same! i've never been a DM before, tho i played a couple sessions of Witchlight and it just seems so perfect for a beginner DM with some beginner players
Thank you! I can't wait to start this campaign with my players :) The tips on the starting town and where the carnival can be located was very helpful.
One thing I would like to point out for others is that the Lost Things hook doesn't exclude any players who pick the Witchlight Hand background or keep them from having any part to play until the Feywild. The hook puts them starting directly with the group at the entrance to the Carnival, and the Witchlight Hand could also have lost something to the Carnival as a child prior to joining as an employee. The Warlock's Quest hook actually starts the group separated and any Witchlight Hands will need to make their way to the others. Other than that, this is a very nice video with good info on getting started. I definitely will be watching more to get more guidance throughout the adventure!
Fantastic video. Running this tonight with our first session, I never considered where to actually put this carnival. Phandalen is a great idea. Thanks man! Appreciate your work on this.
I plan on starting this campaign in the next few weeks once we wrap our current campaign. I’m super excited about this module, and I know a few of my players are as well! Thanks for sharing all this helpful content!!
This will be my family's 1st dnd campaign. I chose it because you can get threw it without fighting. I myself love a dungeon craw and dark horror. I hope with this I can get them hooked and progress from here. Ordering the kit now. I will let you know how it goes
Thanks so much for this video! I can't wait to watch more on the Witchlight adventure. My hubby plays Dnd but he is always the DM and I sometimes play so I am running this campaign for him and his friends. I have already had one session in the carnival. I am not a super experienced dnd player so this is a lot of information for me as a DM. Looking forward to watching more of your videos on the witchlight carnival book!
I am a first time dm and I want to run WBTWL. My brother is an awesome DM and has been helping me, but he is playing in the campaign, so obviously, he can't help with everything. So, I started watching some videos on some general tips to being a good DM and then I watched a couple videos on WBTWL and I truly appreciate your breakdown of the campaign and how you handled certain situations! I'm very nervous to run my first campaign and I want to be a great DM for my players, so this was a very helpful video for me!!
I would like to point out the the "chicken foot" tattoo mentioned in the video also happens to be algiz (sometimes called elhaz), the Norse rune of protection. Bearing a protection rune is hardly surprising for an experienced spellcaster.
I'm intending to use both hooks, I really can't choose between them. It's nice to give the party an overall unified purpose, as well as give the characters' individual motivations for why they were going to go in the first place.
Was actually just thinking of doing this myself. Maybe that's how the Warlock chose these people for this quest, BECAUSE they lost things at the carnival and have that connection to the feywild
I'm excited to have enough time to actually start a campaign, It's such a whimsical thing that I want to throw people into. Also to do some crazy acting
I am planning on combining both hooks. 2 of my players are employees of the carnival and the other three will have stollen items and the warlock calls them for his mission so they have a reason to complete the entire thing.
Thanks for the video! Question: Is it not weird, that after a witch encounter, you should go straight to the next hag lair? So you could possibly do 2 levels in one session, or 2 levels without any other encounter in between?
I was actually concerned about that, meeting a hag could very much lead them to another region what I would do in this case is have them level up next session
I've seen others bring this up as well, since it seems not well structured. The best suggestion I've come across is to level them up when they enter a new location, and level them up when they come upon where the Hag's lair is. For example, they gain a level upon entering Hither. Then, when they reach Downfall, where Bavlorna is located, they level up again. It isn't perfect, especially if they beeline straight to the Hag, but it could be a better method than the book's.
I'm considering using both hooks. The Warlock sends them a message to help him because travelling to the Feawild is easier if you have a part of yourself there already.
I was just gonna have the party meet in the line to the ticket booth, and when they meet with the ticket booth goblin he assumes they're already a group (in reality, he can see they're all loners returning to the carnival (lost things hook) and are in need of friendship) that way we can jump right out of the gate with a group introduction and then follow that up immediately with the carnival. Plus then if they wanna see different attractions they don't feel as bad about splitting up
Do you care if I steal your idea for starting area??? I've been racking my brain where to put his pumpkin patch, and I was thinking somewhere outside Neverwinter. Tomorrow night, session 0!
@@SteelySam thank you, I just finished watching your video pertaining to chapter 1 and you made it a lot easier to see the bottom line and what to focus on more. I was on my 10th page of notes and starting to feel overwhelmed🤣
Bro, preciate this. How did you do consequences for violating the Rules of Conduct in the Feywild? No one has answered me with any ideas, and the pre-written doesn’t offer any options.
if someone violates the rules then the hags and other creatures have no obligation to follow the rules for violators, I would put a time limit on it or maybe some path of redemption. Those rules make the party's life much easier and they would be strongly encourage to follow the rules if they experience what it's like to be outside the system.
So I'm running lost mines of phandelver and while party memeber keep missing the date due to life no big. For those that have shown up I've been giving side quests, as it all comes to a close I always like the idea of doing a spell jammer missing but wasn't sure how to lead into it. So my idea is to simply have the twilight campaign and somehow have the carnival be killer clowns from outer space 😅
love this guide! i'm really excited to run wbtw, it's such a cool setting. quick question, around 2:22 or so in this video i see a "roll table to vtt" button on the screenshots of the lost things tables. i'm just wondering what you use to get d&d beyond content into a vtt, and which vtt you use. is it foundry?
I started working through this late last year and revisiting it to possibly run it soon. Why not just run both adventure hooks? I'm thinking of starting it with Lost Things and OTW to the carnival, the PC's come across the pumpkin patch and they are then asked by the Warlock to help him out when he finds out where they're going.
My friends want to play the game and im the apointed DM (which is good, because we have no forever dms) So im checking everything i can so that i can properly run it

Day 9 of asking if you can do mithril since you did adamantite, Maybe even a seires on different materials

We are rebooting our game and thought "Witchlight" would make for the perfect starting point. So, a year late, your videos are still timely.

Good short introduction to the module. Great work on the content and very good audio quality. Keep it up man!
I used this carnival as a portal to a homebrew domain of dread. This is very interesting
I got this book as a christmas gift thanks so helpful and perfecy timing
