I pre wash all my fabric in just cold water and on delicate. It’s surprising that some “quality” quilting name brand cotton has lots of fraying, and other “lesser” quality fabrics have no fraying.
Where do you get your bamboo batting? I live in Central West Texas . I'm so glad you did this video. I bought a bunch of PW fabric at my store when the store remodeled. It went on sale so I have a bunch but have not used it yet ❤🤗 Thank you bunches❣️
I love that we are having this conversation! I bought fabric from a big box store and mixed it with other fabrics and made my first completed quilt 20+ years ago. It took about 8-10 years of use, but some of the purples are faded badly. I love the quilt still, but the fabric quality isn't what I expect now. I don't want fade. I'll also say that I absolutely do not judge people for buying non quilt shop fabrics. We all are where we are and we need to park the judgement, imo.
I have made lots of quilts and other things from Walmart, hobby lobby, Jo Ann, and quilt shop. I treat all quilts the same, wash/dry/use. Honestly the cheap and the expensive lasts or it doesn’t. I have a quilt that I used really expensive fabric from a quilt shop and it started shredding on the first wash. It’s 10 years old but you would think it’s 100. I made a quilt using Walmart 98 cent fat quarters and abuse it. That quilt has held up great.
One thing maybe people don't realize - quilting cotton is usually 60x60 thread count - whether or not you buy it from Walmart or your local quilt shop. I believe the difference is usually the finishes on the fabric - and not necessarily the actual cotton itself. The threads might be thicker or thinner. I had a brown fabric in a quilt I made begin to shred but it wasn't one of the less expensive fabrics. I have problems with people who try to make people who use "Walmart fabric" feel bad for not "caring about their work". If a person wants to have an heirloom quilt all they really need are two things - 1. a child who will save your quilt in a closet and 2. a quilt. All heirloom means is that they are kept and handed down from one generation to another. There is a lot of misinformation spread about fabric which is really too bad. Thanks so much for this video and not being afraid of the fabric police.
I have never found someone who talks about a quilt's durability this completely. Very helpful - just the right amount of detail. I try to pre-wash all my fabric to avoid any bleeding down the road, but I definitely will be including a few color catchers with every gift project, just in case. I loved seeing your mini schnauzers as "extras"...miss mine every day. 💔
I don't any children, but I do have 6 nieces and nephews. I gave each one of them a quilt I made as a wedding gift. (I'm waiting for the last niece to get engaged so I can get started on her quilt.) Plus each new baby gets a quilt too. All of those quilts were given with a box of Color Catchers and Quilt Laundering Instructions that I write out myself. Your Quilt Care download will come in so handy! I love your Walmart Fabric quilt! It's gorgeous! I always tell people to use the fabric they can afford and don't be ashamed at where it came from. If you love it, then use it!
Great video ❤I’ve made projects with Walmart fabrics. I like the David Textiles fabrics. I made a quilt 3 years ago for my nephew and still looks like it did when I first made it.I pre wash before sewing, color catch and steam iron.
I regularly purchase fabric from Walmart and have never had problems with it. Just recently made a lap quilt from the Pioneer Woman line that I purchased about a year ago. Its so pretty! Luckily I bought a few yards of different prints. They are no longer in stores. Your quilt is gorgeous!
I also made a pioneer woman quilt at the same time. It is also my favorite. I have washed mine a few times only using the color catchers the first wash. My fabrics are still vibrant. I'd definitely use pioneer women fabrics again.
I think some quilters are concerned about their quilts lasting long enough to be an antique. Most quilt shop fabrics have a higher thread count per square inch than less expensive fabrics, like Walmart. However, I think the pioneer woman fabrics are probably a better quality than some Walmart fabrics. I LOVE YOUR QUILT.
I used Walmart Harry Potter fabric fat quarters for my daughter's wedding quilt. Nearly 4 years later, numerous washings, a dog & cat, used continually - and it still looks great. ❤ your Pioneer Woman fabrics. My quilty friend has the same fabric, so I'll let her know about your video.
I've used Walmart fabric with great success. In fact over 20 years ago, I bought a kit with a pattern from a Walmart while we were traveling across the country. I made the quilt in the camper and have used it exclusively since then. A few threads are starting to get thin, but the fabric is fabulous, only a bit of fading over 20+ years! Thank you for sharing.
Learned to sew in late 2020 to make comfortable masks for family & coworkers... Used mostly Walmart fabrics at that time. I still mask up as some of my coworkers do... The fabrics have held up on repeated washing in hot water for years. I do hand wash & line dry, so mine don't look faded or frayed. Some of my co-workers mask do look faded no matter where I got the fabric from or line/collection.
I think there’s a lot of snobbery when it comes to quilting fabric. Not everyone can afford LQS quality fabric. Does that mean that if you can only afford Walmart fabric you shouldn’t quilt? (Absolutely not, use what you can afford is the traditional ethos of quilting.) I think the quilting definitely helps as does how you wash and dry it. I want quilts I make to wear out. Not quickly but I want them to be used and loved and if that means it wears out then so be it. My quilts aren’t quilt show or heirloom quality anyway! The majority of antique quilts that have survived are the ones that never saw the light of day, were stored in cedar chests or bottom drawers and have never been used to keep someone warm. I think that’s terribly sad. Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous I wish that fabric was available in the U.K. I’ll definitely be looking up that pattern
Yes, we should all use what we love. We also all have different shops and choices, I love the feel test no matter where I shop. Just enjoy the process of quilting and using the things you make.
I bought Pioneer fabric at Walmart but also had to add a little bit more from my stash. I also used your free pattern. I quilted it myself on my domestic machine and hand quilted around the white squares. I love it. It looks great in my living room on the couch.
@@katherinephillips8952Thank you. I didn't know it was a thing. I made a few quilts over the years and hand tied them. I didn't really become a quilter until last June. I learned everything on UA-cam. I am now obsessed. I have machine and hand quilted on 3 quilts. I love the look.
I always buy Walmart quilting fabrics when I am in the US and have no regrets whatsoever. Some are better quality than others, you just have to choose carefully but then again I choose carefully when in quilt shops as well.
I have a quilt my mother made and it is over thirty years old. I am sure it is not made with quilt shop fabric. She got fabrics from JC Penney or A W Lucas company. They will not last forever no matter what fabric you use.
I recently watched your videos about the Pioneer Woman fabric. Our Walmart had it on clearance so I bought a lot of it. I just finished this quilt top this week and I am so happy about it. I love the colors. I may try the bamboo batting. I never heard of it before. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me that my videos have been helpful to you. 🥰 I hope your quilt brings you as much joy as my quilt has brought my family
Our Walmart cleared out their PW fabric a couple of months ago and I got it insanely cheap! $1 @ for fat quarter bundles, and yardage for $1 a yard. I am having a lot of fun with it!😂
I am not a fabric snob. I buy Walmart fabric, and I have had no issues. I get the I mostly buy from Hancock's of Paducah...but deep discount. I feel no compunction to support my local quilt shop. Rather, I support my local wallet. Now, my Stepmom brought me some fabric from Aldi's...that I am snobby about and had to ask her not to buy any more. Thread count was noticeably austere! I frequently buy the Waverly Inspirations solids but manufacturer is Shason Textile. The fabric comes in great colorways. Three yard package is just a sneeze under $3/yd. I enjoy working with it, and I don't notice any difference from Kona Cotton.
Love this quilt! Loved it when you made it and it is still beautiful. I used the bamboo batting for a quilt I made for my husband. It is so soft and drapes great. I had it quilted as it is very large, and used the left over batting for a small quilt for my youngest grandson. Holy cannoli! The batting got EVERYWHERE! I quilted it myself since it was small and sneezed every time I touched it. So, the bamboo batting is really nice, but I found it hard to work with. I will only use it if the quilt is going to a long arm. Thanks for all your videos. Lots of great advice.
I think your original video on this was the first one of yours I watched! I have to admit to being a Pioneer Woman fan, and that brand of fabrics seems to be pretty good quality. Walmart fabrics just vary depending on where they get them, some are awful quality, some are close to what you'd get in a quilt shop. You just have to learn to feel and tell the difference. Interesting video!
I would appreciate more information regarding the different batting types. I have been using cotton batting since I am still new to quilting and my projects have been for the kitchen or dining room table. Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding this fabric line. I think your quilt is beautiful!
Batting will be a personal preference thing. I use Warm and Natural because I love the drape. I have used a higher loft poly batting for baby quilts. It looks cute, and it's poofy. The quilting stands out more than a flat cotton batting. Welcome to the quilting world!
I would so love a video on battings! Just found your channel this week & I'm learning so much! I'm going to try the jelly roll "around the world" quilt for my first one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Christen, you must be reading my mind! I was just check out batting. I’m looking for something light. I would like to do a light quilting for some placemats. What I have feels too thick. Or maybe suggest what I can use to sandwich them. Thanks, you’re great.
Is love a video about batting! I'm learning and going to be attempting a large quilt for one of my best friends. He has left the batting choice up to me though his first choice was down filling and I said no. 😅 What would you recommend for a lighter quilt that would be good for year round? Bamboo? So it can be layered with his other, heavier, blankets during the fall and winter but used alone during the summer?
Too many fabric snobs...it's a beautiful quilt and will continue to be a beautiful quilt!! I would love a video all about batting...would love to know which one gives max crinkle!
❤I loved the update on your pioneer woman, Walmart fabric quilt! It does look really good after a whole year of using and washing. Thankyou so much for the update.😊
Hey Christen! Great video. I bought some Pioneer Woman material but haven't decided what to do yet. It is yardage not fat quarters. I will think of something 😀😍🤩
I absolutely LOVE the Quilters Dream Green batting that is made from recycled plastic bottles. It is much like quilting with 100% polyester batting, which I use for baby quilts and children's quilts. I am in Texas too, and I have always wanted to try bamboo batting, because I have heard what a dream it is to use, and what a wonderful drape and softness it has. But I have also heard that it is very expensive. Are you able to purchase it in big rolls?
I have purchased it in big rolls from amazon before. I think it was a 90" roll. You can order it from the bigger stores websites, but shipping is the real cost issue. Bamboo is more expensive than cotton or polly, but ... when you have a desired outcome and an already expensive quilt, it makes sense in some cases to spend the extra $$! I haven't tried the recycled batting. I'll have to look into that! Thanks for the recommendation.
I use Walmart and JoAnn Fabrics and have had no problems. Do you have a suggestion for good, but not expensive, batting? I’ve been using “Warm” cotton batting, but it’s getting expensive, and most of my quilts are made for charity.
If you're making a lot for charity, I would buying a whole roll of batting instead of the individual packages. You can even go in with a friend and split the cost if it helps. Thats the way I started to save money on batting! Most of the coupons on the big box stores do not apply to batting and even then shipping is costly. I found Amazon to have the better deal overall and shipping was free. You can also sew all of your batting scraps together to make bigger pieces. - No one will ever know 😉
Thanks for doing this video. I got the Parker’s and purchased the fabric. I love the fabric you used for the backing! Do you remember what fabric that is? Thank you!
I would absolutely LOVE a tutorial on batting. I've used cotton, wool, and polyester but have just now heard of bamboo. I'm going to be working soon on a quilt for a friend using her daughters saved baby clothes and clothes that she has grown up with over the years. The plan is to have her take it to college. So anything you can tell me about how well bamboo would stand up to college life. My kids all had fiberfill batting. My grand children ( all 6 of them) have had their baby quilts, Christmas quilts and halloween quilts all have either cotton batting or fiberfill. Bamboo sounds like it might work well. Thanks
Very nice fabric, and based on the screen shot you showed, quite affordable! I'm going to try bamboo batting, which I've never used. I live in Nevada and it gets pretty hot, so at our house we just don't need really warm quilts, which is why I stay away from Cuddle or flannel.
I've used fabric from Walmart although not a lot. I've been thinking about getting some of Ree's fabric. I love the colors and I can't imagine her putting her name on something that wasn't quality. The quilt you made is beautiful but I'm not really doing big quilts anymore. It's mostly placemats, table runners etc. Great video.
Hello hello… I enjoy watching your videos, thx for sharing with us! Question, have you made a quilt with any of the other Walmart fabrics. I can see the pioneer woman fabric being a better quality but when I touch and squeeze some of the other Walmart fabrics they hard and and not soft. Can we get a video of you making a quilt with the regular Walmart fabrics?
Thats a great idea! My walmart does not carry fabric, so it is hard for me to go in and touch and feel the fabrics, but I'll see what I can do because I think that is a really great point about her name being on the product and her personal standard of quality! 🙌🏼
You’re right about giving quilt washing instructions as many don’t know how to care for quilts. Tried to download your quiltcare instructions several hours ago but still haven’t received-can always learn about more suggestions! Is there another way to receive your instructions? Thanks!
Thank you for the advice about the bamboo batting! I want to make a quilt for my son and daughter-in-law but they get hot easily. I have a feeling the bamboo batting will do the trick! Is there a specific brand that you recommend?
Thank you for doing this. I don’t always buy Walmart fabric, but I do buy some. Pioneer Woman fabric is a favorite and W think it rivals some of the other best brands ❤
Oooh I'm so glad I watched this. I've been hunting for a good pattern to make my dad a quilt, and I think the one you linked to would be perfect. Your quilt turned out gorgeous.
Definitely please do a video o the different battings and how to determine the best way to make a decision on which to use for our individual projects. Thank you Kristen!!!
I have bamboo sheets and absolutely hate them, I find them always wrinkled and way too warm…but….I have a bamboo T-Shirt and love it! I even love to sleep in it.
I have noticed a few comments mentioning how they love waverly and pioneer but some are not good quality. Can you do a video demonstrating how to tell if a fabric is worth the buy? I dont have anyone to shop with me and teach me oh you see this?! Dont get that 😂. Yes to ypur batting video as well!!😊
Was this quilt done on a long arm or domestic machine? Still looks fabulous and I will buy bamboo for my husband's quilt project because he is hot all the time lol

Right? Time to put the topic of fabric quality to rest. Use what you can afford. Quilting is an expensive hobby
Thank you for sharing this. I love that you have those old quilts that are full of memories. 🥰

Walmart fabric for the win! Sometimes the best finds are in unexpected places. Keep creating all of your wonderful ideas! 🥰

YES, there should be no judgement. Quilting is a passion that we love, we don't want it to become something we dislike because of comparison.

@@strut526 thank you!
I hope to put one together soon, I have a lot to say on it. 😁🤩
@ISeeStarsQuilting thank you very much!
Thanks so much for sharing this information. I LOVE your quilt, it’s beautiful ❤️
So happy you liked the quilt and the info! Thanks for the support! 🥰🥰
Oh my goodness bamboo batting?
It is pretty great.
I did an exploding heart quilt using pioneer woman fabric. . I starched my fabric first. It turned out great.
oh I bet that turned out absolutely beautiful! I adore that pattern ✨💓
...where can we find that pattern? Sounds cool!
I've tried to find the link for this quilt pattern, but I've not been successful. Help, please.
You can find it here at this link - itsonlyfabricandthread.com/2021/10/14/spring-picnic-quilt-block-tutorial-and-free-quilt-pattern/?v=400b9db48e62
Oh thank you so much for doing this video!!😊 I am going to get out my fabric now. Thank you.
Time to unleash your creativity with that fabric! Let the magic begin! 🙌🏼✨
I would so love a video on battings! Just found your channel this week & I'm learning so much! I'm going to try the jelly roll "around the world" quilt for my first one. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for the kind words and for being part of our quilting community!
Christen, you must be reading my mind! I was just check out batting. I’m looking for something light. I would like to do a light quilting for some placemats. What I have feels too thick. Or maybe suggest what I can use to sandwich them. Thanks, you’re great.
Thank you for watching. I have a lot to say on batting, and hope to get out a video soon.
That sounds like a fun project! Bamboo batting could be a great choice for a lighter quilt that can be used year-round.
Too many fabric snobs...it's a beautiful quilt and will continue to be a beautiful quilt!!
I would love a video all about batting...would love to know which one gives max crinkle!
I hope to work on that soon....stay tuned.
@@ISeeStarsQuilting can't wait!
You do not look old enough to have 2 teenagers! I'm sure you get that a lot.
Awe, that is so sweet.
I would love m9re info on batting
I love that quilt pioneer woman fabrics are gorgeous and vibrant. Thanks for the follow-up
You are so welcome.
wow $44!!!! ???? Incredible
My walmart clearanced the pioneer woman fabric.did note the turquise in her quilt looks faded now.
Yes I would like to know more about when to use different kinds of batting. Thank you, love watching your videos, you are very pleasant. ❤
Thank you so much. That is so sweet.
I can’t find your quilt care download, please help 🙏🏻
❤I loved the update on your pioneer woman, Walmart fabric quilt! It does look really good after a whole year of using and washing. Thankyou so much for the update.😊
Thank you for watching. I love this quilt.
Your pioneer woman quilt is very pretty. I have some of her fabrics.
Thank you so much.
Yes, please! I’d love to hear your thoughts on choosing batting
There is nothing like cuddling up into a quilt. It is a safe place.
A batting video would be really helpful!
I can’t find a link to Quilt Care 101. Help, please.
The life of your quilt is how close you quilt it.this quilt seems to be quilted close together.
a video on batting would be great
I literally just bought this fabric bundle last week 🎉
Looks like you have a knack for picking out great fabric bundles! It's time to sew something wonderful up! ✨🙌🏼
I would like a video on batting choices and uses.
Thanks for this video. I am brand new to quilting and this information was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Batting tutorial would be wonderful. Thank you for the care sheet!
Awesome, glad you liked the care sheet! Stay tuned for the batting tutorial, it's going to be a long one possibly - I have a lot to say lol 🥰
As a newbie, i really alleviate this video. 😊😊
Good to know, thanks!
Definitely would love a video on batting, types, when to use which one
I hope to do one, stay tuned.
It's beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Hey Christen! Great video. I bought some Pioneer Woman material but haven't decided what to do yet. It is yardage not fat quarters. I will think of something 😀😍🤩
How about a Churn Dash?
So many creative ideas running in my mind, the sky is the limit my friend.
@@wandawalker4191 I found a pattern for a Churn Dash. I think that is a fantastic idea. I'm adding it to my list of to do projects! Thanks Wanda
Thank you!
Some of it was pioneer woman yardage and I believe the middle was Katerina roccella fabric
Thanks
Thank you so much for watching. I will work on getting more videos about this.
I have some of that fabric in my stash
Did we just become fabric twins? 😄 Time to pull it out and sew something wonderful with it!
The 3rd quilt from the top, hanging on your quilt ladder... it is so pretty. I love the curvy cuts. How did you do that?
They are hexagons 🥰 and I used a template to cut them out and piece them together!
Yes batting video❤😊🎉
Very nice fabric, and based on the screen shot you showed, quite affordable! I'm going to try bamboo batting, which I've never used. I live in Nevada and it gets pretty hot, so at our house we just don't need really warm quilts, which is why I stay away from Cuddle or flannel.
Thank you for your kind words! Bamboo batting sounds like a great choice for a lightweight quilt in a hot climate.
I've seen so many fun things made with her fabric! The ideas and options are endless 🥰
Thanks!

I wash and iron Walmart quilting fabric before sewing. Tightens right up.
Thank you for sharing!
Weird, I was just thinking about bamboo for my quilt sandwich…and wondering if it was worth it. So happy to have landed on this video. Thank you!
Perfect! I love it!
Thank you for the advice about the bamboo batting! I want to make a quilt for my son and daughter-in-law but they get hot easily. I have a feeling the bamboo batting will do the trick! Is there a specific brand that you recommend?
I'm glad you found the advice helpful! Bamboo batting is great for quilts and should help with the heat issue.
Thank you for doing this. It's good to know!
It's always great to share knowledge and learn from each other, right? 🌼
Thank you for doing this. I don’t always buy Walmart fabric, but I do buy some. Pioneer Woman fabric is a favorite and W think it rivals some of the other best brands ❤
You are so welcome!
Oooh I'm so glad I watched this. I've been hunting for a good pattern to make my dad a quilt, and I think the one you linked to would be perfect. Your quilt turned out gorgeous.
Thank you so much, that is so sweet. I would love to hear how yours comes out.
Definitely please do a video o the different battings and how to determine the best way to make a decision on which to use for our individual projects. Thank you Kristen!!!
Of course! A batting video is a great idea. Thanks for sharing
I have bamboo sheets and absolutely hate them, I find them always wrinkled and way too warm…but….I have a bamboo T-Shirt and love it! I even love to sleep in it.
I love the bamboo sleepers for kids etc, but I know everyone has there own preference.
I have noticed a few comments mentioning how they love waverly and pioneer but some are not good quality. Can you do a video demonstrating how to tell if a fabric is worth the buy? I dont have anyone to shop with me and teach me oh you see this?! Dont get that 😂. Yes to ypur batting video as well!!😊
Thank you for the suggestion! I appreciate your feedback and will make sure to cover this topic in an upcoming video.
Fellow Texan. You are right...we rarely need warm bedding but sometimes we do. Glad to hear the WMT fabric worked out. I love WMT generally.
Was this quilt done on a long arm or domestic machine? Still looks fabulous and I will buy bamboo for my husband's quilt project because he is hot all the time lol
I free-motion quilted it on my longarm machine. Let me know what you think about the bamboo batting!
tried the quilt care download on two different mail boxes, nothing...
