I've heard a few people say they have used cat litter as ballast, so I wanted to know if it could be done or not... here comes some classic consumer research... of sorts. And yes, I forgot to insert picture of Elfie!

Hallelujah brother Hallelujah. I have just tried to make a hill about 1 meter x 400 mm. I made a polystyrene form and used air dry clay. At the moment it's almost dry but it's full of bloody cracks. It seems clay shrinks , plaster expands. I guess it's take 2 now.
Amazon has 4 rolls 6” wide 15 feet long (60 feet total or 18 meters) for $15 (12 British pounds)
Hobby Lobby - same size roll as his $3.29 ( the ONLY reasonably priced item in the entire store😂)
An apples to oranges comparison. The Vollmer 47607 Single Track Engine Shed is an equaly detailed kit. Or alternatively the Wills engine shed would make for a better comparison.
I loved your video i learned how to do it
And I thought I was the only person to use a pipette like that, but I apply the layering spray via the pipette, and it works superbly for small areas, by opening the top of the layering spray and sucking it up, much better that the basing glue and more accurate than spraying.
Awesomeness!!! 💯
They guys at Burdock were so good to talk to and ran requests for locos and Ford Anglia…something to do with wizards 😉. The layout is superb.
Yes it was!
that plastic kit reminds me of one I chopped up to create a low relief warehouse. Mine was either Dapol or Airfix though
Nice...Love these videos especially when I have the same component kit as you, but still waiting on some more pieces. I guess the bowing was caused by the moisture and also the weight which was my initial fear. I would suggest some foam inserts at the ends and in the middle to redistribute the weight and reshape it. I intend to put a train on top so will need to do this I think. Arches can be red brick, London yellow brick or grey brick...it really does depend on what you are modelling. Originally I was going to paint mine (when I have assembled it) red brick but seeing yours not sure now...maybe grey. It depends on what your layout palette is going to be and whether it will fit in or conform....Mine is a London scene with London red buses, so still not sure. Will have to go back and look at some photos....Cant wait for your next video and thanks for posting:)
Thanks Steven, really appreciate the feedback and kind words. Already working on the next video :)
This is a great idea....love the idea of a street scene with just a diorama of the arches and a train track above. How is the finish of the bricks? Deep enough to paint brick red and add a white wash for the mortar before wiping away?
They should be deep enough for a mortar wash. I may do this with a panel line wash to maximise the capillary effect, but we will see in due course. Thanks for the comment :)
Brilliant, exactly what I wanted to know, I can buy grey ballast and change the colour to yellowish for the upper level on my layout. Many thanks.
Thanks John, great to know when something is useful. Over time I have found the pigments to be the better method, but of course the chalk is the cheaper.
Nice meeting you in Glasgow! Looking forward to more podcasts 🤞
Thank you! Appreciate the encouragement :)
The Arches Omnibus... lol 😅 Good to meet you briefly at Doncaster
👍
What happened to the end
The Knightwing kit looks quite continental European to me, rather than British. The laser-cut kit looks more British to me, although it's obviously a stone building, not brick. I remember that back in the 1970s, Airfix used to do a nice plastic brick-built engine shed kit (the right size for one tank engine). I think it was also possible to use multiple kits to make a larger shed, if I remember correctly. The competition in those days was various types of card kits, and the plastic kit had more scope for weathering etc (card warped as soon as any wash was added).
It's a locomotive not a train
If you weathered the plastic kit would you like it better? If the plastic kit is as it was out of the box and you compared the laser cut kit as it was out of the box... Would you still have the same opinion? Apples with Apples comparison so to speak... 😉 Happy Modelling 👍
Fair points... Think I just prefer the building of the laser cut stuff so maybe that's my bias ;)
What is the laser cut kit glue made of , if it is super glue I'm allergic. I use pva in a bottle with a Needle for presition amount of glue.
Not sure of the exact composition but it's definitely not super glue or any type of CA
Hi Adam, An interesting insight into pigments. You have a like and a new sub…and I’ve been shopping at your online store..! Best wishes from a very wet Wirral.
Thank you Darren and apologies for how long the reply has taken! Appreciate the order too.
I would suggest that when assembling things like this you use the top edge to make alignments not the bottom. The top is always seen, Any finger poking or viewing parallax alignment faults made when aligning to the bottom are magnified when they effect later additions at the top. The bottom alignment errors can be grassed or dirtied over, the top ones are there for all to see for ever. The same for the inner wall and coping, align the top edge.
So true, appreciate the pointer
This is designed as a stone not brick building. I don't think Jonathon would have designed the kit with bricks more than 4 times scale size. Doesn't detract from the techniques used and some parts of the North West and Scotland do have red sandstone.
Thank you for this guide. This will help many people with DCC fitting chips to retro models from the 1980's and 1990's.
I like non standard paint jobs 👌😎☕️ ps have you ever built the will’s engine shed that is really nice 👍🏻 😊
No, sadly Peco don't allow me to stock their items as I don't have a retail store so tend not to use their stuff to be honest :)
I do love laser kits, I`ve had many fairprice kits, plastic seems to have fallen behind as theres little 00 houses and i`ve gone faller or heljan or the older Hornby kits which are still made under gaugemaster, I seal the brick work with matt varnish after painting then if your doing a motar wash or i sometimes use tiling grout, it stops the pre painted surface be rubbed off.
And link your vids.
Too many adds and stop dithering when talking. Crisp and clean. Chop chop chop. Then watch your hits improve... Have fun... Be successful.
Thanks for the advice... got to do the ads though, got a mortgage to pay! :)
I think my cats AND my son would look at me like I'm crazy if I started using cat litter on my builds, but it is certainly an interesting thought.
That was an interesting chuckle to watch. Thanks for the research.
Thank you RAILstuff This was really clear and made the process simple. I appreciated your pacing and honest/practical directions. My son and I are working on his first landscaping project and I wanted to try out plaster cloth. Your tutorial made it easy. If we make a video with our project in the next couple of week, I'll be sure to tag your channel.
That's great to hear, thank you for the kind words, would love to hear how you got on!
Excellent information. Thank you!
Good video. It hadn't occurred to me to try cat litter as ballast, but now I know not to try it. Also, I've heard that Chinchilla dust can be used for ballast but have not tried it. Not sure whether that would result in any cost savings.
I will be doing a sizable layout in the future, I`ve gone for calcium sand from charterhouse aquatics 5kg and 10kg bags are just over £6-12 a bag
Great stuff buddy, loving the development of this little shed 👏 👍🏻
Thanks :) The shed hasn't developed much yet but happy to have finally got some work done on the diorama. Pt3 will come along a lot quicker I think!
😊
Racing stronger tommy tank social race when? 😀
Haha don't tempt me!
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you :)
The layering spray is watered down basing glue--please
I'm just passing on the information provided to me by the manufacturer and fact was I liked using it. Thanks for the comment though.
When are you going to do more podcasts?
Really soon actually :) Just working on booking guests
@@railstuffuk brilliant, great episodes so far 👌🏻
As Dib's Yard Shunting Layout said, cyanoacrylate otherwise known as superglue! That should have been the go to first choice.
I like this but i think it would be better with the colour swapped on the length of grass
In retrospect I 100% agree, I may add some more layers to blend it better now that I have upgraded to WWS grass
@@railstuffuk thanks . I'm a model railway nut and i enjoyed your video but my day job as a greenkeeper means i can't look at grass normally 😭
Congratulations!
A nice steep slope down to the track from the allotment? Covered in weeds!
Oooooo, hadn't thought about track being at a different level
@@railstuffuk yes, either track in a shallow cutting, or low embankment, maybe? Just to give some vertical interest?
If yours is the same as mine... Its 4mm Scale.
Super glue. Super glue. SUPER GLUE.
Only problem with super glue is that I have a track record for gluing myself to things!!!
@@railstuffuk likewise! Get a bottle of superglue debonder for those times.
@@dibsyardshuntinglayout Or acetone 😉
Ahhh, thank you for showing my little shed. I must try that ammo mig moss!
Subscribed today Adam. Just starting off and so tutorials welcomed :) I have bought a little road bridge from Hornby and used grey paint to bring out the mortar lines... Looks great but I'd welcome some pointers making it more weathered and little bit country lane style. I'm hoping to use it as a road over track bridge but I've just discovered Hornby built it for the other way around, if it doesn't work out have you got any suggestions for a road over rail, single line bridge that won't cost more than a tenner?
Shop around for this stuff. They come in different widths and lengths. Since it can be cut to size, it doesn't really matter how wide it is.
