Hi, I'm Josh with Best Tax Pro, and today I'm here to guide you through the process of settling for less with the IRS or setting up a payment plan. Many people reach out to me with these goals, and I'm here to explain how we can achieve them together.
Key Points to Consider Before Settling with the IRS:
No Bankruptcy: The IRS needs to confirm that you are not currently undergoing bankruptcy.
No Active Audit: To the best of your knowledge, you should not be under audit by the IRS.
Current on Taxes: You must be current on your taxes, which means having filed your most recent six years of tax returns. For the calendar year 2024, this includes the years 2018 through 2023.
    How I Can Help:
If you haven't filed these years, don't worry-we can handle it for you. The first step is for me to ask about the last year you filed. If you can't remember, that's perfectly fine. I will then ask for your phone number to send you a text with links for you to electronically sign an engagement agreement. This agreement allows me to prepare your tax return based on the information you provide or what I can obtain from the IRS with your permission.
    Information Collection:
Next, I'll collect some essential information from you, including your name, social security number, date of birth, and address details. With this information, I can prepare a power of attorney, which you can sign electronically. This document allows the IRS to discuss your tax matters with me. Setting up this electronic portal may take about two weeks, but using a wet ink signature can expedite the process.
    Importance of a Dark Signature:
Using a dark pen, such as a felt-tip pen, an ultra-fine point Sharpie, or a fountain pen, is crucial. This ensures that your signature is clear when faxed to the IRS, preventing any issues with image degradation that could delay the process.
Power of Attorney and Tax Document Preparation:
Once the power of attorney is in place, I can obtain all necessary tax documents from the IRS to prepare your tax return. I'll send you the results through the same electronic portal, along with an invoice. Payment can be made via Zelle, a fee-free option for most major banks, or through Square, which incurs a 3% fee.
Standard Fee Schedule and Reconstructing Expenses:
I have a standard fee schedule that I review with every client. For self-employed individuals, I offer the option of reconstructing expenses, which can significantly reduce your tax liability. This method can save you tens of thousands of dollars in taxes. However, if you're primarily focused on settling with the IRS based on what you can afford to pay, I respect that and do not pressure anyone to reconstruct expenses.
