Can you use cat litter as ballast?

I've heard a few people say they have used cat litter as ballast, so I wanted to know if it could be done or not... here comes some classic consumer research... of sorts.

I think my cats AND my son would look at me like I'm crazy if I started using cat litter on my builds, but it is certainly an interesting thought.

Good video. It hadn't occurred to me to try cat litter as ballast, but now I know not to try it. Also, I've heard that Chinchilla dust can be used for ballast but have not tried it. Not sure whether that would result in any cost savings.

I will be doing a sizable layout in the future, I`ve gone for calcium sand from charterhouse aquatics 5kg and 10kg bags are just over £6-12 a bag
