  • It’s the beginning of winter and we have to open up trails on the frozen lakes. Follow us along our work and learn about how we think about ice safety, ice thickness and the essential gear that keeps us safe.
Venturing onto ice is a task that demands respect and knowledge. It's crucial to recognize the strength and behavior of ice to ensure safe passage. You also need to know how you check the ice. Finally, you need to know what to do if your friend is going through the ice.
The situation on a frozen lake can change from a nice Sunday walk into a fight for your life in a second. One mistake and you end up in the cold water. Then you must know how to get out of the water. After that, you are wet and cold. If you manage to come out of the water it can quickly be a dangerous survival situation where you can get hypothermia.
Our advice to you is clear. Don’t do this at home if you don't have the knowledge and the right gear!
Stay safe and see you in the next video.

Except for making videos we also run a small company called JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA and a kennel called WORKING HUSKY KENNEL. We offer guided outdoor tours in Swedish Lapland all around the year. During the winter we mostly do sled dog tours and in the summertime, it’s hiking tours, wildlife safaris, canoe, and packraft trips. Good advice. I lived in Alaska and flew my Cub on skis off lakes and ran snowmobile on lake. Now living in Wyoming. I ice fish and do some skating. Always have ice picks around neck and ice pick ski pole when skating to check ice.

Good video on ice. We have lots of small creeks here, they eat out the ice from underneath close to shore.
looks ok on top but not really.

I went thru early ice about 10 years ago. Good ice in the morning, same path in returning in the afternoon & ice had weakened.

That’s really dangerous. Was this in the end of the season? In northern Sweden we got that kind of situation during late spring. Just before the ice break up.
It’s good that you are still alive!

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Ice had just capped over maybe two days, 25-30 cm of good ice when I checked in the morning. I must have hit a area with a spring coming back in. I fished the same area two days later and ice was 50 cm.
I love ice fishing and will always push to get out early in the season.

Thanks from Finland for this. As a German it feels nice to get some information in English about similar environments! And I've been looking for an easy to carry ice-pick for a while. But your link directs to a camera. Would you mind sharing the brand you use there?

Step #! - Once I opened website that converts centimeters to inches I understood how thick the ice should be.
It never occured to me that there are safety designed throw ropes. Have you or Stina ever had to throw the safety rope to the other? Have you ever had to throw a safety rope to a guest while on a tour?
Love the drone overhead footage in all your videos.
Thanks, Matti, for showing Meee those safety ice picks you have around your neck.
Have you noticed how many people & how many records have been broken by other when skiing across ice as they head toward the South Pole, this year?
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

      Hello!
We have never used the throwing lines for bringing people out of water except for training situations. But the throwing lines are also very handsome as drying lines for wet clothes.
      😀
I haven’t looked into South Pole skiers so I didn’t know about all the records. Interesting.

Thank you. Really useful video, falling through ice scares me! Have you ever fallen through and self rescued using the ice claws? I should do a training, but as you say, not a nice thing to do.🥶 Great channel.

    • @JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA

I have never falling through the ice and using the ice claw in a real situation.
I have been on ice that breaks on shallow rivers or falling in to cracks between the ice and riverbanks. Until today it has never ended up in a really bad situation. …but that’s scary enough for me. 😀
