  • Hello gardeners! Best gardens not only look beautiful, but also support a large diversity of creatures by providing shelter, habitat, and food sources. By changing just a couple of things in your garden you can help support populations of salamanders, tree frogs, toads, and more. Here are some of Bill's tips:
    - small pond liners provide great habitat for tadpoles, newts and baby salamanders
    - add aquatic plants in pots to help keep the water clean and provide shelter
    - use a pump to keep the water aerated
    - save broken clay pot scraps, dig a hole in a quiet location away from paths, fill with terracotta pieces and cover with leaves, this makes a great shelter for toads, frogs, salamanders and lizards
    - don't burn, shred of throw away your leaves, rake them under the bushes and trees instead as many amphibians and native pollinators (including the beautiful Luna moth!) overwinter in the leaf litter
    - irrigate your garden every 3-5 days during drought periods to help keep the ground moist
    - avoid using chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides as they are toxic to amphibians

The bigger Rana type frogs are limited in how far from water they can wonder and how high they can hunt. Tree frogs are pretty much unlimited. Most above ground insects can be eaten. Excellent bug control.

I keep kiddie pools for my water plants. The mosquito larvae in them encourages dragonflies and Damselflies to lay eggs in them. Their larvae eat mosquito larvae.

Tree frogs seem to prefer large leafed tropical plants that collect and funnel dew and keep them hydrated. Think cannas, elephant ears, gingers, banana plants especially.

oh geez! he has the bog thing completely backwards. A good bog filters pond water. so, you pump water into your bog and let it over flow into your pond. please research bog filters.

Hello! There are different ways of doing bogs, overflow ponds and rain gardens, it all depends on your objective.

Many tree frogs will NOT breed in any body of water that smells of fish! FISH FREE ONLY
