  • Defunct Games reviews My Brother Rabbit by Artifex Mundi, available now on PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and PC.
My Brother Rabbit is a sweet and emotionally-charged point and click adventure game that looks great and is well executed. It's a little repetitive at times and a bit on the easy side, but it's full of personality and all but guaranteed to warm your heart. My Brother Rabbit is yet another great example of how tragedy can fuel the most memorable adventure games.

The gameplay is extremely similar to the free game "The Tiny Bang Story", which is available on Steam.

Most memorable game? Might go with Super Mario Lost Levels. Not so much for the game, but the conversation. Told a friend of mine while I was frustrated that those levels should have stayed lost. She told me how that wasn't very nice. Later, when she played it, she said, "You're right, Jen. They should have stayed lost." 😂

Most memorable would be Phantasy Star 2. First time I really saw permadeath (even if it didn't make sense) and the ending has stuck with me forever.
Panic was funny. Still have my sega cd copy. I remember growing boobs all over after drinking the stuff in that bottle.

For me the most memorable game was either Disgaea 2 or the Witcher 3. The tactics of Disgaea 2 drew me in, while the rich story and incredible moments of the Witcher 3 resonate with me. I still play both from time to time.

For me it's Mega Man X. While its story is bare bones by today's standards and wasn't extensive even by standards of the day, I can still remember the first time I watched Zero sacrifice himself for X. I wasn't into RPGs at the time so I had no idea what final fantasy and the like was doing with storytelling. For me, this was the first time a video game tried to invoke an emotional response. I just couldn't believe such a powerful character had been brought down. I was still hoping for a chance to play as him!
It made the final fight with Sigma all the more meaningful. When I finally beat him after a hundred tries, I had a feeling of not only accomplishment but also righteous revenge. I'm not sure if any game has given me that exact feeling since. Others have invoked other emotions of course, but nothing has successfully made me feel like I was actually avenging the death of a friend. Shenmue probably stood a chance but of course, we are still waiting for the conclusion to that story. (And it seemed to hint at a different path anyway)
It probably wouldn't work for today's kids, as they are used to complex stortelling in games. In 1995 or 1996, this was something different, especially for an action game. Hell, while typing this, the music that plays during Zero's death (and other parts of the game) filled my head, and it's been a while since I have played it. That's the kind of impact it had on gradeschool me.

Life of Black Tiger was the most memorable for me. I still have dreams about it.
