  • How To Update A BMW Key. This procedure would be used to update a BMW key for internally saved information which includes mileage, check control message information, and service information. In some cases the key can also show fault code information and service information bulletins that a service adviser can reference. This would be used before going in for service at your local BMW dealership in order to correctly identify all the needed information for your dealer visit.

    Happy New Year Roger. Nice video and your replies to others have been great. We are an independent German car specialty shop. We love using our key reader. Years ago, I remember reading an i8 key and it asking for a "door hinge maintenance" I found that interesting.
    On another note. Our main competitors are the franchise dealerships since our shop can do everything they can do and even many things that they can't. Despite this, I am still bothered when people refer to the dealers as 'stealers' and the like. We all know that not all dealers and shops are the same. Like most things in life, some are great, and some not so much. I just think that these types of comments and thoughts bring our industry down. Service and repair of modern vehicles is not easy when you consider all that goes with them; and the task is further compounded when you consider that we do this on German cars! I believe that many of us work hard to produce a quality product and work even harder to delight our customers to ensure their happiness and keep them and their families safe on the road. I believe those that strive for these and other important values should be revered as in many others in noble professions.
    Best wishes for you and your viewers for a healthy and happy new year.

      Hello @Integrity Motorcar! Wow, Well said! On i8's re-torquing of the hinges are part of the maintenance service :) It is pretty interesting. That is a fun BMW! Independents and Dealers all have great value to offer. Independents can do some repairs with savings due to lower labor rates and parts rates. And they often stand behind their work 100% Dealers can offer a 2 year unlimited mile warranty on all parts and labor for a replaced component and in some cases people do not even realize that their BMW has a specific warranty extension. Such as SULEV which covers these vehicles 15 years 150K miles in SULEV states. The good dealerships will inform customers about this warranty extension and repair the vehicle as needed at zero cost to the customer. Great value for those customers! I have heard of other dealerships who take a blind eye to these warranty extensions charging the customers full price customer pay.
      Thank you for your great insight and comment! Happy new year to you, your family, and co workers! And Happy New Year Subscribers!

      Hello Joe, This is on most BMW's except very early model like E36 and earlier. All newer vehicles like E90 3 series and up all update the key this way. Even E46 also have key information but they update while driving for 10 minutes below 30 mph.

    Hi and thanxs for this great tutorial. My both keyfobs, when red at dealership, can report everything except mileage. Which is suspicious to me. I bought the F11 530d few months ago and i have no idea what previous owner did to the car. I've tried this procedure here and it worked perfectly. Right afterwards, i drove just about 4 kms to the closest dealership, to see if they can read the mileage now, but no. The mileage shows zero from the key. The ISTA shows correct mileage though. Do you have any idea, what might be wrong with it?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  4 роки тому

      Hello, It is off that this would effect both keys. I have seen a weak battery in the key cause some odd issues but it may actually be the Key Reader software at the dealership that may be the issue.

      @@AskTheCarExperts Hi and thanxs for reply. Yes it is weird. It is happening by any dealer and bmw service. So it is not dealer related issue. I am suspecting CAS failure in some way or perhaps mileage tamper by previous owner. No idea... Just looking for some answers. BMW suggested ordering new CAS module plus keys. Quite expensive thing. :/ Also even thoughg i've changed all the timing chains and many other things, dealers are unable to write my service book/history because of that.

      @AskTheCarExperts  4 роки тому +1

      @@buzzdev I have a suggestion. Do a battery reset on your car. Disconnect the negative cable for 10 minutes and reconnect. Then do a short test drive and update the key. Maybe this will reset the CAS. Battery resets can be magical sometimes!

    Is it apply for all BMWs?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  4 роки тому +2

      Hello Xtatic, It does apply to all BMW's. Newer cars like F series and G series have a similar procedure except you hold the key to the column as there is no key slot. Even E46 stores the VIN and mileage but older vehicle update while driving under 30 mph for 10 minutes of driving.

    not really relevant, a dealer will use/check your key, but the tech will plug in there computer and pull all the relevant info, they will also do this as well if they need to, i swap between 2 key's and it's never been an issue, but that said, useful to know I guess

      also an indy would never need to do this only a main stealer, and only really used when you part ex it in, as know one else has the ability to pull the service history anymore. lol

      Hi Adrian, Very true. You helped me come up with another video idea :) The benefits of going to the "stealer" dealer for certain repairs. There are actually some interesting reasons to use the dealer for certain repairs. Granted not all dealers are created equal. I know some dealers that should be avoided and some dealers that go out of there way to give great value in servicing with them. But there are some interesting reasons to use the dealer. Video to come...and hopefully you find some value in the information :)

    nice to know, not very useful unless you are the stealer....

      Hi D G, There is some use for this feature. You can update your key and most dealers will do a key read at no charge. When fault codes are present some codes link to specific SIBs or service information bulletins which can sometimes identify bulletins relating to some odd symptoms. There is no charge for a key read. It can also identify if there are any service actions or open campaigns on your vehicle. Recalls and service actions are always free of charge. I thought this would be a good bit of information to pass on. Thanks for posting!
