I could listen to Tom Quayle 24/7. That guy is so modest - in a good way. Thanks for this, Josh!

Time for Tom Quayle to put out an EP of his favorite standards. The Tom Quayle trio would be huge!

His anecdote about the Holdsworth gig is the same as when I saw Eric Johnson live. He seemed so frustrated with his tone or playing the whole time, but to the crowd it was amazing.

36:48 onwards is such a massively important lesson. Accept and embrace your strengths AND your weaknesses. There is no point trying to emulate something that you will most likely just be a pale imitation of. Use your strengths and your weaknesses to find what makes you unique and use that to find your own voice.

This was such a great conversation guys, it’s awesome to hear how you you both deal mentally with the struggle of finding/accepting your personal sound and accepting certain limitations in how you arrived at it. Thanks to you both for the honesty and transparency.

Great interview. I don't listen to Tom's style of music very much, but I appreciate his insight and attitude. You guys hit the nail on the head with this one.

Nice to hear guys at that level expressing the same frustrations and concerns that I do as a (more humble) player.

This is the best one yet. I'm the same age and I think a lot of us can relate to growing up with Guitar Player magazine which was killer, but also allowed a lot of us to get really good at sounding really good without having any idea what we were doing.

Love to hear you guys talking about embracing your own personal strengths, not beating yourself up over stuff you struggle to do which others make look easy. For me, speed with accuracy has always been something I've struggled with - I just dont have naturally very fast fingers, and i've come to be ok with that, as I have strengths in other departments.

That entire conversation was one of the most enlightening, informative and honest guitar/music discussions I have seen. Just such great insight and observations from you both. Fascinating to be reminded that even two such brilliant players like yourselves are still human - a reminder we all need to see and keep in mind.
Josh, if this music thing doesn't work out for you, you got a great future as an interviewer. :P XD You just GET it. You instinctively know to let your subject breathe and talk without getting in their way and yet you just know the right places to jump in and provide your own perspective, which all serve to take the discussion into really genuine, meaningful directions.
    AWESOME CONTENT....THANK YOU BOTH!
PS: As a devoted Ibanez guy for 3 decades+ I am delighted to hear such positive comments. Yes, the cynical will cry "of course they would say that!". But the truth those people forget is that people like Tom Quayle, Josh Smith, Satch, Vai, Gilbert, Timmons, Benson and so many other legendary players could pick and choose the guitar manufacturers of their choice. The haters forget that. And you see the length of time such players stay with the brand - not years, but DECADES. That pretty much speaks volumes on so many levels about the inner workings at Ibanez.

another great interview josh. you’re really onto something with these. went back and watched the sayce one the other day so i think i’m caught up! covid sucks ass but it paved the way for your channel and all the other killer stuff people have been making/posting as well as freeing up time for quayle and all the rest to be available to do these.
    Keep making the lemonade brother!

Great interview - the most open and insightful so far. Love the Solo app btw - I’ve been using it for warm-ups before I get into practising bebop lines since day 1 of its release. It’s perfect for me. Simple to use, keeps me focused, warms the brain, the ears as well as the fingers... Love it. Tom and the developers listen to feedback and were quick to add Oleo into the practice options, despite Tom’s fear of hearing someone call for rhythm changes :-D

25:15 “Option Paralysis” exactly the same, subscribed to Spotify, Access to all the sounds in the world, and cannot decide what to play, So search for new material, Hit play and within 5 seconds I’m on “Fans Also Like” no giving anything a chance. Back to the Vinyl and CD’s for me.

48 Minutes in and they have both played a bit. I appreciate it when the guitar takes the back seat to the discussion in interviews, and is only used for demonstrative purposes to supplement the discussion.

Tom Quayle is great. But if you watch enough of his demos you will see that he is very repetitive in what he does.

    • @valebliz
      @valebliz 2 роки тому

In his demos, yes. If you hear him actually play tunes, no. He breaks out of his usual finger patterns and improvise melodies.
