I bought a ticket to see Sam perform 2 years ago and, also being a fan of Archer, was immensely surprised to see him play alongside. After the show I spoke with Archer for a bit and he could not have been a cooler guy, incredibly nice. I spoke briefly with Sam and, while I tried not to gush, gave him praise as before then I didn't think I'd ever get a chance to see him tour. He had a very bright smile and signed my Old Punch Card CD. So happy I had the opportunity to see them play.
I saw Sam and Archer play a show around 2004 and it was great. I spoke with Archer for about 10 minutes and had the same experience. He is such an incredibly nice guy. I asked him about all his Danelecro guitars and effects and he of course enjoys talking about it. The thing I took away from seeing these 2 live is that Archer is really a much more technical guitarist and really creates all of the melody. Sam is a great songwriter but these 2 together has always been such a great guitar sound IMO. The only other guitarist duo I would put in the same league in terms of melodic guitar playing is Chris Walla and Ben Gibbard. I met Sam but I don't think meet and greet are his thing.
That's great, I was likely thirty years old. Had two great friends in Chicago. I saw The sea and Cake, and Toroise several times. Amazing as Poets, lyricaly stunning music.
Sometimes I try to explain exactly what Sam's music has been over decades, and what The Sea and Cake was, to folks. It's kinda like jazz and poetry and those other things where it just seems to click for some. Not to say people who "get it" are smarter--not at all--just that it is art that speaks to certain people and to others sounds like a mess. IDK! I love it, either way.
How come Sam's voice doesn't get old at all? :)
I cannot help but love their music.
Man, I love this song and live version…. ❤
