All 3 of those rpgs are better the 3-5 on this list. And shining force is leaps and bounds better the panzer dragoon saga. Its one of the most overrated games of all time. Shining force 3 can be played now, all 3 scenarios in english. Its def better then this entire list

@Gene Bone Alb's Oddysey is overall a average game. It was SNES game converted for Saturn. The humor localization) in the game takes it to another level.
Yeah and it wasn't a "departure" from previous Shining titles. It was pretty much the successor to Shining in the Darkness on the Genesis... and it doesn't play like a limited Skyrim (or ANY Elder Scrolls title). It plays like... Shining in the Darkness! Only more advanced and wider in scope. You could also compare it to the first person D&D dungeon crawlers on PC like Eye of the Beholder. Oh, and you don't use the pixies like Pokémon, at all. You fight your own battles. The Pixies are just like a free extra attack. I appreciate the video but Xyphur definitely isn't an old Sega guy haha. I'd also definitely put this game above Dark Savior, which was really an action RPG-ish with wonkey controls. Landstalker had tighter controls. He also forgot/didn't know that you could LOSE to Bilan as a third viable option. Not sure if there are more paths.
Debatable Sega Gen had great games on it and the company is still around releasing old and new titles for the system so they couldnt have done that bad if theyre making a comeback.
Dark Savior had multiple story lines based on how fast you complete the first mission on the ship. It was super hard to get to some of them because you needed to be speedrun good
Shining Force III is the most epic game of 32-bit era now that all 3 discs and premium disc are translated. The great thing about Shining Force III and Panzer Saga is they are the rare RPGs where you get excited for pretty much every battle.
Dude that game was amazing. You just reminded me about dragon force 2 and how I was disappointed it was Japan only. 20+ years later future me forgot about it and turns out there's been a fan translation out. Time to play

Shining the Holy Ark is most closely related to the first game in the Shining series, Shining in the Darkness for Genesis/Mega Drive. I remember magazines of the day claiming that the team that made Darkness were ex Dragon Quest staff.
It took me ages to rediscover Dark Savior, because every time I'd describe it to someone they'd be all, 'No way something like that was released on the Saturn.' I really miss these old games. Big developers now are more focused on destroying franchises for a quick buck than making a memorable, quality product. Thank god for indie devs, but even that pool seems to be thinning out.
The only one of these I ever played was Dragonforce, and and I have to agree that it was one of the most fun games I have ever played. Another one of my favorite Saturn RPGs was Mystaria.

@Gene Bone yeah, Saturn is the best Sega console when we talk about RPGs, it has a lot of gems, for me Panzer Dragoon Saga and Princess Crown are the best the genre has to offer in this system, but of course Grandia, the two Lunar games, Story of Thor 2, Shining the holy ark, Shining Force III, Magic Knight Reyearth, Shin Megami Tensei Soul Hackers, Langrisser IV, Albert Oddyssey....they are all true gems

That has nothing to do with spoilers: Forte is possessed within the first 15 minutes of the game. Also, this game has almost nothing in common with Skyrim or Pokemon. And calling every haunted mansion "Resident Evil Style" is kind of a stretch. It is awkward how he keeps comparing this game to any popular franchise that is superficially similar.

"Not many rpgs utilized the first person perspective at all in the 90s"
That's flat out wrong.
There were actually many RPGs that did use the first person perspective in the 1990s. These are just to name a few Ultima Underworld, Ishar 1, 2, and 3, Lands of Lore 1, 2, and 3, System Shock, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, Stonekeep and many others. Check your sources next time.
Phantasy Star on Master System used it in 1987
Shin Megami Tensai as well
Great video 👍🏿🤟🏿
I've been playing Dark Savior the platforming is pretty janky but it's still fun. Dragon force is beyond me how to play it, I have both 1 and 2 translated and I'm like uhhh I don't know what I'm doing
Grandia was a good one.
you totally missed Magic Knight Rayearth.
Subpar graphical power huh? Not really...
0:40 "The top 5 Sega Saturn RPGs you've probably never heard of..." Dang, such a hipster. But seriously, I can't believe you said it like that without realizing how goofy that sounds.
not sure on this selection, but there were many great games
Apparently, the maker of this video has never heard of Dungeon Crawlers. Most 80's and early 90's non japanese RPGs used a first person perspective, games like Wizardry, Might and Magic, Bard's Tale, Eye of the Beholder, etc. Good list though.
DEADPOOL9AND The very first Shining game Shining in the Darkness was a first person jrpg so contrary to what he said it wasn't a departure from the series. Baroque and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Soul Hackers are two more first person jrpgs on the Sega Saturn.
Forte was possessed by the bad spirit... Arthur Rodi Melody are the main 3.
I just came here to say that's a bad ass intro....well that and... wheres shining in the darkness???
Shining in the Darkness was on Genesis/Megadrive.
so, legend of oasis is like the alundra of saturn? XD
retrovideogamejunkie not really maybe a very light version. Alundra is miles better.
Think "Landstalker". Same company though.
Legend of Oasis is like the Beyond Oasis of the Saturn. ;)
Bro you completely left out the Shining Force 3 Trilogy which is one of the best SRPG's I've ever played on any console.
What?!? No Cyberdoll?
Eh, who am I kidding? Nobody has heard of this Japan only release. It needs a translation ASAP.
I'm still waiting on that Rurouni Kenshin RPG for PS1.
@@rainehappy7097 And I'm still waiting for that Madara 2 snes translation. It's been 12 or 13 years now since that project started. In the end, I decided to start learning Japanese myself. As the saying goes: if you want something done, do it yourself.
This is why you own a Playstation for RPG's.
the best rpg of note on the play station for me was final fantasy 7.i remember being amazed wene i played that as a kid.
I only dont play Shining Ark. Good Times.
Grandia is nice but on Saturn only in japanese
WHat? Shining the Holy Ark looks like Golden Sun, are the makers of Golden Sun the same as Shining?
Yeah Camelot needs to go back to their roots. Now they can be seen making Nintendo sports games. I don't mind them but Camelot has sooo much potential to be a great studio.
Sonic Software Planning became Camelot.
Shining force is the best
do you remember a rpg game that has a man using a gun with a gem? and there is another game adventure like that you play in a farm, but tottaly 3d.
Harvest Moon?
Wild Arms?
@@rainehappy7097 the game of the guy who has a gun with a gem at the end of it is a rpg with anime like art.
@@rainehappy7097 but the second one I remembered, it's Dragon Lore... I really dunno if it's form saturn lol. but thanks
@@rainehappy7097 Tengai Makyo: The apocalypse 4. Found it! Thanks
Subpar graphical palette MY ASS.
Strictly on specs, it was way more powerful than the PS1. It was though, much harder to program, and suffered from a rushed launch and not-great marketing (esp. compared with Sony).
Regardless i am flad the Saturn and games like rhis existed and still do
The Saturn wasn’t obliterated by Sony, the Saturn was obliterated by the company Sega. Also the Saturn was a powerhouse for it’s time and could properly do 3D, it was just more difficult for game developers to work with than Sony’s PlayStation which was easier to program.
.... Shining force....
