Me too man. If there is a way to run those cars again, NASCAR needs to do it. It might have been because I was 8-13 years old back then, but the races were so much better.
@@jayrichards360 I think they just look so natural tho and they honestly look much more cool than the newer gen 5 and on.. Judson O'Neil For a while there, I really thought Harvick would’ve been the worse out of the young guns of the late 90s and early 2000s (Busch, Harvick, Johnson, Junior, Kenseth, Newman, Stewart) because everyone I mentioned except Harvick finished top 10 in points from 02-04 and Busch, Johnson, Kenseth, Newman, and Stewart made the Chase in 05.
You should do Good Seasons: Matt Kenseth 2013. Also, the fact Newman just went downhill in such and awful way is insane. From championship contender to field filler.
Even in the few seasons after 2003, he was a solid driver with Penske, SHR and RCR. Overall a very good consistent driver over the course of his career.
What In Carnation? Not really a field filler. He still get several top 10s and - up until this year - top 5s. Hell, he got 7 top 5s last year. Not exactly field-filler status, and even this year, where Chevy has taken a nose dive, he still got 8 top 10s as of now
The cars Penske ran were setup for qualifying, and out in clean air the cars were amazing. But like a lot of teams in the 2000's, they got back in traffic or behind lapped cars. They couldn't do much at all. Feast or famine type luck is what they had in 03
And funny thing about Matt Kenseth, he had 4 poles between 1998-2010 (full time cup ride started in 2000). And won many times from 20th or worse. Kenseth always had race day setups in his cars. And always lacked in qualifying, but when that green flag flew. He was coming through the field. Along with the help from The Killer Bees
Newman had almost a season where had as almost as many poles as he had wins and 7 DNFs. That's like getting A's on your tests but failing your class . Nonetheless, he was the next big thing for a while and a lot of people were proclaiming them geniuses for their pit strategy and fuel mileage victories which worked but several rules such as no pitting after getting the lucky dog(exploited at Dover in the fall, Newman came in for fuel and tires), and different tyres kind of ended their run. You have to give them credit for trying that gray area, 2003 more than any other year really highlighted the pit crews and the whole race team and the team that had the best pit crew in 2002, Matt Kenseth's 17 team won the championship. But that's what made the Winston Cup championship rewarding no matter who won it, it was from the top-down effort to win a championship.
Safety is very important but NASCAR has taken true race excitement and turned it into a whimp sport. I'd take the days of Allison Bobby and Davey, D. Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, Earnhardt Sr, Bonnet, Tim Richmond, Bodine, Alan Kowicki. Those were the days.
Yeah, they are highly focused on the aero side of things rather than close racing. Sure they claim the 'aero package' makes for closer racing, but close 'racing' isnt the same as closely driving next to eachother. Racing means you can still advance position, most tracks if you quality there you stay there now, except during pit stops or a rare caution to shuffle things up.

That year had one helluva battle between Him and Jimmie. Crazy how his career went so downhill. Haven't watched it yet but I know it will be good as usual! Update: I was correct.
Running's Racing 2002 was the battle. Newman had 8 wins in 2003 but he had so many DNFs. Johnson on the other hand won 3 races but he was far more consistent and finished 2nd in 03.
This season had huge implications on the sport. At the time it seemed like every one of Newman's wins that year were from stretching fuel and not taking tires. It directly led to not just rule changes, but tire changes as well.
Awesome video! It was a fantastic year for Newman! Many people don’t really remember just how memorable that season was for him. Great qualifying efforts and 8 WINS! But along with that success, he did fail spectacularly that year with some insane wrecks at Daytona and Talladega, not to mention the wild oil fire at Michigan. 2003 was a very interesting season for not just Ryan Newman, but for NASCAR itself.
That part-time 2001 run was pretty much what made me a Newman fan. From _dominating_ the Winston Open before his engine blew with 2 laps to go, to winning the pole for the Coke 600 a week later, and then top-5 finishes in Michigan & Kansas; hell of a run for just 7 races.
When Bud Pole Qualifying was an event worth watching, thanks to Newman. Shall be noted until his Brickyard win, half of his career wins were from 2003.
Aug 28, 2018 yet later at the 2020 Daytona 500 he suffered a head injury... feels very good to look back at a good season and forget the pain ever happened.
As someone who grew up being a Ryan Newman fan from his 1st race of his Rookie year, i cant tell you how fucking awesome it was to watch him win 8 races that season, as an 11 year old. i even got to watch him win at Texas. it sure was a great time to be a Ryan Newman fan
@@X2Lazy2WinX He showed that consistency is key. Just like the original rules that were drawn up. He defied the odds and was less than one second away from being the champion.

If he could knock Sorenson out of the way to make the chase he should have done the same to Harvick. But then he wouldn't have won the championship without wining a race because he would have won at Homestead.
@@shockwave315 yeahh, but... Matt Crafton's most recent championship run is the perfect example of a winless playoff champion, and to be always consistent. Ryan Newman technically had to get 1st place especially in the final run, hoping to take advantage of something that unfortunately did not happen (to see Harvick having problems).
As a fan of his since childhood, it’s so hard to deal with the lack of wins, but boy are those wins special. Also I love how he almost finessed consistency all the way to a championship in 2014. Oh so heartbreaking for me to watch😂
Equipment and Engineering issues have plagued RCR and Roush for years now. I'd say given the cars Ryan is driving pretty damn consistently. He rarely if ever doesn't make the "Chase". I think Newman is a throwback who could race and be successful in any decade in NASCAR.
That 2003 Dover race was impressive. He went 104 laps on fuel and tires. You can’t do that today. I think Jaime McMurray went 100 laps a few years later in that CoT car

amazing to think half of his wins came in roughly the first four or so years of his career in cup. (most being in this season) I wonder where that magic went for his other seasons at Penske

Most people don't want a driver with 7 DNFs winning the championship. Most people don't want a driver with 1 victory winning the championship which is what really gave the playoff movement momentum. And I suspect a playoff was something Nextel/Sprint asked for when they agreed to replace Winston.

This was a case of a bad season gone good! At Richmond, 11 races into the year, Newman was 27th in the points with 4 DNFs and other bad luck. From there, he managed to tickle the top 5 in points before settling to 6th after being caught up in that early Homestead wreck. I will say, Newman in 2003 was like Geoff Bodine in 1994, only Bodine blew up his engine a lot more.
I think I know now why Ryan Newman won Rookie of the Year in 2002 over Jimmie Johnson. Newman's 2002 stats: 1 win, 14 top 5s, 22 top 10s, 6 poles, 6th in points. Johnson's 2002 stats: 3 wins, 6 top 5s, 21 top 10s, 4 poles, 5th in points. So although Jimmie had two more wins than Ryan, Ryan had eight more top five finishes, one more top ten finish, and two more poles than Jimmie, since only the 17 best finishes are counted.
Holy crap I never knew he had 8 wins in a single season. Perhaps if it wasn't for those two bad wrecks at Daytona and Talladega, he might have won the championship
A lot of the wins he had in 2003 was on fuel mileage and it was always thought they were hiding fuel in the car. For example he was 12 laps short at the fall Dover race and stretched the fuel and won hard to make up 12 laps of fuel
Good Seasons: Darrell Waltrip 1983 Good Seasons: Bill Elliott 1985 Good Seasons: Davey Allison 1991/1992 (both seasons he scored the same amount of wins, which was 5) Good Seasons: Rusty Wallace 1993 Good Seasons: Dale Earnhardt 1995 Good Seasons: Jeff Burton 2000 Good Seasons: Greg Biffle 2005

Ryan's biggest issue in his prime years was that he just didn't have consistent equipment. If he had been moved to the #2 when Rusty retired or left for Roush in like a trade with Kurt he coulda done a lot better. The #12 was a solid mid level car but not an all time great by any stretch. Besides Daytona (right spot, right time,) he didn't do much after 2003 at Penske. He had some badass paint schemes though.. it's very easy but also very true to say that Tony saved him in 2009 by giving him a ride. If Ryan had a little more luck and had been discovered by Rousch or Hendrick he coulda been an all time great, still very solid but he had the smarts on cars and fierce will to be an all timer. If he had been in Kurt Busch's ride or Jimmie's ride he woulda won quite a few titles.

I bet people back in 2003 thought that Newman would be the next big thing. As we found out he wasn't, but still he's had a solid career.

I love this gen 4 nascar
Holy crap I never knew he had 8 wins in a single season. Perhaps if it wasn't for those two bad wrecks at Daytona and Talladega, he might have won the championship
Good Seasons: Tony Stewart 2000, Carl Edwards 2008
Championship Season: Martin Truex Jr. 2017
A lot of the wins he had in 2003 was on fuel mileage and it was always thought they were hiding fuel in the car. For example he was 12 laps short at the fall Dover race and stretched the fuel and won hard to make up 12 laps of fuel
What track is shown in the beginning? I should know it but I just can’t think of it.
Dover.
cctitansfan thank you

Matt Kenseth 2013 plz. That would be awesome.
Could you do gone to soon:Casey Elliot
Still want the bad seasons:harvick 2009 video
You forgot to add that he had 11 poles in the 2003 season as well
Championship Seasons: Kevin Harvick 2014
Good Seasons: Mark Martin 1990
Rookie Breakouts: Denny Hamlin 2006
First Wins: Brian Vickers 2006
Bad Seasons: Kurt Busch 2012
NASCAR Busts: Kevin Lepage
I'll never understand what happened to him ....he was so good early in his career
Ryan Newman was competitive every year he was with Penske.
2003 was my rookie season
Now I just wish Newman could find a ride...
People also know him as that one guy on American Pickers
This was they year of Newman’s tumble at Daytona He had a lot of poles
Half of his wins (9) came in his 1st 2 seasons before the Chase Era
Newman has had quite the odd career. The main things that come to mind for me about his career is... why was he so good at qualifying on the pole? And why is he always a magnet for spectacular wrecks?
