Billy wrote this to honor his friends that went to Viet Nam. He stills plays it in concert and has veterans on stage to sing the chorus of we will all go down together. It’s very moving. Thank you for realizing not all of us in America enjoy fighting with others. Namaste.

Such an incredibly deep, moving song for those of us who lost good friends in that mess...friends who had no choice but to go, and later come home in a box. And for what? Thank you for reacting to this song.

As a single soul in this world I do think most of the human race wants to live in peace and harmony and not as some piece on a chess board. Politicians plays the fiddle and the world has to dance. It has always been so throughout mankind. Thank you for posting and your honest reaction.

Love your reaction. I will just say that nobody wants the cops until you need them. We stick our noses into things that we should not sometimes. Yes. But we have also done lots of good stuff. My dad was sent to Korea when he was a teen, but he looked like he was 10 when he was forced to go fight. Breaks my heart. Every government is so corrupt. Always a hidden agenda.

I haven’t heard this song in a long, long time. Thank you for reacting to it.
The anti-war movement here in America has been so successfully suppressed by propaganda, widening economic despair, and techno-social degradation; we are as most falling empires - a lost populace subject to psychopathic political elites and their billionaire masters.
The hatred you speak about is manufactured constantly. The political propaganda has turned not just neighbor against neighbor, but brother against brother, and mother against son.
Thank you for your honest reactions.

I’m nearing seventy years old, and I have never understood my country’s thirst for war. For the majority of my life, we have been fighting somewhere in the world. Thank you for your honest reactions.

@@allanjones1680 That may be one of the most offensive things I've ever read. Maybe get off the computer and focus on doing something positive with your life. He has every bit as much of a right to an opinion as you. You don't know nearly as much about the world as you think.

This song was written by Billy Joel after he listened to veterans and their stories. They were friends and others he met talking about the years it took to get acceptance back in society. He didn’t go himself. If you want more good songs to listen to, just start with the album Cold Spring Harbour and play each and every song through to River of Dreams 12 albums later. You have done a few already. It was easy to tell the mental image this song gave you was uncomfortable as it was intended, doesn’t glorify war,and when you see Billy Joel live he plays this every time and uses veterans to sing the chorus. It is quite a haunting experience live!

Vietnam war was hell. Every soldier left with scars, most unseen.
