I left my birth city of Liverpool fifty six years ago. Apart from the accents, the director nailed this one. The set design was exceptional. So many Liverpool landmarks, made me homesick. A great production.
Im not that old and live in Australia on hundreds of acres, but my parents came from Liverpool for a better life, always kept their accents and dosnt sound like these actors
Ferry cross the Mersey? British films of the 50's tended to be comedic, courageous or quirky... This one was exceptional almost like Tennessee Williams and What a shifty eyed lying slag Robert Newton plays... A little too close to his real life.. Excellent film!
WOW! love English films, never saw this one. what a treat. high quality photography, great actors and lively characters round out a very good storyline. i would watch again... a nice surprise, enthralling...

Great little film; stellar performances by the young Burton and the rest of the cast, but Robert Newton was a fantastic actor! Thank you for uploading.
I began listening to this film because it was there on the list of choices. When the Father showed up on the doorstep of the family he had abandoned, I was ready to leave, but stayed a little longer. The narrative unfolding kept causing me to stay. When the murder scene opened I was confused , but stayed just a little longer. Police at the apartment , daughter one and daughter two, struggling to make a better life and then the hopelessness of all their circumstances swept through like a tidal wave - and I found myself thinking, what a great story, who wrote this ? This is an excellent slice of life captured by a group of very talented people. Thank you. 6/2022 USA.
Richard Burton early film career . You notice how high pitched his voice is here in this 1950 film ? 2 stories I have read . 1)born Richard Jenkins, the 12th of 13 children, Burton was brought up in a Welsh-speaking home . His father Philip taught him how to lose his Welsh accent . Also Philip would take Burton to the mountains and make shout Shakespearean speeches for hours and hours. It was a residential vocal boot-camp that went on every day for three years. 2) The young RIchard Jenkins i.e. Richard Burton would go the oceanfront and just scream at the waves . However he changed his voice by 1960 Burton got his baritone-bass , stentorian(loud) voice which he became recognizable and famous at least here in the US .
This fine movie took me back some 53 years when I docked in Liverpool on the 30th of december 1969 with the danish cargo ship ‘Sarghoda’. Newyears eve was spend on the All Nations Club near the dock. The neighbourhood houses looked just like in this film. Wonderful time.
Ship in the opening scene: Clan Alpine was a 7,168 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1942 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Barrie. She was sold to Clan Line Steamers Ltd in 1947 and served with them until 1957 when she was sold to Bullard, King & Co Ltd and renamed Umvoti. In 1959 she was sold back to Clan Line and renamed Clan Alpine. She was sold for scrap in 1960 and wrecked in a cyclone in October 1960 at Chittagong, East Pakistan, finally being scrapped in February 1961.
O my goodness, this was an EXCELLENT film. Raw and real. You know the characters, and you can feel for them. The choices made are real choices, not hollywood fabricated ones. Definitely worth the watch!

My first time watching this today. Lovely film to watch on the first of the New Year 2024. It was a recommendation & I’ve watched a couple of films starrring Robert Newton, he’s a good Actor. Thank you for sharing .
The actor who played Nora was stunning! She captivated the screen with those eyes. Great movie - could've been a serial for the story it told. Thanks for the upload.
Simple, subtle, sublime really; maybe the best of Richard Burton, along with "Rebecca". I have never seen or heard of this movie in my last 61 years here, and these B & Ws w/ UK accents are all I can watch since I had a 9hr round of brain surgery. Films like these that we rarely saw in the US when I was a kid are quite wonderful, and help me understand why many of us here still the the UK as our mother country, even though my parents were Swedes and Germans, second generation. Thanks mr grekko, without the web & people like you posting stuff like this (after a 40ml dose of oxymorphine, with a pinch of clonodine and a couple ibuprophine), my last 8 months of healing a titanium skull patch may have been a lot more difficult... all the best man, for you and yours!

Thank you for sight of the old overhead railway again. Like Richard, below, left about the same time, but I was back on contract when the strikes killed the docks. From where I worked, I could see the ships queued up in Liverpool Bay. Another sight never to be seen again!
God... that was a GREAT film! I was so surprised! Watched it from beginning to end, completely by ACCIDENT!!! Oh the internet has some good things going for it.
A most enjoyable film with an extremely talented cast portraying different types of characters -- warts & all. This is so endemic to post WW II British cinema. The very young Richard Burton with his Welsh tenor voice would be recognizable even if he weren't on screen. As a member of a celebrated emerging group of actors in the 1950s & early 1960s along with Laurence Harvey, Robert Shaw, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, Sean Connery, David McCallum, Alan Bates, Jack Hawkins, Trevor Howard, Peter Finch, Peter O'Toole & my favorite, Stanley Baker -- all working in small, cheaply made films that deserve to be seen over & over again because of their authentic portrayals of British life on every socio-economic strata. Powell, Cardiff, Pressburger & other directors & screenwriters created masterpieces on small budgets when the cinema became a means of escape & fantasy during the war & its hardships after the war. This film is a treasure eith tight editing, Film Noirish cinematigraphy & subtle, subdued, pared down acting by a superb cast headed by Robert Newton, the classic villain whom you know will do something bad.
To all the moaners complaining about the absence of Scoucer accents, spare a thought for the thousands of people from all over the world - outside the UK - who do not know about these sensitivities. They simply love this film for it's brilliance.
Glad this is on UA-cam..Films like this are never on the tele..They should be..The Welsh wizard Richard Burton and Robert Newton used to enjoy a drink making this..
Fine little gem of a film. Had never heard of it before. Robert Newton who plays the ne’er do well husband and father also appeared in the 1948 version of Oliver Twist as Bill Sykes, a villain.
I have always love Liverpool and have never been there, but this film made me feel the relief of joy, happiness, the sadness and the admirable act and places
Maurice was a piece of work! A slimy bas_ _ _ _! I sure liked the mom, Nora and Richard Burton's character. It's so nice to see homes with not a lot of stuff-the cheap plastic crud that is everywhere today. These simple homes look so nice.
I'm not positive,(I'll check it out) that in the opening that it was 1919, in the "slums". They mostly did their best to get on. Nice? The ubiquitous rats had the best environment of all.
@@michaelwertzy9808 I've seen those slums close up, from shortly after this picture was made: a lot of those old properties were life-expired and poorly-maintained by their rentier owners: the houses had thin walls and leaky roofs and inadequate plumbing and -sewers; electricity was an afterthought (some still had gas for lighting). The inhabitants had to live cheek-by-jowl with the entrenched insects, rats and mice. They were often small and poorly-heated, the houses packed together to give the maximum rental-income to their owners: children had nowhere to play safely outside or near their homes, and the factories of the day threw out all kinds of pollution to poison their localities.
The films from the UK from this period about 1935 to about 1980 are great, I would have said 1965 but there were still some that I liked up to about 1980, not as many as before but there were still some. Thank you, please continue.
That was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I used to spend a lot of time in Liverpool and it came back to me during this film. Richard Burton gave a fine performance along with all the cast. I'm surprised I haven't seen this before but I haven't thankyou so much for this very enjoyable film.
@@TheSuperHarrygeorge Yes, that's understandable. This film appeared to pull no punches about the harshness of their lives, and about the way that harshness warped their growth, personalities, and future. Upon re-reading, I wanted to update my reply. Family dynamics are the same for the same socio-economic group of people. Life is still harsh, and that harshness is still warping people's growth, personalities, and future.
Thank you very much for uploading this movie. It is quite a multifaceted tear jerker of a story. I am surprised that Avis Scott wasn't credited with the lead which was given to the actor portraying the father who, in my view is a secondary antagonist character. She went on to a long career. Thanks again!
Thank you I enjoyed it . I think that last scene where they parted was suppose to.be Manchester where the boat had been diverted to, but it looked like liverpool.with the overhead railway ???. I love the black and white old films thank you again for uploading it
Love the old black and whites. Movie was somewhat documentary, good long shots of the docks and surrounding districts and some social commentary on the time. Thank you so much.
I came off a ferry once from Dublin, early in the morning, it was raining, a long time ago, on me way to London, early 70s, but I recognized the terminal at the docks. This film comes under the name: Waterfront Women (1950) at IMDB. It has an incredible array of British talent and stars, under such a foggy title.
What a great Sunday afternoon film. Good shots of the Liverpool I knew in the fifties, including the staff entrance of George Henry Lee's where I worked in 1969. The cast was brilliant and were, as we have all got used to now as far as accents are concerned, doing Northern accents. The boy got a grant after passing a scholarship to a grammar school ( as I did in 1960, but my Dad's Union paid my uniform grant then). Like a lot of my friends , I left at 16 to work in a shipping office, then abroad, then got married young, then studied for a degree, and then a PHd after having three kids. Now in the week when my oldest friend from the city centre has died, I am nostalgic. Thanks for uploading this.
+Patty O'Boyle You should be exhausted !! All of that study, and kids ? If you married young, you should have let your husband support you that is the least he could do. Just the 3 kids, can kill you. At 16 I was swinging at the Hollywood Palladium, dancing the night away, with Harry James at the bandstand. I met his wife, Betty Grable. See what you missed? : -)
surprisingly weird how really wonderful some of these comments are, at least to me; often seems to reflect breadth of depth of the film, and for sure, the people who watch em, and bother to comment, like you, quite possible you may run into your buddy again, in the next world if there is one, and of course here, in your memory... either way, all best man...
I still have some things I bought from G.H. Lee in the '70s, including a still-unworn overcoat. Liverpool has lost so many shops and stores (it once had two Austin Reed outlets) that the city-centre is just another shopping-desert.
Great movie. thanks for posting! I am in the USA, but had several colleagues in our LIverpool branch office, and even over here across the pond, I notice that no one had a Liverpool accent. LOL, but that did not really detract from a very taut, well acted melodrama. Great photography too!

I know, it mainly took place in the '30,s but the conditions were worse then
@@michaelwertzy9808 I've seen those slums close up, from shortly after this picture was made: a lot of those old properties were life-expired and poorly-maintained by their rentier owners: the houses had thin walls and leaky roofs and inadequate plumbing and -sewers; electricity was an afterthought (some still had gas for lighting).
I neglected to add, I am an American.
A great little film and a precursor of the 'kitchen sink' dramas of the 50s/60s. The prison cell scene was very touching.
Thank you so much for posting this. It was pure joy as always to see the wonderful Kathleen Harrison and a very handsome young Richard Burton.
You are welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Most realistic movie which proves that life is the best ! A great experience in the end no one can say they made no mistakes!
Excellent, very touching, Fate can play a prominent Roll in One's Life , Really
Wow , what a great movie. Thx👍
This movie is kind of a classic. It's easy to watch it more than once.
I found it very hard to watch as times were hard as life and family dynamics are so different from today. Very touching film.
Definitely, especially with a young Richard Burton in it
@@TheSuperHarrygeorge I found it very hard to watch because that little girl's voice grated so, and the accents were terrible.
Thankyou so much for posting that, beautiful film. Rank films seldom disappoint.
Beautiful film!!!!!!
fabulous movie and great acting - thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for watching. Glad, you enjoyed the movie
robert newton at 38 mins at the piano...pure class, side splitting....thanks for post
We really enjoyed watching this film , my hubby remembers his dad singing those songs as he’s from the waterfront .many thanks for posting.
I love these British movies. Thanks from USA.
Very enjoyable film , fine acting and good story line . Thank. you for uploading.
Thank you for watching.the movie.! Glad you enjoyed.
Thank you Dave . Film was almost clear enough to see the Smog ? What a Great upload ,I really enjoyed this movie . I might watch it again .
Thank you very much for uploading this movie. It is quite a multifaceted tear jerker of a story. I am surprised that Avis Scott wasn't credited with the lead which was given to the actor portraying the father who, in my view is a secondary antagonist character. She went on to a long career. Thanks again!
You are most welcome. Glad you enjoyed the film.
Thank you I enjoyed it .
I think that last scene where they parted was suppose to.be Manchester where the boat had been diverted to, but it looked like liverpool.with the overhead railway ???.
I love the black and white old films thank you again for uploading it
Beautiful film. Thank you so much for sharing it. It’s a good reminder of decency and the importance of personal values. XK
A real diamond in the rough this one.
A hard, gritty look at life in Liverpool during peak unemployment. Not much of a role for Burton, but Newton & Harrison- great acting! TY.
Love the old black and whites. Movie was somewhat documentary, good long shots of the docks and surrounding districts and some social commentary on the time. Thank you so much.
Really Enjoyed,Fab Cast Thanks.
Every time i look at these classic films remind me of my grandparents
Bless.
"I, know what you mean. A hard life them back then.
Thank you for the added info.
I enjoyed the still photos on IMDB.
Always welcome! Thankful to have these to watch.
Culture has changed too much. Love the family values.
God bless you Sir.
I still have some things I bought from G.H. Lee in the '70s, including a still-unworn overcoat. Liverpool has lost so many shops and stores (it once had two Austin Reed outlets) that the city-centre is just another shopping-desert.
I do not appreciate the criticism, you did not have to watch it- but it's a true picture of a time gone, I really like that.
Great movie. thanks for posting! I am in the USA, but had several colleagues in our LIverpool branch office, and even over here across the pond, I notice that no one had a Liverpool accent. LOL, but that did not really detract from a very taut, well acted melodrama. Great photography too!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed.
Loved the shots of GH Lees, and of Owen Owens. Liverpool as I remember from the 60’s.
my grandmother born here in 1906,same day as the SF earthquake.
similar to cork, ireland where i lived in mid 1960s.
great people,beautiful land,,,,
peace to all peoples.
