OK, so you've watched the gearbox and transfer come out of Si's HJ61 in part 1, so this is the crucial part. The rebuild!
But this clip isn't just for people who intend doing their own rebuild. It's also immensely useful for anyone wanting an intimate understanding of what's actually going on when you shift those sticks - be it the little one or the big one!
If you know what's at the end, what's going on, then you'll understand how it should be done. This clip could save you from ever having to do this job!
Richard's done this build more than once as you can see. He's also done gearbox work on a lot of other types of vehicles which means there's plenty of cross reference information in here too. Basically, as Rich says, the Toyota LandCruiser gearbox and transfer is reasonably simple and exceptionally strong.
What pt2 constantly references is how well this box lasted considering. Simon bought the 60 Series with 300,000km on it and drove it home from Port Lincoln in South Australia with it already making noises. It continued to make noises for the next 350,000Kms until getting so bad it had to be pulled out for a rebuild.
Obviously, as we found cheap Taiwanese bearings in there, it'd been rebuild before Si bought it and not very well.
Yet he managed to squeeze and additional 300K merely by servicing it regularly and using Penrite oil. If you've ever wondered what the real difference between oils is - and why you pay more for quality Australian Penrite - here it is.
Then there's the sheer quality and comprehensive nature of the Terrain Tamer Gearbox and Transfer Case rebuild kit. Their fifty years in parts sourcing and selection means ALL the bearings are the best available, Japanese quality being best right now, and the gaskets, seals and hard parts all fit. I kept Milo going for over 1,000,000kms using these two Australian companies - Terrain Tamer and Penrite oil. I know I harp on about it but good oil and good parts is the key to longevity and reliability in the toughest off-roading terrain in the world.
Right, don't rebuild your gearbox or transfer without watching this clip closely for all the tips. And yes, we did have a few beers when she was in and running!

Watching a box being rebuilt is better than scented candles and relaxing music. Great video Roothy! Love it.

Good man for using grease as a sealant. I've seen boxes put together by people who seem to have gotten a truck load of silicone sealer for Christmas.

Little tip for anyone building that gearbox. That Syncro assembly with reverse is about 500 bucks. The syncro rings get metal from reverse gear clash embedded in them.. Dig it out gently and they are often good to reuse. The metal flakes make the syncro ring slip and appear to be worn and not working properly. Clean it up and they work again for years..

Hello, I have a Fj60 from 1983, it comes with a 4th gearbox, I have seen a Toyota 14B turbo engine, I would like to know if the 5th gearbox of this engine is compatible with the transfer of my FJ60, or in any case which ones are compatible

OK, not5 sure - I swapped in a 13BT turbo but used the old 4 speed bellhousing and transfer - ask the Mr Landcrsuier boys, and speak to Richard. Good luck! Excellent motor the 14BT

I get stuck in 4x4 and have punch the transfr stick hard to get it out. I asume that there is something standard to replace but don´t know what, can you help me with that?

At 50 seconds you are installing the 3rd gear: At 2:30 you are showing the hub of 1st and 2nd gears. The 4th is one-to-one so it is at the beginning of the out-put-shaft which locks in with the input shaft. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Think your right , I just had my H55F apart , surprised how big the diameters of the 1st and 2nd gear synchro rings are . Had no syncromesh issues so I wasn't too worried about them , but yeah much different design to the 3rd/4th synchro assemblies which look more conventional.

They are awesome trucks..look hard you may be lucky. I had two and the roof blew off one it was so rusty around the gutter haha. That's a true story. They have three layers of panel and it's a condensation trap with a hood liner. Becareful with buying a 2h one, they are great motors but have a few problems. Oil pressure relief valve wears and you need to have a sleeve put in the timing case. The head cracks around the pre ignition chamber . I know every motor has some issues. Just do your research. Hope you find one

Also the idler shaft retainer on the outside of the transfer case, keep an eye on the condition of that. Mine snapped off on me old hj61 on the tracks and the shaft popped a little way out. Was downhill from there 👎🏻😢
