I bought that exact same guitar for only $80. Over two years ago. I play it every day and I frankly cannot believe how beautiful it sounds. It was clearly set up well. I’m gleefully astonished.
I've been playing my Recording King for about a year now . I'm amazed at how versatile it is . I play weekly with 3 - 4 other pickers . They laughed when they saw it and thought it was a toy . I have no trouble being heard or keeping up with their Taylor , Martin , Ovation , or Ibanez instruments . When I tried different / larger guitars their sound sort of got lost in the mix . Plays well , stays in tune , light and durable . My friends aren't laughing any longer !
I just bought one of these little babies today. Fresh out the box (or off the music shop wall) it plays great. The action is perfect, no adjustment needed. The strings seem really good, and the overall finish is pretty darn good. I might polish the satin out though... it's a bit rough in some spots. I think a semi-gloss finish would look cool on this kinda guitar. Anyway, it sounds really nice in person. It's pretty fuckin loud if you give it some, you know? It's not as beefy as a dread but that's part of the charm of a parlour. Likewise for gentle fingerpicking it's clear and sweet. I've been playing guitar for 8 years (mainly classical but I like to noodle on a steel string) and I've played a lot of expensive guitars, but this is the one I walked out with.
Picked one up over the weekend at GC for $100 used. Never heard of this model. I can tell you I would put it up against any lower line Taylor and most lower end Martins. I played them all and kept coming back to this one. The action is insanely good. Not a ton of bottom end but the mids project like crazy. It sits in my parlor and I want to pick it up and play it every time I see it. Highly recommended even at new price. Excellent build and nice Kluson style tuners.
+Dan Stout As do I. Nice projection and crazy active. I barely touch the strings and they RING. The 12 fret makes it really easy to bend and slide. The $199 retail is now down to around $150 at GC, but who cares? It's worth a lot more than the retail.
I own two of the Recording King guitars, one the 12th fret and the other 14th at the body and they sound excellent. Intonations are spot on, they came without needing setup. It's amazing that you can get a product this good mass produced from a factory in Asia for such a low price. Because they are mass produced you can usually find them in good shape second hand. I am tempted to get this model and the dreadnought size just to have the complete size lineup.
Just bought one, and as an owner of top of the line Matons and an Ovation I can say this is seriously impressive, very playable, intonation great, tone great and it really has that *ping.
Just bought this for my son's birthday. It's his second guitar, and it was only £80, but it sounds amazing. I can't believe how good it is for the price. My son loves it. Obviously when my lad gets a guitar I get one too and I'm loving playing it.
You make this sound awesome! I was disappointed with mine, sounded very boxy to me when strumming. I ended up removing a ton of bracing from the inside of the guitar and it sounds a lot better to me now, and doesn't seem to suffer from any warpage about 6 months later
These are on sale at Guitar Center for $99 through the 4th. I bought one and it works pretty well out of the box. Might be even better with a proper setup!
I don't really know much about guitars but I've been wanting to learn for a while now so I bought one at a garage sale for $40. Now that I've seen the reviews it makes me happy I got it.
I love this guitar! I am a Larrivee and Taylor snob, usually, but I had to sell off my instruments. I got this one on the advice of a friend. It is an amazing guitar.
Just picked up one of these beauties today at guitar center for 99 bucks on sale for the Fourth of July, sounds awesome and looks great too thanks for the good honest review friend
Great review, I saw this guitar for sale somewhere and was looking for reasons I didn't need to spend my money...This video just crushed anything I could come up with. Just take my money!
Tell me about it! This is my second Recording King too (I also have an RO-26, which i LOVE). And I've also got my eye on an R20 banjo when the funds allow. You won't regret the parlor!
HEY!! Mine doesn't sound like that!! Of course, I don't play like that either (just learning)!! But it is nice to see a positive review of it made as I really don't know much about guitars in general. Thanks for posting!!!
This guitar trumps any parlor-sized guitar I've ever played. I'm sure there is some obscure boutique parlor that is better but this is an outstanding guitar period - no "for the money" qualifier. $100 used and it's my go-to and always beside me at home. This, a Seagull Entourage, a Mexi Tele, a Squier Bronco bass, and a Seagull Merlin complete my arsenal.
I'm reading many glowing comments here, but for the benefit of those who have not played this guitar I feel compelled to mention a few things others are not making clear. (1) compared to guitars with a larger body size this guitar has an enhanced midrange with rolled off highs and lows, so don't be expecting the high end sparkle you'd find in a Taylor or the big bass you'd hear in a larger bodied guitar like a dreadnaught, (2) this guitar is best for fingerpicking with bare fingerpads, and a beginner who intends to strum with a flatpick might be disappointed with the tone of parlor size guitars, (3) this guitar is best for certain types of music, such as delta blues or folk, and if you watch other video reviews of this guitar and other parlors you'll see delta blues being played in the vast majority of them, and players of other music styles might be disappointed with its tone, (4) although you can start playing on any guitar you choose, if you are a beginner who is attracted to this guitar because of its compact size, it actually might be better suited for more accomplished fingerstyle players who exemplify the old adage "tone is in the fingers" as those players might get the most out of it, (5) this guitar does an excellent job of replicating the tone of guitars like those formerly made by Stella, Kay or Harmony or the no-name brands found in Sears catalogues in the 1930's, so if this is the tone you're looking for then this is your guitar; if not then keep looking and try a guitar with a concert or orchestra size body or larger, (6) this should go without saying, but never buy a guitar until you've played it, as watching video reviews and reading others' comments are simply not enough to get a clear idea of what it sounds like or plays like.
I have a Recording King 000 ros-g9m all solid wood guitar I got super cheap. It is outstanding for the price. Been looking for a decent and cheap parlor now. The PRS P20 is nice but a bit pricey.
Well, the Jim Dandy has that short scale length which I like. It's easier on the fingers. Plus they got that Gretsch name on it and to me, it looks cool. But these might sound just a mite better.
Hi. I like this sound particularly for open tuned picking. Do u know much about the similar model with the metal tail piece? I'm undecided on which one to buy.
How is this guitar compared to yamaha f310 and takamine gd10 ,i'm looking for a beginner guitar.I want to use it mostly for fingerpicking and maybe blues. I'd like to hear some opinions on my question. Thanks in advance!
Whats the best string for this gutair in your opinion? i play alot of classic stuff like stand by me and elvis. My friene had a gutair with metal and nylon string on his i thought it sounded great do you think i could do that to mine?
I actually like the sound of a smaller guitar more. The dreadnaughts are just supposed to be louder and I'm not even sure they accomplish that to any great degree.
I just recently bought one and amazed at the quality for the price. I find however when playing hard with a flat pick The sound is not great. I'm used to playing a Gibson J 45 and it only gets bigger and fuller the harder you play. I'm thinking about going with heavy gauge strings and raising the action. Has anyone tried that?
I have to admit that the price of this guitar turned me away from it, how can a guitar that inexpensive be any good?. I picked one up the other day though and was surprised how nice it sounded. It's not a strummer, but if you flat or fingerpick it's worth looking into.
What strings brand and gauge are you using on this video? Also, did you end up putting elixir strings? Also where do you think I could find a hard case for it?
do you have any suggestions on songs to sing with open G, easy campfire songs, would they sound okay, my friends have no idea and I would like to do a good job on prine or lightfoot songs, thanks
Nice video! What is the song you play at 2:21 - 3:00? Love it, would like to learn how to play it. Also, did you experience D and G on the 12th fret sounding thin/raspy and having trouble hold tone with bends?
Thanks! --that really means a lot to me! The song at 2:21 is called "Molehu" by Ozzie Kotani. (It's one of the first lessons on Ozzie's slack key instructional DVD, if you're interested in learning.) I haven't experienced any problems with the 12th fret--the guitar has been great, and continues to impress me. (Any flubs that might have come out on the video were probably my own, as a result of being nervous to play on camera. :P)
Mediocre Musician Thank you. Oh no, you're performance was great. I asked because I have this guitar (and love it) but mine "frets out" on the 12th. Sounds like mine needs a proper set-up to fix that. :-)
Thanks for this video! I've been debating between this and the fender parlor sized acoustic that happens to be around the same price. How does strumming sound? You did a bit but no one who has a video of this has done any heavy strumming with it
Hey thanks for watching! Hope you subscribe. :) Yeah, I play more finger style, so I don't have a lot of strumming in the vid. I will say though, when strumming, the sound is really BIG and rich. I was surprised that it's nearly as loud as my OM/000-size guitar.Have you seen Robert Tedrow's videos on the RPH-05? He does more strumming in his (though it's through iphone audio): Recording King RPH-05 $250 just unbelievably nice Recording King RPH-05 $275 Recording King RPH-05 Best $275 guitar...........ever. His vids helped convince me I wanted one. :) Hope it helps!
Hey there, I have a question. Could you tell me if the soundhole is standard size or is it smaller? I was looking at one of these for travelling and the Harley Benton CLF 200 too. I have a soundhole pickup I want to put in it and the smaller soundholes on some small guitars don't fit. Tnx. DP:)
+David Philips Hi! While I haven't actually measured it, I *believe* the soundhole is the same size. If it helps, I have pics of this guitar next to my dreadnought and OM sized guitars on my site, so you can probably get an idea of the size. You can take a look here: www.mediocremusician.com/2014/02/i-love-bang-for-buck-guitars.html
This is a nice instrument, it was advertised on musician's friend and Guitar center as having a solid top, but unfortunately it does not, it is all laminate whitewood. I got one for $100 at GC. It still is a decent guitar.
Do you ting this is a bet better than the Gretsch Jim Dandy? Give or take $50.00/USD - I'm thinking this is a better axe. Also, do you know if any good hardshell cases by chance?
Thanks! I appreciate it. Don't get me wrong--it'd be great for a beginner. But if given a choice, I would always recommend a 14-fret over a 12-fret for a beginner. (I just think it's easier to go from 14 to 12, rather than the other way around.) Of course ultimately, the best thing is to get an instrument that's comfortable to you. :) Thanks again!
get something with nitro, not poly. i've played one, and this has white wood, cheap. get the upper version with herringbone, it's the rp1-327, it'll be a hundred times better. unless you are going to beat the shit out of it, poly will last an atomic explosion, nitro will sound better.
Did you ever purchase the RC parlor? I have one and the action out of the box was way better than I would normally expect. I left it alone for several weeks and just enjoyed the factory setup, which I think most would have left it alone. For my style of playing, I do like the action low. I sanded the nut and saddle and got it right where I like it, which is quite low. I was a bit worried about the frets given the fact that the cost of the guitar so cheap for what you are getting. As it turned out, the frets were spot on. I achieved the action I like, retained the intonation and experience no fret buzz. I don't use this one for heavy strumming... just finger picking style. I honestly couldn't be more happy or excited w/ a guitar. I wasn't as crazy about the finish, as Mediocre Musician mentioned himself. But it has grown on me... but the sound (which I know is subjective) is so good that I really care less how it looks. Although, I have been thinking about applying gun stock / Tru-Oil, sanding and buffing several coats - to see what it would do to the finish. I make purchase a 2nd or B stock off ebay to test if I can find one cheap enough... there are some going for $120 delivered. Anyway, the action is great. The string tension is just right too... I use Martin's PB 12's.
I also have this guitar and i think it's a wonderful alternative to my massive Gibson j200 but I have noticed that it's prone to "killing puppies" aka the squeaks from sliding on the strings. If anybody has any tips on how to prevent them, I would love to hear it.
most guitar companies don't adjust the nut or the saddle on guitars because everyone likes something different. new guitars require a set up, even gibsons, taylors and martins aren't very good right out of the box.
Steve Dyer Haven't played in years but aren't those bronze strings? I always hated those, always made accent strums boom then rattle, also made my hands smell all the time. :P
I bought that exact same guitar for only $80. Over two years ago. I play it every day and I frankly cannot believe how beautiful it sounds. It was clearly set up well. I’m gleefully astonished.

Holy string squeak batman
:)
Couldn't agree more about the shocking volume that came out of this little guitar. Haven't been able to put it down since it arrived.
I have two recording kings now (Resonator and ROS 06). Amazing guitars for the price. I'm a fan for life. Next purchase might be this parlor guitar!
Tell me about it! This is my second Recording King too (I also have an RO-26, which i LOVE). And I've also got my eye on an R20 banjo when the funds allow.
You won't regret the parlor!
I'm really sold on Recording king and they are nice folks to deal with......
Sounds nice! Would love to give it a try sometime.

Such deep tones!!!! and SO much sustain!! Sounds great...and so do you. Thank you for your review. Nice Parlor!! :-) ♥
The sustain surprises me. Nice.
That is a bful looking guitar ! Plays equally beautiful :)

I love how you play slack-key guitar in the style of Raymond Kane on this. Great little guitar and great playing!

Have you played the gretsch jim dandy?
Would also like to know how they compare. I really like my little Jim dandy.
Just bought one a month ago. Had to replace nut and bridge to make it playable. Hated to loose the bone. Action was just too high. Plays great now.
Glad you were able to get it dialed in just right! :)
Did you try adjusting the truss rod? I bought one that was unplayable, but after adjusting the truss rod and changing strings it's so sweet
appears to have good action. that's what I worry about but I also know Greg Rich is behind these designs and he knows what he's doing
I want one, Father's Day is coming soon
You hear that kiddos?!?
Did you get one
@@JDL3777 I did, but I wound up selling it since then.
Should I get this or the Gretsch Jim Dandy?
Well, the Jim Dandy has that short scale length which I like. It's easier on the fingers. Plus they got that Gretsch name on it and to me, it looks cool. But these might sound just a mite better.
I'm looking at it thinking Lemon and Patton....sounds kinda muddy for old blues......really nice for slack key....
Was that Hi'ilawe you were bustin out? That was da kine mo betta!

Mahalo!
Hi. I like this sound particularly for open tuned picking. Do u know much about the similar model with the metal tail piece? I'm undecided on which one to buy.

Thanks so much--that really means a lot to me! :)
Nice. what's the piece you are finger picking nice tune!
Ok so I'm getting my head round the models. I was hoping u may know the duf between the rph 05 and rph07? Unfortunately I can't try before I buy.
I actually like the sound of a smaller guitar more. The dreadnaughts are just supposed to be louder and I'm not even sure they accomplish that to any great degree.
How is the action on this guitar when it came out of the box ? and what string gauge come with it ?

Heavy gauge strings put a tail. piece for your stress of those strings. That's what Stella did..
Save your top on the body..

Mediocre Musician I subscribed! Thanks for those videos. I ordered one It'll be here in two days! They convinced me too haha
WhereTheRainEnds Awesome!! Glad I could help. For the price, you're gonna love this guitar! :)
Usually parlour guitars aren't made for heavy strumming. If that's what you want, then get a dreadnought.
Hi how is the action of this guitar? I'm looking for a low action!
is that ok for strumming?
How is the guitar being miked?
Hey there, I have a question. Could you tell me if the soundhole is standard size or is it smaller? I was looking at one of these for travelling and the Harley Benton CLF 200 too. I have a soundhole pickup I want to put in it and the smaller soundholes on some small guitars don't fit. Tnx. DP:)

it is 1 11/16

12 fret sound is better because the bridge is further down the lower bout.
how do the tuners work ?
Great job Great playing
Thank's 4 sharing"
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Can you play all styles on this guitar or is it more for blues? Thxs!
Great for blues. Also for country music from the 20s and 30s. Folk music .
is there a version with a pickup built in?
they make a version with pickup in it now.
Great review, however, I would think it would be a great guitar for a beginner.
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Don't get me wrong--it'd be great for a beginner. But if given a choice, I would always recommend a 14-fret over a 12-fret for a beginner. (I just think it's easier to go from 14 to 12, rather than the other way around.)

Try flatwound strings like the Magma Flat Phosphor Bronze .010-.048. Coated strings might be a good compromise between flatwounds and roundwounds.

Creepy to see a headless guy making a review, but nice review. Next time, please show your face! hahah
Heh, thanks. I didn't want to distract from the guitar. ;)
He's mediocre, remember!
He's Shy .
ordered one from guitar Center came to me horrible buzzing on strings shouldn't they adjust the guitar before sending it to me
most guitar companies don't adjust the nut or the saddle on guitars because everyone likes something different. new guitars require a set up, even gibsons, taylors and martins aren't very good right out of the box.
I want this
They don't make this model anymore. Unfortunately.
could anybody compare to the gretsch Jim Dandy?
Looks like Robert Johnson’s guitar I’m jelly
Nice slack key!
pretty good, does not stay in tune well
I put Elixir Nanowebs on mine and I can't put it down!
Steve Dyer Haven't played in years but aren't those bronze strings? I always hated those, always made accent strums boom then rattle, also made my hands smell all the time. :P
Richard Smith nah. Nanos are the type of coating. Poly and Nano etc.
right at the very beginning of your playing,it sounded like you were about to pay Fortunate Son, by CCR
The Jim Dandy is much dirtier!
Nice..Haole boy!!
