  • Welcome to the last and final day of trail. I have landed in Utah where I will be starting the next season of my life. Sad to not be in California for the time being but loads of new hiking plus snowboarding in my future. I also got to pick up my dog! I missed him so much on trail and he missed me! Thank you for everyone’s countless amount of support! We both thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Enjoy!!!

Gadget I have followed you from your first day on the trail. I am very happy you completed the trail and are now home with your Pup. I know you are happy to be back with him and he is even more over joyed that you are back. Think of how he must have felt you left him in a strange place and have been gone for 6 months. Him seeing you again was awesome.
Take each day one at a time. You will get back to life. Just don't for get to go to the mountains take Theo with you he may enjoy the hike. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

First off I love your pup. He was definitely overjoyed to see you and I know from experience how that can feel. Sorry you are experiencing the post trail blues that so many do. The trail is a simple life with minimal decisions or options and adjusting to off trail is stressful and exiguous. You will get more at easy but you will miss the trail & your Tramily so you might give them a call they probably would enjoy hearing your voice. If clean sleep in your same clothes you did on trail and go go bed at the same time you did on trail for awhile. Gadget you hiked close to 2200 miles … you will get through this time period. Love you 😘❤

Glad you made it home safe and sound. I can't imagine how happy your pup was to see you. The interesting thing about dogs, they have no concept of time when it comes to people they love. Hope you get to ease back into non-trail life. Thanks again for sharing your adventure with us.

It will be a hard transition, but you'll do ok. If you need to go for a hike, just head to the mountains for a little. Get some good rest. Your dog is so sweet. Safe travels.

Gadget, why can I picture you walking to and walking thru the car wash with your pack? That is what popped into my mind when you said you would rather walk.
Melissa, your life has changed, and it will never be the same. Before my first hike I was a total adrenaline junkie, and I didn't do anything unless I was on the edge. I had a little trouble adjusting to the real world when I came back just like you are. Suddenly I was calm, calculated and realized that there are no longer big, huge problems to overcome, just small little quiet ones that were solved with minimal thinking. Realize what you have learned this summer and how monumental your accomplishment is, and you will never have big problems again. Other problems will crop up, but they will be weird, easy, but weird. When you are trying to explain what the trail was like or what each day was like to your friends and family but all they understand is you were out in the sunshine walking on this beautiful flat, groomed trail through the woods but you're explaining Wildcat. I had become depressed because no one understood..............trust me, they never will. Only another hiker understands. When that happens, and it will, call Sass or Soap. Just carry on a normal conversation with them and in just 10 minutes your world will be so familiar and all sunshine. You will think of the trail EVERY DAY! It will never leave you...........and that's a good thing!
I hope that you live a wonderful and happy life, and the trail will assure that you do.
Hike safe, Hike strong, Have fun!

Utah? I would love the back story to how you got there from Southern California. I bet there's culture shock not only from your finished hike but to how different life is in Utah from California. I am really enjoying these aftermath Vlogs.
i was wondering, when you first got to Utah I could have sworn that the woman on the left of the 3 was Just Hikes who did the trail in '23, but then I remembered she was from Georgia or Tennessee so I realized it couldn't be her.

Why did I think you were from California? I have no idea. But welcome home to Utah! Just like on the trail, you will adapt to handle life's problems. You did it when you were falling apart in New Hampshire and you'll do it again in Utah. I have confidence in your ability to adapt and thrive. Best wishes to you!

The transition from thru hike back to "normal" life has a lot of the same effects of the culture shock from moving to a new country, coming back from deployment, etc.. In this case, a lot of folks find that going camping/hiking/backpacking on the weekends, to help ease that transition. But the struggle is real.

What a 'cool' dog, and so happy to see you. Here are a couple of quotes I want to share: 1). "What must we have done in the distant past to deserve dogs? There is a certain 'magic' they bring into our lives which can be had in no other way - they truly are a gift for which we have no complete explanation."(Unknown); 2). "When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound, in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief; I come into the presence of still water and I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time, I rest in the grace of the world, and am free."(Wendell Berry). Be well, stay safe. 🥾
