I sure like what Matt Risinger has to say about housewrap

  • I have been wanting to have a conversation with Matt Risinger about some of the common questions I receive about our methods during the build of our insulated buildings. It was so awesome to snag him and pick his brain. He had no idea what I was actually going to ask him, and this is unedited, so enjoy. I'd love to have a discussion down below if there are any questions or comments. Remember, this is to hopefully learn and get better, not to judge or saw one person is wrong or not...so lets have a good discussion.
    If you don't know who Matt is and you are into building, and more importantly the science behind it...go over and subscribe to his channel. He does some awesome stuff and does his best to share.

      I have been watching both channels for a while. I am new to post frame and have a big workshop garage tiny house build coming up. I have designed it using stick framing and trusses but have wondering if post frame is the way to go. Been trying to figure out the pros and cons to each construction technique plus cost comparison. Will likely raise the issue with my engineer when I show him my design.

      Absolutely agree Pinnacle. I found both channels separately and love both the channels. I just saw this one, great conversation! I agree with Matts' building style and I watch RR for similar reasons. Most people can throw up a crappy, leaky, building, but really to make it the right way, its all about the details, every footing, corner, and window detail is like solid gold :) Shedding water, sealing air, controlling vapor, and then insulation... Keep up the good work.

      Same here. Wish Matt would do more actual building but his videos are also very informative. Being a San Antonio resident I'm hoping that I can run some plans by Matt and his team in Austin to see what kind of efficiency suggestions he would have for my next build, which I'm aiming for a net-zero home.

    I read the entire Ryan’s ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.

    I think I may have mentioned this once before, but seems appropriate here as well. One of the things my builder did on my steel clad building was sheet the roof with OSB before putting on the steel. He said he liked to do this (asked my permission first since it was an added cost) on all buildings with a steel ceiling as it pretty much eliminated any condensation from forming on the underside of the steel roof and dripping down on the insulation and steel ceiling. We both agreed that since I was having him put a vapor barrier on top of the ceiling (like Kyle does) below the blown insulation it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but I'm fine with the belt and suspenders approach to this when it comes to condensation.

    I fully agree with you both, why wrap something that's in a free space being vented by the soffit. I personally think that if it was wrapped there could be a chance that you'd be add a material that could in fact harbor the tendency to grab moisture from the vented air. We build our residential timber frames the same here in the UK Kyle keep up the great content love the builds 👍

    Great conversation! My only concern about building too tight is ventilation. Our 40x80' farm shop is as tight as cheesecloth and I'm not sure I'd change that without the addition of significant mechanical ventilation. Fumes from welding and cutting, volatile vapors, engine exhaust, etc are all present in these kinds of buildings. In my opinion, plenty of fresh air is an absolute requirement in any building where work or equipment storage is taking place. Letting that junk build up can be fairly hazardous. Tightening up partitions between garages and indoor conditioned spaces is something that Matt has discussed at length for that very reason. I would absolutely love a conditioned shop during the oppressive central California summers, but It'd take some very well thought out mechanicals to get right. I know you can always open doors while you're working, but you can't leave them open all the time. Just a little food for thought.

    Reasons why one of your buildings may need air exchange equipment is the fumes from running vehicles, VOCs in some products, or dust control.
    One of the great things you do is EASY air in and out of the attic under the roof.

  • @rickarda550
    @rickarda550 5 років тому +1

    I'm really interested in how you are able in your climate to ventilate out the condensation of the underside of the roof. Where I live we have to put up a tight "underroof" made of bitumen or foil to protect from the ice that will building up under the metall and then melting when it gets hotter outside. This is a big big issue in construction here (little jealous).
    Great with the variations of content!

    Folks should've been having this conversation a long, long time ago. Doing this for free on UA-cam is a public service. If RR is building a metal-sheathed pole building for an individual (or a company) to be used as a combination shop and garage (or as a complete private business complex) then the customer will have different expectations than a simpler barn or garage for vehicles/equipment. Figuring out the implications of what you want to use your building for, and designing it to suit those plans, shapes the whole project before the blueprints are even drawn. My family is talking about self-building a wood framed, metal-roofed large carport (no walls) and we have to figure out all the possibilities before we buy anything. That said, I think it would be interesting to see an RR project for a shop, or a business, or even a combination residence and business, where the entire complex (or most of it) is a sealed, conditioned space. It would really be interesting to see if a RR building could be a European "passive house design", as well.

    Kyle I agree with you. I never house wrap the gables. I want air flow in the attic. A building should breathe from the vapour barrier out. Kyle you are one a few contractors I don't have to bite my tongue with their process. Huge fan, but how far do you really need to take air tightness in the post frame industry? What you do right now with insulation, vapor barrier, and house wrap is great and adds value to your customers. The bug thing I notice that really prevents your buildings from being any tighter are the HUGE garage doors on each one. A tight post frame barn only goes so far IMHO. Keep making awesome videos!

  • @shawncockrell6007
    @shawncockrell6007 5 років тому

    My thought is that you do the walls because air can come in, with the roof you are using vented soffit on the overhang, but not the gable ends to encourage good airflow from those vents to the peak/ridge. If the gable end sheeting/metal is leaking some air like the walls, the reason for wrapping the walls, then that must be reducing the airflow from the vented soffit to the peak/ridge vent some by allowing air in the gable ends that are not wrapped.
    How much I do not know, is it even enough to matter, I don`t know....it has to be some, because if it was none then you would not do the walls, so it stands to reason it is reducing the draw from the vented soffit to peak/ridge vent by allowing "Some" air to enter the non wrapped gable ends.
    I have no idea what that house wrap costs, if it is soo minimal in cost that it is worth increasing the airflow from the vented soffit to the peak, which is critical, by any amount.....it could be worth it. I am a carpenter, but from a customers perspective it might be worth it from a feel good standpoint for them, by wrapping it, as I am sure some of the questions of why you are not wrapping it come from them.
    My analysis is that some air leaks thru the gable ends with no wrap behind it so wrap has to improve the vented soffit to ridge vent flow...…..is there already enough flow where improving it is not needed, I don't know......but flow from the vented soffit to ridge vent is critical, so it might be worth improving it by any amount.
    It is a interesting topic and more study is needed to determine if it already has more than enough flow from vented soffit to ridge vent or if there are conditions that humidity rises or slight condensation happens when certain weather conditions happen....it mat happen already, but then be minimal and dry out fast enough to not be a problem...….you could always do a video monitor in one and some data recording humidity sensors...LOL

      Never Sleight - I was kidding but anyone can say that about a house as well. A farmer in the Midwest might be in house a total of 8 hours for the day. Is really cost effective to build a passive house? Yes...because we want to control the air coming into the house. If this same farmer has a shop to fix his/her equipment and/or other people equipment he/she might be in that shed for 10hours. It’s always a benefit to select the air we choose to breathe.

If you check out a video he had about a month or 2 ago, he has a video on, Top worst building products. He's totally talking out of his ass! A lot of people commented on how wrong he is on one product in particular. He's too big ( headed) to read comments or to respond to anyone. Some of his insulation projects on his jobs are for people who have more money than they know what to do with, because they are so overkill that the owner will never benefit enough to cover the cost in insulation.

      So to your analagy,I think everyone not in the S.E. is a bit of a clown because they don't have my climate?
      Matt has went to the NE and and posted videos of building envelopes.
      Furthermore,he always uses states which climate he is building..and also what to use in cold climates.

      Matt has built across the country. I wouldn’t be too quick to judge. He knows what he’s talking about and doesn’t limit his knowledge to southern building.

      Clown-yes. He is not a building scientist. There is an actual career with the label Building Scientist. They are highly educated people. Usually they have multiple degrees such as engineering and chemistry. Matt is falsely claiming to be something he is not. He has been called out many times about this and still he fraudulently misuses the term.
      It's like me saying I'm an astrophysicist....now thats funny!

      He has never said he was a building scientist. Bet you can't post a link with him saying that.

      Why should I post a link for you. If I placed it on the end of your nose, you would still deny it. Go watch his videos and you will see him say it.
