    I bought a wideout this year. I have 2 other straight blades. Never again will I buy a straight blade. The wideout is a must for open area plowing. I love ❤️ it. Even cleaning.up the ends of the driveways is better. The scoop helps so much. 10/10

    Used to plow commercially with a fisher ez-vee for about 10 years. Good mix of pavement and gravel driveways, 85 drives 2 roads about 4 miles total. Went through cutting edges pretty fast, had to do something. Had a metal shop make up new edges out of AR 400 steel and doubled my edge. I plowed commercially on those edges for another 8 years. Still have same edges now on same plow. 14 years on same edges.

    I have a 40 year old Meyer that came off a mid 70's Dodge Sno-Commander. Hydro pump belt drive, two yellow knobs on the dash, push-pull. Oh,its on an 84 F250 with a NP435 creeper gear 4 speed. Been great since 2002. Spend 8 hours in that plowing never ending MI lake effect and I bet you wouldnt mind the Western. also cutting edge wear is the result of improper initial set-up. Better luck 18/19 brother.

    What's so hard about their controller? It's the same controller on my Fisher XV2. I can run the controller and shift at the same time. Yes I plow with a 5 speed. It's the only way to plow.
    Scoop? Push the scoop button.
    Retract? Push the retract button.
    In V mode and want to wind row? First push of the either wing button is always forward.
    In scoop and want to wind row? Push that wing button twice.
    I've hung the damn controller on the mirror hanging upside down facing away and ran the controls while I plowed. What's so hard about buttons with the command written on them? Can't memorize a couple simple buttons or commands?

    good info Stanley. I have ran western straight plows a lot with the push button controls. They were fine. I see your point on the v plow button controller. That cutti g edge should not be a problem and the rep should have taken care of it. Did you forward this video to the rep?

    I have been using the MVP3 for 6 winters now in south central Alaska and have far more issues than you are having so wanted to post a comment from that commercial perspective in a place where plowing happens over 7 months a year. Quick background, this plow is mounted to a 2013 F350 Dually and maintains 14 acres of parking lots and a 2.5 mile two-lane road. Like you, my first cutting blades lasted one season and actually bit into the lower frame 1/16th of an inch before replacements were available. -I opted for the 5/8 fischer branded replacements and they have lasted 2 years each. The pivot bar has been replaced twice (not cheap), the pivot pin has broken once and the collar on the replacement pivot bars have both required welding 1/2" plate steel onto for more sheer strength, the T frame broke this year requiring reinforcement angle iron to be welded to either side for better strength, the pipe supports between the blade ribs have all been welded numerous times from hairline cracks, the shoe kits kept falling off so I no longer run them due to the repeat expense, and last on the major repair list is the frame mounts have required several welds on both sides at bolt locations.
    The more minor list includes the rubber buttons breaking off the controller which are now held down by a fabric tape so it can still be used, the location of the hydraulic fluid reservoir is ridiculous, shouldn't have to need an adjustable throat funnel to access it, the deflectors do not keep snow from going over the plow at any speed due to the steep angle of the cutting edge... -This geometry might work better if the trip springs weren't so weak, when they deflect they also collect snow above the cutting edge creating a 'memory' of that steeper angle, the cheap plastic headlights have both broken from wobbling back and forth constantly. -While most plow lights are fairly weak anyway, these are very dark regardless of bulb type and made worse by collecting moisture from always breaking it's seal. This plow would probably last a home-owner a lifetime of just plowing a driveway or two but from my experience of actually working this plow hard: it just can't be considered commercial quality.

    Hey Stan this is really late. But the cutting edge they put on that plow that the cutting edge was worn so severely was a low carbon steel blade and may have even been a thinner one at that . But I feel you should have seen that. Some how that regular steel blade was put on that plow

    Haven't tried em all, but I've had BOSS. Straight blades that, short of the occasional cylinder or hose or corroded wire issue , have been flawless for 15+ years, we keep the feet on and I've never even replaced a cutting edge, maybe twice after a real hard winter I've welded a crack that appeared but caused no failure- after those results I don't think I'll ever even try a different brand.

    Stanly, The pitch of the blade has a huge affect on how hard it cuts. Maybe you added weight after install? We run all the plows and the western controller is stellar. Very easy to operate. Western plow has stood strong over the competition. What Do I know sounds like your the expert

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  8 років тому

      d sarg- I have ran all types of V plows and just never had this same issue on anything else. But then to have it on 2 new blades? Both cutting edges crapped out in the first season. Thats just not ok. Douglas dynamics (Westerns) parent company needs to improve this for future customers.

  • @hudsonhawk0016
    @hudsonhawk0016 5 років тому

    The cutting edge wear issue may be due to Western using cheap or soft steel. Tire height is another factor in the bite angle of the plow. The old school Fisher speedcast plows didn't really have a cutting edge, only the trip edge that could be worn out in a season. The town highway department I worked for in my town would receive a new Fisher plow and immediately bolt a grader edge to it before putting it into service.

    Hey Stanley, love your channel and content!!!
    So l have Operated the V blade plus for 2yrs and it’s was ok but l found it to be small and can’t scoop up too much snow.
    I ended up with two 8-10 wideout plows sold one because l wasn’t yawing it and now l’m kicking myself because l need a second plow.
    To review the wideout l love it!!!
    I can push 8-10 feet of snow l can scoop the ends and don’t lose any snow so l don’t have to do the job twice
    The controller works awesome
    I have one bad thing to about the Western wideout it’s dam expensive!!!
    I’m up here in Canada 🇨🇦 and a new wideout is over $13K!!!!!!
    That hurts the 💵💵

    My friend has his 1995 plow still in service for personal and his business lot.
    I had a 2005 which I liked. It was 3 yrs old b4 showing wear. 4 yrs old b4 lights/plug in started being a problem. Other than that, no problems. My 2013 showed wear the first yr, the slow drop quit the 2nd yr, and plug in problems the 3rd.
    Quality definitely went down hill. The new plows idk, my 2013 is still in use.
    As far as controllers, I love mine. I can press one button on my western that would take pressing two buttons at the same time on a 2013 boss. Plus I got my mpv3 9'6" v put on the truck for $5,800. Dealer had a boss 9'2" v for $6,600 plus installation.

    I have been using western plows for going on 12 years now. 71/2 ft to a 8 ft proplus to a 8.5 ft MVP3.
    Bought the proplus and the MVP3 new and both times the cutting edge from the factory was junk and wore down too quick.
    Buying a thicker edge solves the problem.
    As for the controller for the MVP3, you need more time on it. one button to scoop mode, one button for V mode and the others are simple, up, down, right left.
    Love my western V plow and will never go back to a straight for the advantage it gives me.
    going on 4 years with it now and hasn't been in the shop yet for any issues, no bent frames, nothing.

    We run a Fisher V and it has the same controller (same parent company, Douglas Dynamics). I have to agree on the lack of usability in the remote. Apparently, when Douglas Dynamics bought Blizzard in 2005, they got the extendable blade patent and shared it across their products so you can get the same technology with slightly different tweaks from each company.

    Hey Stan, I have a new wide out on f350 diesel...same control...same dual action on the wings function... I thought I was just losing my edge... "getting old".. Lol...as far as cutting edges I would suggest getting meticulous in setting the plow shoes and making adjustments as needed to take some of the brunt directly of the cut edge... That being said I somehow lost a shoe last storm... Pin slipped or the thing just broke. Biggest advantage of wide out is 10 foot straight and scoop... Also retracted for travel... Great video... I had no idea v blade cutting edge replacement was so much$

    So I just did my first storm with my MVP3. I actually really like the controller, although I fall into "for the new texting generation" group. A quick tip about the wings (which is mostly moot, the scoop/vee buttons cover most of what's necessary) The wing will almost always move forward first, unless you pressed it already within about 30 (possibly more) seconds. So if you want it to move back like you're going from scoop to straight, quickly press it twice.

    Stan need your help real quick I'm new to this whole snow game. I'm only residential atm say I have a walk or even a two car driveway but there's already been traffic on it and it's interfering with my shovel or snow pusher. Will tossing some salt waiting a minute and going back at it again help loosen it up and easier on my back ?

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  8 років тому +1

      +Haddox Hardscapes & Landscaping Yes- hard pack(thats the technical term for snow that is driven over and turns to ice) requires salt to loosen up. Watch the SIMA video with Charles Glossop I made. Salt only functions at certain temperatures! If it gets to cold-salt stops melting ice and requires an additive to activate it. Crazy but true. Here is your solution for hardpack. Throw down Salt- wait at least 30 minutes-give it time and then plow. Try to do this during the warmest part of the day.

When we got our first Fisher XV's (basically same as the Western) they came with 3/8" cutting edges and they basically melted off in 4 storms of about 8 hours of plowing each storm. We too went back to the dealer, called Fisher directly (douglas dynamics) and was pretty much told too bad for you. I went back to the dealer, flipped out and the dealer stepped up and put 1/2" thick cutting edges on and problem solved. Now we get about 1.5 seasons on a set of edges. We average about 110-160 inches of snow a season so we're plowing a few times a week and the 1/2" thick edges seem to hold up well. You can even get a 5/8" edges but very pricey. We pay 380.00 for a new set of OEM edges installed, don't know where your coming up with 450.00

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  8 років тому

      We bumped up our second pair of cutting edges as well. Sounds like Douglas dynamics put the screws to you as well on their junk cutting edges. The heavier edges hold up much better but what a bad experience and customer service.

    • @davidg9167
      @davidg9167 7 років тому

      Stop buying OEM edges. If it snows in your area (obviously) than there are fabrication shops in your area that will make custom quality edges. DD plows come with 3/8" edges but you can bump it up to 1/2" or 5/8" when you buy the plow.

    • @jandblawncare8570
      @jandblawncare8570 7 років тому

      We have zero problems with the 1/2" edges. Local fab shops want the same as or more for their edges....Ill stick with my dealer who gets me in and out when it counts.

      @@davidg9167 i went to a local steel supplier and got a 6" piece of 1/2" ar400 steel for about $212. Then I bought a Bosch 1/2" cobalt drill bit, clamped my old edge to the new one and drilled my own holes on my drill press. You can also buy aftermarket ar400 edges that are pre drilled for your specific model of plow. They will hold up better than your average cutting edge.

    Had a 8'6" Hiniker V-plow on a Ram 2500 absolutely loved the controller, I didn't like the mount. That is one main area for improvement.
    Had a Boss 9'2" V- XT on a F-250 love the mount, didn't care for the construction of the blade or the controller.
    Also the Hiniker plow was heavier which worked better for back dragging.

      Also a heads up.... In some areas the Snow Ex brand has a different distributer than fisher/western and has 25% cheaper parts for some reason. @teckhardt127 8 років тому

    Western Plow Certified Tech Here. That adjustment you are talking about is called the "Configuration" of the plow. Unfortunately, whoever installed your plow should have double checked this configuration and did not. That being said, MVP plows are very hard to get a perfect configuration with, depending on the truck.
    There are four total bolts that can change the configuration of the plows. They are located by the foot stand. Loosen those four bolts, and then removed the two rear. Use a hand jack to jack front of plow into air until upper bolt holes line up. Then reinstall the bolts and tighten. That should take care of the problem.
    My opinion of Western as a company? Terrible quality control. I've installed about 20 plows this season and sometimes they give you MORE hardware than you need, and sometimes they short you. We've had multiple plows that had MISSING parts upon arrival.
    With all that, the "dealerships" that sell, repair, and install the plows are ultimately responsible for correct installation and repair.

    ive been running westerns since 08, ran an old 8.5 MVP on truck 1 from 08 to 14 and can honestly say i beat the life out of that plow and it kept kicking absolutely no complaints. in 13 we put a 8.5 MVP3 on our truck 2 and its been great. last spring i upgraded the MVP to a 9.5 MVP3 and got 2 storms in with it and it was great. ive been running western long enough to know that the adjustments need to be made on the A frame to maximize wear and tear. both trucks in the video look like they were not setup right from the dealer since the a frames did not look level the severely worn one did look worse. not to mention both of those plows cutting edges looked spent too. never seen that happen, we get at least 1 full season out of a cutting edge. i was not impressed with the Wideout BTW, i would stay away from it and go with the new snow ex line (old blizzard) the mounts are interchangeable with western just have to swap the ears out and the wiring is the same as long as you have fleet flex system. as far as the controller goes ive got well over 1000 hours with that controller and honestly dont have a single complaint. i dont mind how the independent wing function operates both directions. you will get used to it.

    thats odd, i have a western straight blade for six years and the cutting edge is mint, admittedly i don't do too much but ive got 17 driveways and 2 parking lots and the driveways are not small as i live in a rural area. I just watched another review of some guy who was praising the plow after 2 seasons for its controller

      It is weird because my western straight blade was great as well- this new MVP blade is Pile of Junk! Total garbage that shouldn't put on a blade.

    not saying Stans experience is not true, just saying im a first year plower, no experience ever before. brand new western plow with 7 commercial accounts and zero issues ZERO! no issue with this controller (and i totally suck at video games!!) and the cutting edge looks like the day i bought the plow.
