club; here most of the major UK and USA Bands played when being seen by Promoters another great gig to play. John Mansfield was the founder of The Ricky Tick along with a friend. I knew John on and off from those early RTC days when John had a Piano Shop in what was Oxford Street, Windsor. Sadly John passed a couple of years ago after finally managing to write his book on The Ricky Tick Club. John used to pick up the Stones when they had no vehicle to get to the RTC Gigs and from John's words, the Stones played at RTC Clubs 39-41 times in 18months in their early days. He also told me the story of The Pink Goat that he gave to Brian Jones.... but that' another story... hope this helps. Michael

The '61 "SG Custom" is actually a Les Paul Custom. They changed the name to SG in '62 cause Les didn't like the new design and didn't want his name on it anymore.
Those ,61 Les Paul SG,s are rare and very valuable. Mary Ford played one could play lick for lick with Les . That guitar which her nephew I'm thinking he took it to Pawn stars where the dude paid 90,000$ for it so if you find an older les Paul in the attic that belonged to some of your ancestors you may have a small fortune on your hands lol.
Actually they changed the name because Les and Mary Ford were getting divorced and the divorce proceedings became nasty. Les bowed out of Gibson for a period of time then returned after the divorce.
I can remember a photos of Keith ,during a live concert,with a Gibson L5 S,with one brigde humbucker with metal cover.The guitar was in a Les Paul Custom finish style,in black.

I've also seen Keith play a Gibson custom shop black L5-S with a single pickup, but there are shots with Ronnie playing one as well. They may have shared it on tour.
The L5-S was a solid body top of the line guitar similar to the Les Paul but with a thinner more radically contoured arch top body, triple binding and abalone inlaid bubbling champagne glass on the headstock I believe. They were rare and hard to get at the time they were made, never saw one in any of the guitar shops in LA at the time in the 1970s?
When I think Keith I think of the Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitar! That plus his black beauty Les Paul and the short lived Flying V were my favorites of his.

Exhaustive. Would love to hear Keith comment on why he used certain guitars for specific tunings. Was his on stage use of a guitar due to it being the one he had during composition at home, or because he played that guitar on the album. Guitarists usually are so conservative: Strat, LP, Tele, SG, & maybe a Ric. Keith isn’t necessarily unusual in his experimentation, but most players are not nearly as gifted as he is.
Great video Ramon. I will look for more. I saw a post recently showing John 5 being handed the 1959 Les Paul Sunburst played by Keith and Mick Taylor and which appears on the Ya Yas cover. They said it had been in the Hard Rock Cafe Guitar Vault. Along with many other guitars including Brian Jones teardrop guitar. Was the Hard Rock Cafe crowd the private buyer of the 59 Burst. Have to say, sounded absolutely gorgeous as played by John 5. Thanks.
A very interesting story of KR giutars. I think his white telecaster is the most famous guitar. He has played the solo on "Sympathy…" using both Gibson and Stratocaster and I think the solo from 1991 (Japan) is the best guitar solo from him ever.
@@ianmacauley4996 Good observations there also. The imported ebony wood finger-board with genuine mother-of-pearl square block inlays on the neck did it for me. (Don't tell the government, Gibson might get raided again.)
The Keith burst was last seen in March 71 on the goodbye Britain tour. On none photo of Nellcote is the Keith burst seen. There is a fantastic book out, about all the instruments of the Stones, fantastic photos and stories.

Was just watching a show from the Main Offender tour (1993) and he played a Music Man Silhouette on a lot of the songs - including Gimme Shelter.

I like the Sunburst Tele with the black pick guard Keith has been playing live for 45 years on every tour except the 89/90 run. he told me he needed to make room for those customs he played for that Steel Wheels tour, otherwise he would always have it around. See any video of the Stones playing Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" Keith always uses it for that song.

I heard Keith say that he has over 3000 guitars in storage? Can you imagine 3000 guitars? He did mention that he really only play a hand full and all the rest just sit in a wear house .guitars are like art work to me. The older the better.. the ones that have been played and used in a way are like story tellers. Thank you for the great videos. God Bless

Keef had the black '57 Les Paul Custom in Rome when i played in the support band in 1966. After the gig there were 2 guitar cases left backstage unguarded, so our drummer and i sat on them til their roadie came. I looked inside the one I sat on and it was the Black Custom LP.
12 years later Steve Marriot told me it had been stolen, not sure when, and after a Small Faces gig someone offered to sell him it ....he recognised it as Keith's, told the guy it was stolen and paid little for it. The next day he called Keith, and returned it as a gift.
Hope I got the details correct, perhaps Keith could verify it.

8:43 -- Re: the sonic blue Telecaster. I don't know when or how Keith acquired this guitar, but it was seen in the studio a lot particularly around '67-68. Keith plays it in the 2000 Lightyears promo clip and various Satanic Majesties session pics, while Brian plays it in the JJF clips. Based on this picture (and the one of Brian from the JJF promo shoot), it looks like it has a transition logo (so about '64-'68 vintage) but maple fingerboards were rare then (it could be a rare maple cap custom build). Around the time the Exile reissue came out, Keith made mention in interviews of a favoured '64 Tele that went missing during the Nellcôte heist, so he may very well be referring to this guitar, but I may be wrong.

There was also a 59 Burst with a stop tailpiece used on the 72 tour of America - and a tobacco Strat that was used on the sets opening song Brown Sugar on the same tour...

Yeah Keith and mick T used quite a few different bursts in that period but I'd say the most famous and recognisable is defiantly the 59 with the bigsby used between 69 and 71 by mick T and keith

The 1957 Les Paul Jr “Dice” was a guitar he got from New York punk rocker Neon Leon. The Neon Leon Band were the first band signed to the Rolling Stone’s record label. At a showcase for the band at Traxx in New York City Keith gave the guitar to his driver and told Leon to come by the offices and pick out any guitar of his that Leon wanted. Leon took a Gibson Explorer.
My favorite guitar of Keith's is the black Gibson ES 355 mono with Bigsby.

Dave you absolutely right about the sound of that album. I had a Ampeg V-4 a distortion knob so I needed no peddles. I used B-25 cabinet with 2-15” speakers and my 74 LP Custom Twentieth Aniversary which I still have.
He used the Epiphone Casino on most songs of The Rolling Stones Now which is in my opinion a collection of songs rather than an album. Great songs!! I think that one of the most refined sounds Richards achieved with a guitar is the superb intro of Down The Road Apiece. The magic of P90s!!

Check whether Keith purchased or sold through Hunts Guitar Shop St Leonards Road, Windsor. It was in their early days that The Stones were in Windsor a lot with Brian Jones and his then girlfriend Linda Lawrence, he had a child with Linda. Linda later went on to marry Donovan. Hunts Guitar shop often called Curley's had some of Brians guitars, esp a lime green Gretch at about £349 in 1964, I remember seeing in the window. The Stones went on to play at the famous Ricky Tick Club, Windsor from the 3 versions: The Star & Garter in Peascod Street, they had to stop there due to the weakness in the floor being above the Stables, it was here that Sugar Ray Robinson used to fight in the UK. The Star & Garter from memory was 15th Coaching Inn, my late father used to park his works van where the stables were. The Star & Garter was a great gig to play.... the next was down by the river for a short period at The Thames Hotel, now Browns Restaurant followed by the iconic no 3 at Thames Meadow in what was the Manor House known as The Old Etonian Country Club; here most of the major UK and USA Bands played when being seen by Promoters another great gig to play. John Mansfield was the founder of The Ricky Tick along with a friend. I knew John on and off from those early RTC days when John had a Piano Shop in what was Oxford Street, Windsor. Sadly John passed a couple of years ago after finally managing to write his book on The Ricky Tick Club. John used to pick up the Stones when they had no vehicle to get to the RTC Gigs and from John's words, the Stones played at RTC Clubs 39-41 times in 18months in their early days. He also told me the story of The Pink Goat that he gave to Brian Jones.... but that' another story... hope this helps.

The '61 "SG Custom" is actually a Les Paul Custom. They changed the name to SG in '62 cause Les didn't like the new design and didn't want his name on it anymore.
Those ,61 Les Paul SG,s are rare and very valuable. Mary Ford played one could play lick for lick with Les . That guitar which her nephew I'm thinking he took it to Pawn stars where the dude paid 90,000$ for it so if you find an older les Paul in the attic that belonged to some of your ancestors you may have a small fortune on your hands lol.
Actually they changed the name because Les and Mary Ford were getting divorced and the divorce proceedings became nasty. Les bowed out of Gibson for a period of time then returned after the divorce.

I can remember a photos of Keith ,during a live concert,with a Gibson L5 S,with one brigde humbucker with metal cover.The guitar was in a Les Paul Custom finish style,in black.

I've also seen Keith play a Gibson custom shop black L5-S with a single pickup, but there are shots with Ronnie playing one as well. They may have shared it on tour.

The L5-S was a solid body top of the line guitar similar to the Les Paul but with a thinner more radically contoured arch top body, triple binding and abalone inlaid bubbling champagne glass on the headstock I believe. They were rare and hard to get at the time they were made, never saw one in any of the guitar shops in LA at the time in the 1970s?

When I think Keith I think of the Ampeg Dan Armstrong guitar! That plus his black beauty Les Paul and the short lived Flying V were my favorites of his.

Exhaustive. Would love to hear Keith comment on why he used certain guitars for specific tunings. Was his on stage use of a guitar due to it being the one he had during composition at home, or because he played that guitar on the album. Guitarists usually are so conservative: Strat, LP, Tele, SG, & maybe a Ric. Keith isn’t necessarily unusual in his experimentation, but most players are not nearly as gifted as he is.
Great video Ramon. I will look for more. I saw a post recently showing John 5 being handed the 1959 Les Paul Sunburst played by Keith and Mick Taylor and which appears on the Ya Yas cover. They said it had been in the Hard Rock Cafe Guitar Vault. Along with many other guitars including Brian Jones teardrop guitar. Was the Hard Rock Cafe crowd the private buyer of the 59 Burst. Have to say, sounded absolutely gorgeous as played by John 5. Thanks.

A very interesting story of KR giutars. I think his white telecaster is the most famous guitar. He has played the solo on "Sympathy…" using both Gibson and Stratocaster and I think the solo from 1991 (Japan) is the best guitar solo from him ever.
That was on a white Music Man Silhouette.

The Keith burst was last seen in March 71 on the goodbye Britain tour. On none photo of Nellcote is the Keith burst seen. There is a fantastic book out, about all the instruments of the Stones, fantastic photos and stories.
