Yeah same thing in my amateur theatre group, we do about 10 or 11 performances per play but there are literally no replacements at all. Every single person has to be on. And every winter at least one person in the cast gets really sick and then usually spreads it around, so we've often had at least one person with a high fever and several people with sore throats and stuff on stage. No fun for anyone but show must go on. One time one girl brook.her foot or sth after the first show and did all other shows on crutches. So yeah, swings are amazing. ^^
The cast is so connected, that’s one of the reasons why this is my favorite show! also imagine being in those swings positions? round of applause to them
Abby Well, only Eric Anthony Johnson covered for a role he had never rehearsed for. The other swings consisted of Sean Montgomery as Adam, Will Blum as Beetlejuice, and Brooke Engen, Zachary Daniel Jones, and Katie Lombardo taking up ensemble parts that they, for the most part, rarely ever touch.
You had some really good input on the situation! I noticed that one of the actors reposted, didn’t they? I don’t quite recall who, but anyway, I saw it reposted on their story and thought you had great points! ThatGuyDylan _ Yup! This was on Valentine’s Day, and Sophia just pulled out seven days ago, so she was in it that night. People who missed the show: Kelvin Moon Loh / on vacation Alex Brightman (for Act II) / injured David Josefsburg / cancelled train Abe Goldfarb / medical leave It doesn’t seem like too many,, until you take into account that two of those individuals have huge roles and two of them are ensemblists who needed to have people step in for them for every dance and minor part.
Something similar, but on less of a big scale happened when I saw Hamilton- the guy playing Hamilton was injured (I think he sprained a foot or something) during Non-Stop so the guy playing James Reynolds had to go on for him in the second act and he was replaced by his understudy.
Woah what a fucking ride. When she said Alex had to leave after the first half, I was SHOOK like you can't just switch out freaking Beetlejuice in the middle of the show - when Jeff said that Alex injured himself *in the opening number* though I was mad impressed that he still did the entire first half anyway. Hoo boy, what a freaking team effort to still keep the show going despite all this.
Also, I’m honestly kind of jealous of the people that saw this performance. They got to see BOTH Beetlejuices, multiple people who don’t always get to go on, and saw magic take place right before their eyes without even realizing it! I would have loved to seen this performance and then learned about what was happening afterwards and being like 😱.

This amazing! I was a swing in School of Rock Brazil and I also understudied Patty Di Marco. One time I had to play Patty and the rest of the ensemble at the same time (including one of the No Vacancy members) because the male swing, the actress who played Patty and another cast member all got incredibly sick that day! Being a swing in musical theater is SO AMAZING!
I actually saw the show that night!! Let me tell you, Eric was SO GOOD AS OTHO!!! Not to mention Sean as Adam was incredible. They all handled it so well and I cant imagine the stress they were going through
My school just closed a show and we have 3 people sick during one show 2 of the 3 had to leave early so out director had to go on for the scenes that needed them. I don't think we had a performance with every actor there.... We had 6 shows and our director performed 2 of the 6 shows
Christian Watson Vergara Not a dumb question at all! A swing is just an understudy for multiple roles. So, if you’re a swing, you have to memorize lines, choreography, etc. for all the roles you’re covering. If one actor is out, you’re in. If a different actor during another show is out, you’re in that different role. Pretty awesome stuff!
I was in a show and after a few shows, half of the actors got sick. Problem was: we didn’t have any swings/understudies. Eventually everyone managed to perform while being very, very sick. But we’re getting understudies next year to avoid this.
I just watched your Feb. 14 vlog, and that’s so awesome! Also, I figured I’d mention that I was also at JTF this year, because I saw that you vlogged that, too. 👀 👀
nell cullen He sprained his ankle during "The Whole Being Dead Thing". I don't know which part of the number he hurt his ankle, but I'm guessing that it happened when he jumped off of the coffin.
Lea Is a duff Kelvin Moon Loh couldn’t be at the show as Otho, but Otho’s understudies had to go on for bigger roles, leaving no one to play Otho! So Eric Anthony Johnson had to learn the whole role in a 15-20 minute intermission. It was very impressive on his part.

One time one girl brook.her foot or sth after the first show and did all other shows on crutches.
So yeah, swings are amazing. ^^
The cast is so connected, that’s one of the reasons why this is my favorite show!
also imagine being in those swings positions? round of applause to them
Ok so I’m kinda confused, what characters were the swings on for (all 6 of them) and who covered roles they had never done before?
Abby Well, only Eric Anthony Johnson covered for a role he had never rehearsed for. The other swings consisted of Sean Montgomery as Adam, Will Blum as Beetlejuice, and Brooke Engen, Zachary Daniel Jones, and Katie Lombardo taking up ensemble parts that they, for the most part, rarely ever touch.
Freelance Bioexorcist thank you 😊 I was just curious about the other 3 swings that weren’t mentioned specifically
Omg thanks so much for including my post in your video!!!💖💖🥰
You had some really good input on the situation! I noticed that one of the actors reposted, didn’t they? I don’t quite recall who, but anyway, I saw it reposted on their story and thought you had great points! I’m so glad you’re alright with the use of it, aha, because I never expected this video to blow up like it has. 40,000k views is unreal!
Freelance Bioexorcist Yes they did! Eric and Natalie reposted it on their stories :)
OMG our school went to this show! crazy to think that was going on backstage. swings are amazing!
Veronica Cain I AM SO JEALOUS, aha! That’s incredible! I hope you enjoyed the show!
@@freelancebioexorcist174 LOL, yeah, it was so good. we were really confused when we heard that Alex wasn't on for act 2, but now I know! also, Eric was so good as Otho.
I want to be in the show with a burning passion.
Man I need a list of who all missed the show. Was Sophia in the show still when this all went down lol
ThatGuyDylan _ Yup! This was on Valentine’s Day, and Sophia just pulled out seven days ago, so she was in it that night.
People who missed the show:
Kelvin Moon Loh / on vacation
Alex Brightman (for Act II) / injured
David Josefsburg / cancelled train
Abe Goldfarb / medical leave
It doesn’t seem like too many,, until you take into account that two of those individuals have huge roles and two of them are ensemblists who needed to have people step in for them for every dance and minor part.
Freelance Bioexorcist jeez!!! That must have been a lot. maybe that’s why Sophia left 😂😂😅😅
Something similar, but on less of a big scale happened when I saw Hamilton- the guy playing Hamilton was injured (I think he sprained a foot or something) during Non-Stop so the guy playing James Reynolds had to go on for him in the second act and he was replaced by his understudy.
His Otho looks like Carmen Ghia stopped by for the night. Too funny.
Welcome to the show, this is a show with six swings!
Ugh TALENT
The waterfall of paper slips that feel out of everyone’s playbills that night.😂🤣
This comment made me laugh 😭💀 But ugh, same! I would’ve loved to be at this show. Apparently some people felt ripped off that Alex left halfway through, but they got to see both Betelgeuses in one night! I would personally not be complaining. That sounds amazing.
@@freelancebioexorcist174 Oh my gosh! Thank you for the heart and comment! I totally agree! I would have been blown away if I got to see both in one night, and all those people that don’t usually go on. Not to mention it seems they all did an AMAZING job with the performance, even though they were all secretly having a panic attack.😆
I literally saw the show on that day omgggg
the swings are the most important part of theater!!
I was there that night it was the best play everyone was amazing love otho and all the cast would go again worth the price of admission definitely :)
So funny thing I actually was there for the show and it was just as they said everything was crazy but it still went off without a hitch. I loved it!
DUDE I WAS TRYING TO FIND THESE VIDEOS FOREVER
That’s why it pays to be flexible ;-) great work swings and understudies!
big GG to the company and ALL the swings that night
I cry inside every time I think of how far away newyork is from my place of dreary no Broadway oregon... I wish I could see the show... T^T
there are other large cities that get the broadway productions. obviously ny is first run main stuff etc but ill bet there are places closer to you that will show them when they go on the road. ill bet youll find it near you...but you may have to make it a mini vacation thing. im in chicago and we get the big stuff here when they go on road.
i was a swing for show choir and it made me want to cry (i did cry ) , its so stressful props to them
i was at this show and they pulled off everything amazingly
This amazing! I was a swing in School of Rock Brazil and I also understudied Patty Di Marco. One time I had to play Patty and the rest of the ensemble at the same time (including one of the No Vacancy members) because the male swing, the actress who played Patty and another cast member all got incredibly sick that day!
Being a swing in musical theater is SO AMAZING!
I actually saw the show that night!! Let me tell you, Eric was SO GOOD AS OTHO!!! Not to mention Sean as Adam was incredible. They all handled it so well and I cant imagine the stress they were going through
Swings and understudies are the superhero’s of Broadway.
*need i say more?*
Being a theatre kid myself, I FELT the stress watching these videos 😂
I watched that show that day!
could you tell alex was hurt?? i can't imagine having to do a whole act with a sprained ankle
im going to see this in march and im so excited !!!!!!!
Man I can't wait to see what will happen next ye- oh.
I FUCKING LOVE THEATRE
ALSO I THINK I LOVE YOU
The Otho swing should have just be alex brightman's understudy in everything because they look so similar!
that sounds like a nightmare! glad everything worked out okay tho
It was so WILED
Man I just got really bad anxiety lol
“When your dead, who gives a sht?”
*injures ankle*
My school just closed a show and we have 3 people sick during one show 2 of the 3 had to leave early so out director had to go on for the scenes that needed them. I don't think we had a performance with every actor there.... We had 6 shows and our director performed 2 of the 6 shows
this was the day before i saw it so i had Will and he was AWESOME (though it would’ve been cool to have Alex, i loved Will)
I saw Will, too! Will’s portrayal is absolutely incredible. :) I love his energy!
does anyone know which part of the track the ensemble swings were on?? just wondering ahahah
i saw this show, had no idea all this happened during the performance lol
I'm feeling so stressed by only watching this video
So who bring the peacock feathers?
And people who don't know theater say that understudies and swings aren't important. This had me sweating 😅 Props to everyone 👏 🙌
the opening scene is the funeral scene ... so how tf did alex hurt himself ? :(
Dumb question. What's a swing?
Christian Watson Vergara Not a dumb question at all! A swing is just an understudy for multiple roles. So, if you’re a swing, you have to memorize lines, choreography, etc. for all the roles you’re covering. If one actor is out, you’re in. If a different actor during another show is out, you’re in that different role. Pretty awesome stuff!
@@anya._sunshine So basically an awesome person haha thanks for answering!! Newbie here lmao
@@urozzom Of course! Welcome to the community! :)
I was in a show and after a few shows, half of the actors got sick. Problem was: we didn’t have any swings/understudies. Eventually everyone managed to perform while being very, very sick. But we’re getting understudies next year to avoid this.
Damn, that must’ve been stressful! Yeah, understudies are amazing. I’m glad you’re getting some next year.
What happened to Alex because he hurt himself
Mmm yes
Como cuando ya lo viste en Instagram xD
Awwwww I hope Alex is ok
Destry Jeffers Yup! Alex is fine. He missed the next four shows (two days) following the incident, but he’s back at it again!
When you came to the performance and vlogged it
I just watched your Feb. 14 vlog, and that’s so awesome! Also, I figured I’d mention that I was also at JTF this year, because I saw that you vlogged that, too. 👀 👀
Wait does that clip prove there’s a full recording of the whole ordeal?
im not typically into musicals but beetlejuice is a masterpeice. Now, i can tell that just by the title that music man will be shit
I WAS THERE!!!
Noa Avrahami I SO WISH I WAS THERE. Everyone’s saying the show was great!
Whose watching this now Beetlejuice has been shut
Jesus Christ how did this show get cancelled this is fucking bullshit! They pulled this off so amazingly well!!
I was at this show :))
what happened to alex brightman?
nell cullen He sprained his ankle during "The Whole Being Dead Thing". I don't know which part of the number he hurt his ankle, but I'm guessing that it happened when he jumped off of the coffin.
I saw it the next day 😂
Ellyana Snyder Ooh, you saw it on the same day I posted this video! Hope you had fun.
can some one pls tell me what happen in still confused
Lea Is a duff Kelvin Moon Loh couldn’t be at the show as Otho, but Otho’s understudies had to go on for bigger roles, leaving no one to play Otho! So Eric Anthony Johnson had to learn the whole role in a 15-20 minute intermission. It was very impressive on his part.
i think someone said the m word in the theatre that day
Who did Brooke go on for?
stupee I’m not entirely certain, but it was said that she went on for various ensemble parts!
Wait I'm dumb who's otho?
Otho is Delia’s guru who is introduced in Act 2 to rid the house of Beetlejuice!
Oh thanks!
Is it weird that i dream of this happening to me? like idk
vince??
-bohemian.marauders
anna Yeah, it’s me! Hey! I started a channel and it’s gotten a pretty fair amount of views, so yep, I have a YT channel now, lol
LMAOOO
