That was a great review. You should do more. It was clear, concise, and hit all the points that worked for me, so much so that I purchased the “light stand” for my trip to Alaska. Thanks for the review.
I have this too and like it. It should be mentioned that it’s only suitable for relatively light weight gear. Heavier stuff will collapse the telescoping sections. Thanks.
Thanks ED, that was pretty much all any one needs to know. I am planning to buy 2 of these to mount my lights on, but also to possibly double up as a light weight travel (tripod) for moto vlogging.
DUDE! I've been looking for a tripod like that for years! Long time Digital Nomad here... Been living the DN lifestyle since 2018 so congrats on being a new Nomad! I've been traveling the world with a huge Manfrotto tripod but 99% of the time, the product you just reviewed would have met my needs and I'm sure it's easier to pack and lighter! (2 big pluses for digital nomads!) Thanks for making this video... I'm glad UA-cam recommended it to me. I too have the DJI Pocket 3 and am planning on using it with the tripod as well.
Before I even start watching the video - I have to share that I travelled across Japan for almost 3 weeks with only Ulanzi MT-79 and it was absolutely AMAZING. I used it as a tripod, selfie stick, extended it to record video from height in crowds... served me so great! I've used it for iPhone 14 pro in Smallrig cage, which was always easy to attach and remove. Would definitely recommend this product to everyone who is looking for something light to travel with!
I have a shorter version. I also bought this and pulled it apart shortly. I had to return it. I don't have the problem with the shorter one. Also, it is easier to carry around collapsed. For using as a tripod, watch out it will tip over.
Excellent find! I've ordered one now too! I've been using an Amazon Basics tripod for the last year but it takes up a lot of space when i'm recording and it makes positioning camera to record my handheld gaming footage a real chore. I'll be able to use this not only for my mobile phone recording but also my new Insta 360 X4 recording and its a really long selfie stick too.
Great informative review - I wouldn't have guessed it was your first if you hadn't mentioned it. I just ordered two of these to use as portable stands for small LED lights. Thank you!
I picked one up a few months ago and I have to say, for so many needs this is a great option. I have it in my backpack for use whenever I need, with my DJI Pocket Osmo 3 or Theta Z1 for VR work... you can't beat the price and use cases, at least quick down and dirty shoots.
I use mine for the Osmo pocket 3 during sporting events, does extremely well! Just watch out for high winds if you have it up high, not the most stable for that 🤷♂️
I currently have the peak design with the kit that shortens the legs. I keep it in my car and use it for night photography . I have flown with it and several times I have almost had it taken from me by security agents. Thank you for bringing the MT-79 to my attention. I'm going to buy two of them.
just got one, pretty impressed with it! - I wouldn't trust it outside, but in controlled environments its such a compact option. Love having this in my kit. Thanks for recomending!
I use the ULANZI MT-34 which is 1/4 the price and even more compact & lightweight, albeit at a lesser max height. I only use my iPhone to take trave photos these days, though, no professional jobs. Since this is plastic, I'm allowed to carry it on board as part of my one-bagging kit.
You can add the ulanzi U-70 ballhead which is designed for vlogging and has a side attachment for microphones. It is a very convenient little ballhead and ideal for something like this.
Loved this video! I have a similar one but it was way cheaper. The material is not great but it does its purpose and it's lightweight. It is my travel go-to "tripod" and I highly recommend it. Never had any trouble getting it through museum's security. As long as it's inside the bag they don't care. Great video!
I have the ULANZI MT-44, very similar to what you are demonstrating here, except it has a ball-head too, which is very practical for reasons such as you explained. I needed something lightweight because I travel around with my gear by bike. I have more than six months of practical experience with it and in general I'm happy with the product. However there is one con that should be explained. The point of stabilization is at the base of the mast compared to most traditional tripods where it's at the base of the head. As a result a camera mounted to it, in my case the DJI Action 4, sways in the wind when using it outdoors, my main need. To compensate I often do not extend the last section near the top end, or sometimes last two sections if it's quite windy. If one needs full height then that becomes a factor in potentially having blurring media as it sways. I used it as a selfie stick for the first time about a week ago and it was great, easy to hold, and the light weight of it didn't cause my arm to get tired during a 5 minute video walk-and-talk recording. I suspect the sway effect would be even greater with a heavier device mounted to the head, something heavier than my DJI Action 4.
I was about to say the same. The biggest issue on uneven ground is that this could fall over if extended more than a foot or so. Definitely only useful indoors or in level paved areas.
Yep the MT-44 is great but it is too short in my opinion - only 109cm means it can never be at eye level if I'm standing up. If Ulanzi made a longer version it would be perfect. Good point regarding wind - I just got mine so haven't tested this. I did notice a difference in stability depending on which sections you extend, as you mentioned. I always try to use the thicker bottom sections and leave the thin top ones for last. That's the great thing about the MT-79 - I'm almost never using the full length so I can leave the thin sections closed and it's more solid. Thanks for your comment!
Thank you! I'll definitely be posting them here. First stop Australia (home), and then I'm mainly interested in Taiwan & Japan. Are/were you a digital nomad? Any suggestions?
That does look like a great travel solution. Not a substitute for a full-blown tripod for, say, landscape photography, but for travel / vlogging I think it looks great. Handy for occasional urban long exposures, such as light-trails, and time-lapses. 600g, which is a lot lighter than my Slik travel tripod and I love the compactness. Spec on the website says it has a load capacity of 1 kg. Really good point as well about the small footprint when used in the home studio.
I usually carry an umbrella for your "alternative" use of this "stick" here in the Philippines but have never had to use it as most Filipinos are friendly and helpful. You might consider this in your travels to SE Asia.
Hello! Just a random dude…. I came across this video, and it’s a shame you’re not sponsored by Ulanzi…. because I bought one after watching it, and it’s surprisingly very handy! It’s virtually what I’ve been after for my phone and DJI Pocket Osmo! So thank you
Very good review thanks. I think it would make more sense to have the adjustable ball mount at the base of the pole above the 3 legs so it could be set in a vertical axis on uneven ground 🤔.
Yeah I bought it for the DJI pocket III however I definitely would not recommend putting a full size full frame camera on there any height over like 3 ft it definitely gets wobbly probably won't fall but it definitely gets wobbly
I have both the mt-79 is nice for something like a action cam and if you put a bag on the bottom stable to maybe 1.5meters of the 2meters but with a base of 30cm vs 100cm of the peakdesign it should not even be compared how stable things are. A nice $29 product but anyone who would use it as a replacement tripod for a real cameras is asking for trouble. Now its a nice solution for some edge cases, table top, small actioncams on max 1.5meter height. small lights and indeed kind of a monopod/selfie stick it can find its place next to your real travel tripod.
I've used this tripod / stand for a few months, and the only con I found is you can't put too much weight on it or it starts to collapse on it's own. Besides that, it's been great as a travel, light weight stand for my 60w cob light with umbrella.
so i was at a camera shop and looking at stuff like this for my spotting scope but i was only looking at stuff with an ARCA rail. but i just got the DGI pocket 3 and its really good for traveling but its requirements wifi, blue tooth and location to pair the pocket 3 to your phone is a little annoying but for people who mostly to vlogs or close up photography i think you will be quite happy with the pocket 3.
On Ulanzis site it says the capacity is 1kg (2.2lbs), which isn't much compared to more serious tripods. It handles my Sony ZV-e10 easily and I still have to push down with some force to shorten it. So it's ok for most DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Of course, if you want to use those huge telescopic lenses for nature photography and various add-ons you will need a more serious tripod like the peak design or Ulanzi F38 which handles up to 18kg! www.ulanzi.com/collections/travel-tripods/products/ulanzi-f38-quick-release-travel-tripod-3131?aff=1553

Great review - almost a hack video of using something not exactly designed for something else...do you think it will stay stable even in windy situations or will it tip over without weights?
if you had a traditional 3 legged tripod, you could extend two of the legs down to the ground between the window & the table, & then have their third leg with a short extension onto the table. It would take up even less space on your table than your small red tripod, with your setup I think.
I reckon half a meter long selfie stick is better because it more stable when your arm is fully extended. Besides cp and action cam have wide field of view.
I want to use this with my osmo pocket three. However, i also want attach my light onto a cold shoe. Do you know a way to to have the osmo pocket attached alongside a light? Is there a type of extension for example that could attach onto the 1/4 inch screw before attaching the osmo and light? Thanks!
i would have loved to learn what the weight is - which is the biggest problem with most tripods. Do the extensions lock in some way, or do they hold up only by friction? What is the max rated load fully extended? Other than that: Big grin at the self defense idea.....
Only friction unfortunately! I would love if they locked but this would make it bulkier. The weight is 550g (1.2lb), recommended load is 1kg (2.2lbs). All specs listed on the Ulanzi site - www.ulanzi.com/products/ulanzi-mt-79-aluminum-alloy-light-stand-6-5-t075gbb1?aff=1553 I'll make sure to include stuff like weight tests in future reviews of other products. You asked for feedback, so here goes…
I’ve been a so-called ‘digital nomad’ for over 7 years now. When I see a review of an interesting product like this I want to know if it’s going to fit into my essentialist ‘carry-on only’ mode of transport - especially what length it folds down to (36.5cm) and how much it weighs (550g). I also want to know how much weight it can bear (1kg recommended) so I can determine if it can hold my camera. And finally, something about the stability when at full length with a camera mounted on top. I understand that it’s a lighting stand, which means stability is less important, but if we’re going to re-purpose it as a camera stand it would be good to know how it deals with a bit of wind when a camera is mounted on top, and whether I should even contemplate using it outdoors. Mounting it between the desk and the wall was a convincing solution to a common problem; in that application I’d like to know how long it would take for the wobble to settle after pressing a button on my camera, or whether I should be controlling the camera remotely. And finally, always talk to the lens not the display!
Good luck with your digital nomad ventures. Aim for carry-on travel, you’ll never go back after that…

I was curious about the weight of a camera you could use on this without it collapsing or falling over, i also like the comment about deterring potential aggressor’s, it certainly is not a daft remark, when travelling if you look like a victim your likely to become one.
well done mate. I enjoyed it.

Thank you for the video. Great reviews
i would have loved to learn what the weight is - which is the biggest problem with most tripods.
All specs listed on the Ulanzi site - www.ulanzi.com/products/ulanzi-mt-79-aluminum-alloy-light-stand-6-5-t075gbb1?aff=1553
I'll make sure to include stuff like weight tests in future reviews of other products. Thanks for the feedback!
