I couldn’t get over how good this was vs all of the GoPros we’ve used together over the years. I always held the GoPro as ‘top of the tree’ but the mount, sound quality and so far the reliability you’ve had from this takes the DJI to another level.
Yeah. It's a changing of the guard IMO. The reality is that both brands produce amazing kit. However, with a specific MTB viewpoint in mind, DJI does it for me.
i bought a used action 3 about 8 weeks ago. its my first time using action cameras. the quality is very good, my only issue is, i can not get even 2 hours worth of footage. i can only think i don't have the correct settings. keep up the great work. PS your a far better rider than you give yourself credit for.
Cheers David. Yeah, I have a 64gb SD card and it'll only get about 1hr 15mins of footage. 4K footage uses a lot of data! Thanks for the positive comment buddy 👍
Great video! I got this little beauty at the end of last year and am so happy with it. I got so sick of GoPro freezing up, Crap battery life, The touch screen was terribly slow to react. The OA4 is flawless and like you said switching between magnetic mounts is a joy! Thanks, All the best, Adrian

Great detailed review! One important feature GoPro with max lens mod 2.0 has is Horizon Lock. If DJI Osmo Action 4 or Insta360 Ace Pro (Pure Video mode) had this feature I’d make the switch.
Thanks Jamie, this camera had not been on my radar until now, but it'll definitely one I think about if/when I need a new one. Very impressive how it seems to handle high contrast situations.
Indeed. I have a direct footage comparison vid coming out shortly for you all. Very interesting to see how the cameras handle tricky lighting conditions 👌
Great review & seems like a good fit for you. I don't ride enough / record video enough in dark situations. So I use the GP11 as it has the bigger 8:7 aspect ratio which is the best for exporting to YT, Instagram & TikTok. I record in 5.3k @ 30fps & do not use post production coloring very often.
Great video, I was looking at what to start putting money away for and found the Action 4 to be the best priced and over the years I have seen other UA-camrs showcase the earlier versions but with the settings and low light bonus, being in the UK that is always a good thing to have, I will definitely be going down this route. It also goes native portrait mode with the magnetic clip which will be great for me as most of what I might record probably going to insta. 👌
Interesting to see what settings you use on the osmo 4 in particular using the ev at -0.3 in the dark forest. Also to consider in the dark how the stabilisation works very well, normally an issue on older GoPro models. I'm still happy using my GoPro Max and plugin for converting to regular footage, bit more long winded editing but very handy for converting to 9:16 footage for instagram, thanks for sharing Jamie! 😁📹🤙
How do you grade the footage in post? Does it come with the editing software? And what did you actually do to increase the depth, colour and contrast? Your before and after examples are unbelievable. It looked decent anyway, but then you made it look incredible. This is defo going on my shopping list.
It was really easy buddy. On this vid I just played around with the Filmora software I have. As simple as changing saturation, shadows and brightness. I've since learned you can actually download something called a LUT from DJI, which is a preset grading. You literally apply it to the vid and it pops straight away.
Great video mate. I’ve been looking for a camera for our trip to Morzine in July and after seeing your review I went for the DJI action 4. I’ve previously used GoPro. I’ve tried both your Pro and Auto setting suggestions and both look great, but I think the Pro setting is just a bit better. Can you tell me what you suggest for wind noise as the speed in Morzine will be an issue, I think? 👍
Of course. I use something like this.. store.insta360.com/product/x4-mic-wind-muff?c=2978&freelist=gmc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwr7ayBhAPEiwA6EIGxGnYa1q45hTn0lPXKJzg8wr6lUlYa0BJzsDnOc91uoLsN08iMj0vHhoCUNAQAvD_BwE&X-Country=GB They stick over the raised writing no bother. Also, don't worry about covering the hole in between the mics. I believe it is a white balance sensor for photos but covering it causes no ill effects for video 👍
Great review! Love my action 4, the low light capability is truly something else! Loved the editing on this one, the VoiceOver playing over the riding, great way to keep the ADHD'ers entertained 🤣
I personally do however it actually does a brilliant job without. I bought a set designed for an Insta 360 camera. They look like little velcro cubes. They work great 👍
@streetpigeonmtb it's definitely got the lowest out of the 3 with gopro having the most but I just don't think that's enough to knock it off the top spot, for footage on YT loam ranger has to be up there with the best quality and pretty sure he goes between the ace pro and x3/4
So, it's really important you get a good chest strap. Camelback do a chest protector with a mount, I also use a Stuntman mount. Every other mount I've tried is pretty crap.
OA4 owner here, camera is great but still struggles on top of NY NY( entrance to wood section). Do you think D log will help with extremely dark sections? I mostly using auto. This is just 300 action cam so people shouldn't expect Hollywood movies.Yes camera also struggling in super dark but less than others.Good light is a key for action cams👍
Changing to DLog and setting the shutter ranges/iso etc completely changes the camera. Don't know if you saw my Bike Park Wales vid but lots of those trails were darker than NYNY. Worth investing time in the settings 👌
@MateuszR. That's the thing mate, when you film in those settings there is no noise or loss of sharpness. I have no idea how to grade. I just added some basic saturation, and contrast between shadows and light. All done on an adjustment layer in my editior. Couldn't believe how easy it was 👌
Great edit sir! Camera looks awesome. I carry 2 GoPros so I can record non POV without the risk of messing up the angle when putting back on the chesty. How easy is it to reduce from super wide to narrow and back in settings?
You can set custom presets which can be accessed by a button switch. But if you can't be arsed it's easy to do from the menu. Worth noting the front screen is touch screen as well!
@@streetpigeonmtb sounds good, could be a one camera solution! The camera’s colour grading looks incredible as well. Are you finding it’s Saving time in post edit?
@MindfulTrailBiker I'd say the grading has added a little time, but only because my laptop gets stressed at the adjustment layer I've added. Saying that saves time with the drone because I can now film that in DLog also so the footage all looks the same. Overall I just think the DJI is the better all round solution for me. The magnetic clip is so simple but such a useful thing to have on the trail.
Full disclosure, I did not purchase. DJI sent me the camera for review. However, it has become my camera and I'm selling my GoPros. GoPros are excellent, I'm not going to bash them. However, the DJI is better overall IMO. I describe why I prefer it in the video 👍
@brianbathgate4944 yeah. Real progress in the last two years especially. GoPro are getting left behind. Can't believe they are still running the same sensor on the new Hero 13 Black 🤦♂️
@@streetpigeonmtb Yeah, the 13 is a massive disappointment. Nothing game changing apart from the macro lense, which is useless for bikers. Wish they’d tackle the “Go Pro effect”, find a way to make steep trails look steep.
@brianbathgate4944 yeah. They just keep rolling out the same sensor and repackaging the same hardware. It's really lazy development. Sad when you think how far ahead the Hero 7 and the Hero 10 were compared to their competitors.
Bought an OA4 after watching many UA-cam reviews and comparisons. What I’d failed to realised is just how many UA-cam’s are sponsored by, are promoting or have affiliated links to DJI. Really disappointed with image quality, take a look at road texture.. it’s simply missing haven at 4k, snow is always over exposed and cloud are just mushy. Returned for a GP11 and to me the image quality is a night and day difference. With the OA4’s larger sensor and lower pixel count it should technically be better in low light, in some scenarios it is but others it’s not. I think the issue is DJI’s compression algorithm…
Hey man. Sorry to hear you've not enjoyed it but I just can't agree with you. This vid was sponsored by DJI. But following this video I've since sold my Hero 10 and Hero 12. For the trails I ride the OA4 is a no brainer. Better lowlight, better audio and a magnetic clip.
