3 years later... lol I just purchased two in the orange delrin. I thought that if they are slippery when using I'll put a bit of gun grip tape on them and they should be perfect. I did this with one of my Bark River knives and I love it and love the look. Just thought I'd mention it as I haven't heard of anyone else doing this with their users lately. Thanks for the vid! Always appreciated.
I love it excellent job bud!!!!!! I can’t wait to see it when it’s done....... that wood is nice and soft wow looks like a joy to carve!!!!!!! Thanks bud
I love to whittle. Hell, I can entertain myself just by making shavings, lol. Just the act of working with wood is relaxing to me, and a great stress reliever! I should pick one of these up. I love my GEC's, but lately, I've pretty much been on a fixed blade binge. I need to get back to snagging traditional patterns again. I just love the beautiful cover materials you find on traditionals, yet seldom see on any modern folders.
Thanks Timbo! What I always look at first is "what covers" are on it..If you watch ApostleP, his main focus is the blades - It's just personal preference I guess. You need to get a little Traditional to carve with - I actually like to use my $28 vintage Camillus Barlow more than the $86 pocket carver! Go Figure! LOL 😂
I'm really happy the way it's turning out, as someone who can only draw stick people,😂 confidence in making any "art" has always been lacking! Pick up some Basswood blocks Tom! To tell the truth it's very relaxing (& kind of addicting), especially if you don't put yourself on any timetable. ✌️😁
LoL Ivancho! The cleft is roughed-in pretty good. When I start the detail work, I'll try to shape it better. If I think "butt crack" while detailing, it should come out perfect! 😆
Very neat looking whittling knife! I really like the muslin handle. And if you're not careful, cyclops kirk douglas is going to become your new channel mascot. Do NOT feed cyclops kirk douglas after dark. Or he may take over your house and ruin your life. lol Cheers, buddy.
Lol..When I was much, much younger, a movie came out called "Trilogy of Terror", the 3rd short film of the "Trilogy" starred a little antique wooden aborigine doll, spear & all, that came to life, terrorizing this poor woman in her home. lol..I can laugh now, but back then it was state of the art special effects! I remember having nightmares for days on end after watching that film🥺 By the way the other 2 "short films" of the trilogy were just as terrifying! lol✌️😂 ua-cam.com/video/nra7OmV1IzE/v-deo.html Happy Nightmares!!! Here I found the movie in it's entirety! from 1975, so I was 14yrs old when I first watched it.😲 ua-cam.com/video/BdSAzMWrtKM/v-deo.html
Hey Slick, what's weird about the shape & contour of the handle on the 62's (at least for me) is it feels odd, almost backwards when using for everyday carry. But when carving with it, The odd angles give leverage, making it feel very safe. Just a great knife for carving! Anything else, not so much.✌️😁
Good to see a knife (especially one made by GEC) being used for its intended purpose! Although you seem to have captured the likeness of an Easter Island mo-ai... What puzzles me just a little about this knife is that all three blades are wharncliffes, meaning that if you want any curve or belly (for a scooping cut, for example), you'll be looking in vain. Perhaps that's why it's called a carver, and not a whittler? Looks great in that Farm & Field trim!
You're right about that David! I think I'm going to need to scoop out the area around the eye to form a brow, so I may have to bring out a scout knife to use the awl or something like it, the carver does lack any ability to scoop. The Easter Island reference is spot on, thats the first thing that came to mind when I set the carving down on the counter top for the first time in it's present state. ✌️😁
@@Warthogg1 I'm a novice whittler - used the lockdowns here to carve spoons from wood I collected on naughty escapes to the forest. Although I have a couple of regular whittlers and they work well, I've been surprised to discover that the two secondary blades on a medium-sized Stockman work best, with the short spey's rounded tip being ideal for scoop cuts and the other for the straight stuff. Failing that, a small pen blade (like that on a half-whittler) is a good do-everything blade but you have to take more care with its point.
@@davids9549 Thanks for the tips! (no pun intended 😅) I'll give the small spey a try.. The Boker "Carver's Congress" has one that is intended for just that I think! ✌️😊
I was looking at getting this but what killed the deal was three wharncliffe blades! Had one of the wharncliffe blades been a pen blade I would've bought it right away. I wish the Carver had the blades of the Congress. I really like the bird's eye rivets! But lets get serious about carving! How is that knife at carving a bar of soap? Your little dude has a certain "tiki" feel to him. Excellent video my friend!
Thanks Tobias, I held off on buying one for just that same reason, why would you need 3 Wharncliff blades? But it makes sense as a carver, the 2 smaller blade edges are super thin & very sharp. I imagine they will get dull pretty fast if you were carving "real wood"😂. A dull blade is a dangerous blade when it comes to carving, the last thing you would want is for the blade to slip into your palm or fingers. I've tried some other knives I bought specifically to carve with & none performed as well as the Farm & Field. Although the Boker Carver's Congress did very well - It's something you might like! has 4 different blades & is stylish as hell @ $70...Olde Town Cutlery still has 2 left in stock. Thanks Chris - I feel a little bad, because I watched a bunch of his videos months ago & was inspired by them to give carving a try, but absolutely had a brain fart during my video, just couldn't remember his name. But Thanks Doug! if by some chance you see this video or read these comments. Take Care Chris!🙏✌️

A nice little knife. I have the 62 pocket Congress and I’m not too impressed, but I’ve a new TEW that might make a decent whittler.
