The games are inspired by the novel, which is written by a polish writer, which he was inspired by eastern European folklore, that's why the names are like that, and that's one of the many reasons why I love it, the lore, the game, the attention, the detail, the names, the themes
"which he was inspired by eastern European folklore" I know this is the meme but Sapkowski explicitly states he was much more inspired by Germanic folklore and Arthurian legend.
Interesting note. R. Talsorian Games owns the Cyberpunk 2020/Red RPG IP. CD Projekt Red licensed it for their (still) upcoming video game. Then CDPR gave RTG a license to turn their Witcher video game IP into a TTRPG. I appreciate that "scratch each other's backs" exchange between the companies.
For the names, a lot of them do have Eastern European origin, but some of them also have an Irish Gaelic/Celtic feel to them. For example, Aen Seidhe is pronounced En Shay. The Celtic/Early European theme really shows through with the creatures and some of the names of important places
Yeah, as is tradition in most fantasy, the elves are somewhat gaelic and celtic, whilst due to the writer being polish, the names are straight out of eastern europe, certainly for people of redania and temeria
Hi Tim, I've only watched the first 1:40 but can already tell thsi is going to be super useful. So far I also agree that the paper is too thin. If you go on to note/complain that there's a ton of rules just haphazardly placed in the margins of the pages, I think we're going to be on the same page for a lot of this. I was struggling a bit to figure out how to play, so will watch your videos and see if it helps.
Yea, some of the rules were out of place, especially in the combat section. It would go from critical hits to healing wounds, then back to damage, then back to wounds.
The Witcher RPG is fantastic. It is on the "crunchier" side of things when it comes to mechanics. There are a ton of them, but you don't have to use them all. Can just pick what you like and leave the rest out. Pondsmith, one of the writers, is super smart and just a great guy overall. Most IP's like this seem to not be done as well because they rely on the IP to sell the books. Not this one. It is a really great product and I would recommend it to just about anyone. Great read even if you never intend to play it.
I've always wanted to try a tabletop rpg (DND) but never got the full motivation to go try it. I am only now coming across this game and i am super interested. Would really like to know how and where i can start in 2023. Help and advice welcomed
@Logician Tim I just bought it and at the first look it looks really cool but the bestiary is so ridiculously thin! Also, the illustration of the Endrega is too much pixelated...this picture looks like a super nintendo sprite from a game. The other arts are really great though.
Yea, the bestiary in the book is relatively small. It seems like a separate book just for that chock full of monsters and goodies would be a great addition. And yea, I mention that Endrega picture when I get to that part in another video. I guess someone in pre-press let one slip.

I was gonna say that. He rants because they don't have names like John or Robert 🤣

Also lots of old Irish such as Aen Seidhe = Sidhe (fairy folk), and Norse

Didn't know this existed. Added to wishlist :D

@@LogicianTim That name Pondsmith is familiar. Certainly will check it out one day. Also, I subbed!

You know what's awesome about the elves? The ship could 200% be a space ship/craft
