    I have a large pine tree on my property and it sheds a LOT of dead needles every year. I use them and grass clippings as a mulch and I rarely have to pull out weeds.

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  6 років тому

      Do you find the pine needles lower your Ph?

    • @nunyabiznis817
      @nunyabiznis817 6 років тому +1

      No, because pine and spruce needles are only acidic when they are alive (green) not when they are dead (brown). Little story, I also have a lot of spruce trees with a ton of dead needles under them. 3 years ago when I started growing my own plants from seeds (indoors) I had grown too many tomato plants so I decided to grow a couple in 5-gallon buckets (which never worked well for me before). I had enough potting soil for one but I ran out and didn't want to buy anymore (I am a frugal gardener).
      Anyway, so what I did for the other container tomato was I used the rich dirt underneath the spruce needles and the spruce needles themselves for my potting soil. I'd say I used about 2 parts dirt to 1 part needles. The needles were used for drainage (like perlite). Well, that ended up being the best container tomato I had ever grown. In fact, it was better than most of my raised bed tomato plants that year (I wasn't using pine needles as mulch at the time in my raised beds).
      But one thing that you have to watch out for when you use any kind of mulch is that you could get a lot of pill bugs (aka rolly pollies) under the mulch. Pill bugs are not evil bugs, they generally only eat decaying organic matter to break it down further for worms to be able to eat. HOWEVER, pill bugs MIGHT eat small tender seedlings like radishes and greens even though they are live plants. Some people have this problem with pill bugs, some don't, and it depends on various factors so you have to test it for yourself. You might have problems with pill bugs one year, but not the next. But it's not a good idea to kill them. In general they are a beneficial insect but can be a pest insect in some cases.
      I really hope you try mulching at least part of your garden because it would cut down on your weeding and keeps your ground moist and soft and feeds the ground as it decays. But if you use overhead sprinklers to water your garden, don't use wood chip mulch (unless it's fine, double or triple shredded) because the fine water spray from the sprinkler has a hard time getting to the ground below. You have to water by hand. Instead, use something that lets water through like straw or pine needles. If you are worried about the pine needles, use straw. I also don't recommend grass clippings if you use an overhead sprinkler because they get matted down and don't let water through unless you hand water with a spray head on your hose at close range.

    Wow between back surgery and taking care of my ill aunt I haven't been able to have my garden and some of the weeds have grown so big I have to take a shovel to them. Can only pull a few at a time. Wish I had a big tiller like the one you showed. My garden is small though. Love your container tips. Maybe this year I won't have to depend on the grocery store. Ha thanks

      Yes, the cultivator only digs down 3-4 inches. This is deep enough to dig up weeds by the roots

    How do you store all you beautiful vegetables. I know you can eat it all before going bad. I noticed you freeze a lot, but what about potatoes and onions.
    Do you do any dehydrating or canning?

      Good question sissie, potatoes and onions will keep in a cool dry place for months. We wet up bins in our garage. We don't do any canning yet but we plan to do a lot of canning when Nancy retires and we relocate to our rural homestead in Florida.

      We never get rid if weeds completely only control them. This takes frequent maintenance. I use a cultivator which greatly reduces the job. I only have to hand pull on the row and cultivate between the rows

    • @brandon3872
      @brandon3872 6 років тому

      Mom Of 2 If they're not close to other plants I pour boiling hot water on weeds and it kills them to the roots without any bad chemicals but if they're near plants you want to keep you'll have to hand pull them. Boiling water works well if you have cracks in your paving.

      I replaced my gas tiller with an MTD battery operated tiller. I like that I don't need the gas/oil and with the battery it's very light to use in my raised beds.

      I use it every 3 or 4 weeks for weed control. I also cultivate after a heavy couple of rains to break up the packed soil. Doesn't seem to bother the worms cause I have plenty
