  • Colorized Cowboy Film: Fort Courageous - An ex-cavalry sergeant, being escorted to prison after being convicted of a crime he didn't commit, finds himself leading the remnants of a unit that has been under Indian attack at a fort.
    Fort Courageous (1965)
    Director: Lesley Selander
    Writers: Richard H. Landau
Stars: Fred Beir, Don 'Red' Barry, Hanna Landy
    Genres: Action | Western
Release date: 1 May 1965 (USA)
    Country: United States
    Language: English
    Also known as: Fuerte valeroso
Filming locations: Fredonia, Arizona, USA | Colorado City, Arizona, USA | Kanab, Utah, USA
    Storyline:
An ex-cavalry sergeant, being escorted to prison after being convicted of a crime he didn't commit, finds himself leading the remnants of a unit that has been under Indian attack at a fort. The commanding officer has been killed, the Indians vastly outnumber them, and the only bargaining chip they have is the fact that they have captured the Indian chief's son.
    Reviews:
On his way to the military prison on Alcatraz, wrongly convicted soldier Fred Beir and his transport are attacked by marauding Indians. Barely making it to the fort, Beir and the rest of his men find it the site of a massacre and themselves surrounded.
One of the last of the old-fashioned studio B-westerns, this is a stark, grim affair, with some nasty bits of violence and torture, a weird preoccupation with sexual assault(!) and a mean performance by Donald "Red" Barry as the fort's commanding officer and lone survivor.
However, it drops the ball in the end, with a hastily tacked-on romance and a conclusion that's abrupt, painfully unrealistic and patently bizarre. Clocking in at a slim seventy-two minutes, there's really no excuse in the world for it to end so abruptly and so unsatisfactory!
Still, it's worth watching for the most part. There's some nice black-and-white photography and a grittiness that anticipates the wave of spaghetti westerns and their American counterparts that flooded US theaters the following year and pretty much ended the need for these kind of cheaply made westerns. I enjoy these cavalry , indian movies now and especially as a kid decades ago . Never occured to me back then how in a hot dusty climate those Cavalry tunics were bright blue and spotless even though they had been worn for weeks , day and night and no trooper or officer took a bath for a month.

Definitely going on my wish list. I have about 40 movies in my Cavalry vs. Indians Subsection in my Western Category. Note, John Wayne Westerns are listed under John Wayne. John Wayne is the only single Actor that has, not just 1, but 2 Subsections all of his own. John Wayne Westerns, and Non Western John Wayne In Classics. There are also a few John Wayne Movies, post 1960, in Action, Subsection History by Timeline! Longest Day, In Harm's Way, and Green Berets.
    Update: ordered it yesterday.

I enjoy the rough moral and fellowship of these men from yesterday. The women act silly and couldn't be that sentimental and immature in the reality of those tough days.
I'd give the patient those few drops of water to drink rather than pat his forhead with. And leave the sweat on him, since it has a cooling effect and would thus save evaporation/sweating. Nice of them to offer the captive a drink, mad to leave the water bottle there instead of hopng for the spring o fill it from..

Any one of a zillion US Calvary Soldiers/Cowboys,//Settlers in reality, could be our Ancestors, their families having left The Old Country to find a better life. I hate to think they might've gone through battles like this. But the American Indians had their Story too. 🌌🌎✍️

Good all the way up to the end. What a ridiculous ending. Like they ran out of funding and had to cut it short. I'm Alaskan Native, Funny we Never see the reality of how the tribes ward against one another. The brutality was Not brought here by others. The slavery the bigotry the horrors of war and killing of the innocent all where here as long as Humens were. I'd pay to see an old western that was depicted Accurately but in todays Politicized WokeWood that's Never going to happen. As to the question of "Manifest Destiny" If it had not been America, it would have been the Spanish wiped out whole civilizations with impunity as their citizens had No say. Or the French, who likewise wiped out and decimated whole civilizations wherever they went in the name of France. Or the Russians who were already in Alaska and we all know how good they are with human rights, its estimated that the body counts where in the millions but as no one was ever allowed to enter Sabera without their express permission, the size of the country and the secretive nature of the communist parties' activities in the area the numbers will nave be known for sure. Perhaps China or even the Dutch. All of them with way worse humanitarian records and not one of them has EVER addressed their slaughters. It was however inevitable that the tribes would be defeated by any of the more advanced and more powerful nations as that is how Nature works.

I think the reason the old western movies don’t show any gore or brutality is because it wasn’t standard practice back in the 50s and 60s when the western genre was at its commercial peak. If you want a western with blood watch Django Unchained.

Ridiculous ending. One of the worst in motion picture history.
I'm always left wondering why soldiers select the most venerable places to shoot from at these forts. They stand up over the top so as to be easy targets for enemies when they could have cutouts in the wall to fire from and not be exposed.
Pitiful excuse for a rushed romance. It is worth watching up until the ending.

Too bad he wouldn’t have wearing stripes anymore. If he was convicted they would have been cut off and he wouldn’t have had a rank just the name prisoner. Also this colorized version is irritating due to who ever did it not knowing anything about the Cavalry. The soldiers strips and shoulder boards are light blue….. signifying Infantry, not Cavalry which is yellow.
