In my younger years a car gave me a lot of "freedom" to escape, make plans with friends, travel places on the cheap, etc.
Ten years later I have ditched my car and live completely bike and train based and I got to tell you it's not only the money you save, it's the fact that you have one fewer thing to worry about.
But this is Europe, things are way easier for car-free living here. We even have sidewalks.

you have the right mindset. I'm 39, married and have a kid, but I'm proud that we as a family have only owned one car which we share for the past ten years. Basically stay away from owning a car until you really have a need to have one.

Def think about getting a cargo bike or trailer in the future. Its amazing what you can move by bike with that and a backpack. That basically means you can avoid car use almost entirely.

Hello, my name is Matthias Ulbrich. I'm 37 years old and i have to confess: I never made a drivers license. The last time I spent time behind a steering wheel I was 16 years old and this was the point in my life I made the decision that i will never again drive a death machine and I never regretted it since then.

very good! i had my license at 19, but bought my first car at 37. only because my job was out of town. The rest i cycled. and i still regret buying the car. i stopped biking and my condition was gone after a year.

Well, cycling had a different effect on you than most people.
Most people find bicycles are hard work and they leave never to return.
Who ever gave you a steering wheel at a young age was ambitious.
By the time people are old enough to comprehend you've wasted your youth.
Luxury must be treated with respect.
Anything above walking is total luxury.

I have not driven a car in 15 years, i live in a small town and just cycle everywhere i need to go. I had a few different bikes to start with but for the last 10 years i've just been riding my $150 fixie, in that time i've only had to replace my bar tape and seat once and a handful of tires and tubes. I enjoy not having to pay a car loan, maintenance, insurance, gas or the stress of someone stealing or denting it.

I haven't owned a car or had a license in roughly eight or nine years, which has allowed me to be able to actually pay my bills, live comfortably and do the things I want, when I want. I have been able to pursue an artistic passion of drawing and painting and invest in quality materials and supplies as needed. I am currently rounding up parts for my first ever bike build, a fixie, and I am stoked to be able to afford that!! In the past i have had geared beach cruisers, road bikes and even single speeds. Def looking forward to building a bike on my own terms and something I can be proud of...as I peddle off into the new year. Cheers Zach!! Love your channel and the content you put out. Riding my bike everywhere (and not owning a car) has made it possible for me to attend a university and helped me find work easier during this pandemic (delivering food!). I total agree with the mental/emotional need that riding a bike fulfills. I hate weeks where I ride less due to life, because riding is fun and I find myself struggling to stay motivated/productive/happy/all those good things.

I gave up cars when I moved to Taiwan seven years ago. Sometimes I think I've spent a lot on my bicycles until I compare it with the expenses of car ownership. I have not calculated it precisely, but it's in the same ballpark as you. Sometimes I miss driving, but I sure don't miss owning a car. Parking alone would cost me more per month than my bikes have cost me.

Well for me a little different and mostly my fault......I had my license suspended sometime ago....so again my fault.....still needed to move around go to work just like anyone else. So I needed to figure it out on my own. Sold my car (couldn’t drive it) got a nice bike paid all legal fees cleaned up my act got healthier and I really really liked biking every where. I was able to spot hole in the walls to get a bite to eat that you’ll never find unless you know about it and definitely wouldn’t spot them with a car. Got fit. Real fit. Dated beautiful girls some much younger than me. And honestly I’m content and happier with myself. Mostly work from home or just a bike ride away. And saved a significant amount of money because I don’t own a car or have to pay registration gas insurance and regular maintenance.
Zach is right though...about girls if she’s materialistic to where she expects you to take her out and buy her things stay away...in fact friendzone her first if you can it’s just you and your bike. both achieving goals! .....but if she likes nice things and gets them all on her own and isn’t worried about what you drive...what’s up 😏
Oh and thank goodness for Uber and all the other ride shares and food delivery services. See you don’t need a car!

I only use the car for passengers and occasionally volunteer work moving donated food. Dont own my own car either just a motorcycle and 2 bikes. The thing I hate most about driving is the innability to avoid issues. You basically only have braking and accelerating and a bit of steering since youre generally confined to one or two lanes. With bikes, pedal or motor powered, you can use every inch of the road surface as well as go offroad if the situation requires. That manueverability in tight spaces can actually make riding faster than driving in crowded cities.

I'm almost twice your age, but have never owned a car, and don't plan to get one ever. I do have a driver's license, so I can rent one if I absolutely have to.
The problem with massive car ownership, besides the obvious, is that it makes alternative modes of transport harder. When everyone has a car, public transport gets cut, bikes get no infrastructure and cities are no longer walkable. Instead they become congested and polluted, and not very pleasant to stay in, so we build suburbs to get away from them, where you almost have to have a car to get anywhere. It's like a vicious cycle, that is fortunately starting to change in many places, as more and more people are realizing that this is not sustainable, or maybe they're just tried of being stuck in traffic and envy the cyclists that fly past them on their way to work. 😁

Because of covid, my job went away. With that so did my ability to make a car payment. So the bank Repoed my car. That was the best thing to happen to me lately. It forced me to finish my bike project. I have an '80s MTB converted to a 1X with V-brakes and all new parts. The return on that investment came in health benefits. I am no longer scheduled for knee surgery, my arthritis is almost gone, I am on the minimum Bp meds, and I have lost 60lbs. So now I am saving up for a Wabi because I am now in good enough shape to ride a single gear. I do not miss the car (not that is was a bad thing), I do not miss the payments, insurance licensing, etc. I am now 65 and(I work that excuse for being crazy). Tomorrow, I ride my bike to give blood (how's that for ya?) after I go grocery shopping.

I have just been able to get a driver's license recently and I'm not sure if I'm ready to add another car or motorcycle to my daily life because I don't have the need or space for one. I have about 200-400 in my bank after I pay bills and buy food. I have a Bikesdirect Dawes Streetfighter so I know that if my transportation was ever compromised I could completely replace it without it breaking me.

Hey there, would it be possible for you to have a gear/part/component review for navigate trispoke rims. I've been planning to put one on my steel sgm fixed gear bike but have my worries as to would my heavy, steel frame be in any way affect (break or crack) navigate trispoke wheelset.
Love your vids btw and still waiting for more upcoming fixed gear bike vids.

I like riding bikes because it saves me time. I probably spend a bit more on my bike than what I would have spent on my regular commute but a 2 hour commute turned into a 1 hour bike ride/workout, hell yeah! Now crazy about cycling ever since and would be happy if I can bike wherever I go.

I want to buy a bike to go to work at leaast 3 times a week, i rode a fixed gear (80’s guerciotti pista) when i was younger but sold it a while ago.
I had lower back surgery 2 years ago, gained a lot of weight so biking to work seems like a fun way to get more active again, been doing powerlifting training 3times a week now for a couple of months too.
The distance to my work is 15/16 miles so it would be between 30/32miles RT, no hills or anything but it can get windy here.
I really love the simplicity, looks and feel of a fixed gear bike but i’m not sure being overweight, not having a lot of stamina etc if it’s the best choice for me, have also been looking at gravel and road bikes but seeing it’s a big investment i would love to hear what you guys think, maybe someone here is or has been in a similar situation

And I like to cycle I own a fat bike. And you're so right that if somebody's going to judge you based off of how you live your life. Because that's what makes you happy that's not somebody you should have in your life LOL but keep it up with the videos man they are motivating

Having a bike is also a great excuse as to never giving people lifts.

Yes, but as we all know money is time, a bike is, faster but costs ten times more than shoes, a car is even faster and costs at least ten times more than a bike, since the point is saving walking is best, and if you need some speed sometimes think of bus, subway, streetcar, a friends car, etc

The bit about dating at 12:30!
    Facts, preach that
Spending money to make it to look like you have money means you have Less money 😂
‘Cool, I have a $100,000 Car’ just means I have $100,000 less money..
And that’s if you paid cash, if you got that on finance, you have way less money
People are caught up in this idea that if they have the materialistic positions that the rich and wealthy do, that they too are then part of the rich and wealthy club. The problem is,
You spent all your money trying to get there
They spent chump change to get there
    To potential dates:
Yes, I arrived on a bike, which means I can afford your steak. You’re welcome
