I liked that framing effect in the first book at 6min, how did you achieve the straight edges? Looks to clean to be erased, looks same as masking tape with watercolour! Thanks Marty!
Love the videos, just a quick fyi the graphite core was never lead, it was so named because mean it was first discovered the chemists at the time thought it was a form of lead, being soft and dark grey, however lead poisoning did occur in artist of the past due to the lead based paint containing 'white lead' (lead carbonate PbCO3). thanks for the vids.
Hi Nathan, I think original writing instruments, prior to the 16th century and before the discovery of graphite in quantity, were in fact lead. In the shape of wire. I think it was the paint on the later pencils that gave people the lead poisoning. Maybe they chewed the pencils, like we used to as kids as you elude to. Either way, I love the fact that they're non-toxic now. :-) Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a comment. ~Marty
Are the sketches of landscapes and urban scenes part of urban sketches or did you took a photograph and sketched at home or in your studio? They are so awesome, and I think it took a while to finisch them.
Hi Astrid - You ask a very good question. This is just my own opinion, but a sketching line is a looser, searching line and a graphic line seeks a particular uniform vector. Put another way, one is loose and free and the other seeks a straight and more linear path. Also, some people might say a graphic line is one generated on a computer, like in word or AutoCAD. Hope this helps. ~Marty
beautiful work.. I have these pencils and came in search of inspiration.
thanks for sharing.
Thanks Steve. Appreciate the visit.
It was so nice to see your sketchbooks. I enjoyed it.
+zainalu Thank you very much. - Marty

+Big C Yes, you got it. I used drafting tape to frame it in and that's it really. :-)

Thanks Eric - They were a combination of field sketches and drawings from references. ~Marty
Hey Marty! Which one is better - derwent sketching pencils or staedtler lumograph?
+zainalu They are both good. The Derwent's seem slightly softer to me. I use both in my work. Thanks - Marty
Don't forget the mysterious F pencil that no one uses that stands for Fine.
:-)
No one? That's my favorite pencil
@@oioi5149 I'm sure if he had a box of pencils with all the labels scratched off, he would be using the one that would be F

I'm tired of this abuse, I'll be taking my F pencil son away from here :(
Thank you Hannah G.
hey Marty!!umm to draw which is better the derwent skectching pencil or derwent graphite pencil?
Both are good. I tend to use Staedtler though. I also use the Faber-Castell drawing pencils, especially the harder ones like the 4H or 6H
what is the diffrence between the sketchingline and the graphic line?
