  • Last time on the Trainer, we went over the first five modes of Global OBD II. We learned that there are a total of ten modes available to any technician that owns even the most inexpensive Global OBD II-capable tool. Each of these modes provides a resource that can help us troubleshoot and repair the Diagnostic Trouble Codes related to emissions - that is, most of the powertrain codes.
    We also learned that the first five modes are, for the most part, ones you are used to using every day. Mode $03 for learning why the Check Engine light is illuminated, Mode $02 to see the stored Freeze Frame data related to the DTC that caused the light to come on, Mode $01 to view relative current data and finally, Mode $04 to turn the light off and clear the code(s) when we’re all done with our repair.
    We’ll take a look at Modes $06 through $0A (that’s Mode 10 in computer talk), providing you an overview of what each mode does and it’s use as a diagnostic aid. You’ll learn about TIDs, CIDs and MIDs, how to make sure your customer didn’t install a used ECM without telling you, and show you that some DTCs can’t be erased no matter how hard you try.
    All this, and a bit more, in the March edition of “The Trainer”.

    Recently bought and enhanced scan tool for $200. Most I could afford, to spend on one.
    Still learning how to use it. Thanks for teaching me more!

    Just ran across these video . Wow , great info on the modes that i didn't even know . One question i have is, When did they change to CAN ? What year. I got a 99 car and a 07 suv.

    • @MotorAgeMagazine
      @MotorAgeMagazine  Рік тому

      It was mandatory beginning with the 2008 model year, but started on some makes as early as 2004 I believe. Go to mode $06 on your scan tool. If you have the A-series tests, it's CAN.

    I HAVE A 2014 LANDROVER LR4 WITH OBD MONITOR CAT NOT COMPLETE. ON MODE 6 , NONE OF THE SENSORS IS FAIL AND NONE OF THE SENSORS CLOSED TO THE BORDER THAT WILL FAIL. I DROVE 1100 MILES SO FAR. ANY SUGGESTION

    • @MotorAgeMagazine
      @MotorAgeMagazine  Рік тому

      Are all of the enabling criteria met to run the monitor? For example, many vehicles have to be within a certain temperature range and altitude. Typically, the fuel tank has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. There are others as well. Also, are there any codes set or pending?

    • @ashleygates1235
      @ashleygates1235 Рік тому

      @@MotorAgeMagazine YES. EVERY WEEK I FILLED GAS TANK 3/4. I DROVE 5 WEEKS WITH TOTAL OF 1322 MILES. I DROVE FREEWAY AND STREETS. I DROVE FROM SAN DIEGO TO LAS VEGAS.NO CODES. MODE 6 INDICATE ALL SENSOR ARE NOT CLOSE TO THE FAIL BORDER. ALL INDICATE OK.
