I seriously think Terry Gilliam is one of the most underrated directors of all time. It's unfortunate how producers prefer to promote shitty moneymaking vehicles as opposed to actual art.
I admire him so much. A filmmaker who is still going after tremendous hard times in the industry, a lesser filmmaker would have thrown in the towel long ago in his shoes. He is the director future generations to look as an example .
My first movie that I saw by Gilliam that I can recall was Brazil at 8 or 9 years old, without knowing the name, and I loved it, even though I didn't understand all the context of it. The imagery stayed with me so much that many years later in college, i was able to track down the movie based on my vague memories, and then everything clicked in my understanding. I have been a huge Gilliam fan ever since.
I remember seeing Time Bandits when I was a young lad of about seven, and it had a profound and lasting impact on me in a very positive and amazing way. I've been a dedicated fan of his films ever since. THANK YOU, Mr. Gilliam, thank you for being who you are and doing what you do. The world is all the more better for it. My world is, anyway.
Terry made Brazil and The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys. Oh yes, and he was the man that adapted my favourite book 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' into film. I stand in awe of this man's achievements.
The Adventures of BM is my favorite film.....I was a soldier in Baghdad...fun story: got to meet Robin Williams on a USO tour, he signed my copy of Tabm, and said "This was my favorite film." ❤ Thank you, Terry
As a giant Potterhead, I can only imagine how things would have been if Gilliam had got that job. I do love all the movies but definitely agree with him that Prisoner of Azkaban is the only one that gets close to an actual piece of cinematic art, as Cuarón really brought a freshness to the franchise. And yes, it was obvious Gilliam wouldn't get the job as the executives wanted a safer choice, but upon reading Harry Potter: Page to Screen we can see that he was Rowling's first and favorite choice (after she got rid of Spielberg!). Although I'm not sure whether we would have got the 8 movies in the end if he was the one to start the franchise... maybe audiences wouldn't get so well his vision given his movies are not really targeted to the blockbuster level, and thus later Potter films wouldn't be done? Maybe we'd get an entire Gilliamnesque franchise that would gather a cult following? Only God knows that, but damn, it would have been definitely different. Maybe more interesting, but the way Harry Potter is seen in popular culture would be something completely unimaginable. And as a giant Potterhead who also happens to be a huge Python fan, I can only imagine as well how cool it would have been if more Pythons were involved in the movies. Fuck, even if they were secondary roles. I can actually imagine Michael Palin or Eric Idle taking on professor roles, or even in the Ministry of Magic (I can also imagine Graham Chapman perfectly within the Potter universe, which makes me even sadder that he's dead). John Cleese's role in Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets was so small that I actually get frustrated upon seeing it. Oh well, one can only dream...
half the potter films are underrated as hell. Half blood prince and hallows part 1 are really really good and definitely pieces of cinematic art imo. And the first two captured the books very well, Gilliams would have been very good obviously but Columbus' are timeless, especially with the new 4K prints, they and the films have aged so well. 3 6 7 are my fav and all great.
So Terry tells us he only changed one scene in Fischer King and it is the Grand Central Scene where he added the valse... He just added the most memorable scene of the movie !
Great idea for a show! Looking forward to seeing who you guys get next! Terry Gilliam is quite a big name for the debut episode! How about Christopher Nolan for episode 2 before Interatellar is released?
I am not a fann but you are fantastic! Mr Gilliam. In the same way I feel about Tarkovsky Kurosawa, Manray, Polanski K.LDickson, R.Fludd and Lang,,,,Thank you.
I really wish Gilliam had done "Harry Potter." It may not have been what I pictured when reading the books, but it would have been a hell of a lot better than the trite Hollywood gave us.
I like some aspects of Synders adaptation of Watchman the cinematography is beautiful it's just the acting I found it hard to believe them it's kind of a mixed bag the intro is stellar job but to be honest Watchman is best enjoyed when the graphic novel is read but it would have been a better mini series Gilman would have done a good job but it wouldn't be the graphic novel...
i feel like I would like to meet maybe even model this guy as a entertainer myself. Terry Gilliam should had done the Hobbit instead of Jackson as much i m a fan of PJ he wasn't right for The Hobbit.
Watch the trailer for the new Mortal Engines movies directed by Peter Jackson. The whole time I just kept thinking it looked like a modern Terry Gilliam project.
What’s with the Brits constantly saying ‘sort of’. It’s like this inability to actually own anything you’re saying and sounds ill-confident. Similar to when people say ‘you’ in the general sense to describe an experience they had personally, but don’t have the nut to take ownership and just say ‘I’. Own your ideas and your questions guys, it will make you bolder and more confident.

Best director ever. At least for me. To hell with Hollywood, Terry. They should hand him blank checks.

Terry Gilliam is awesome, i love all his films :)

The absolute best. I hope we get the privilege to see a couple more of his films
Love that the interviewer was so gracious in allowing Terry to speak freely, not interjecting unnecessarily as many interviewers do.
Nothing worse than in interviewer asking a second question in the middle of the persons answer to the interviewers first question
So true. I just want to hear them talk about their process and stories.
"I'd rather you f*ck it up than me"
Alan Moore is such a class act
No.
My favourite director of all time!
His films changed my life!
He's an absolute genius! I admire his work tremendously. Thank you for sharing this interview.
i have so much respect for this man
The Adventures of BM is my favorite film.....I was a soldier in Baghdad...fun story: got to meet Robin Williams on a USO tour, he signed my copy of Tabm, and said "This was my favorite film." ❤
Thank you, Terry
if terry had done potter, omg i can only imagine. i wish i could watch those films in an alternate universe.
One of the best Directors of the last 50 years.

He was the only one who could tackle fear and loathing... boy did he
This intimidated me at first but I'm happy I clicked this!!!!
Literally same
Great tribute to the memory of Heath Ledger by Terry here
This man is a pure artistic genius
So Terry tells us he only changed one scene in Fischer King and it is the Grand Central Scene where he added the valse... He just added the most memorable scene of the movie !
Total Film need to go back to making more videos like this. Really great interviews with interesting people who have interesting things to say.
Masterpieces..ALL OF THEM. His vision is BEYOND film.
He has a weird hybrid accent between British and American accent
I think he's been living in the UK since the late 60s.
He was American born but mostly raised in England
Well accents get muddled when you live in different cultures he comes by it honestly.
Always was an odd hybrid accent...the secret weapon to all things Python
Brazil is an excellent film and very underrated. it is like an after death experience not in heaven or in hell.
Terry Gilliam is my Favorite Film Maker ☺️

Great job Sam. Just need to be more relaxed. I know it's easier said than done when it's Terry sitting opposite you.
at 4325: = Terry: "the virtual world is a safer world [perhaps]" - my take obviously: it is a place of great imagination!
Terry seems pretty awesome by the way.
Thunderbolt and lightfoot brilliant in arlington road bin laden took notes. Well done jeff.
He is a true visionary and an amazing director on like Stanley Kubrick
What about Tideland?
when you have 5 hours of a film, you release it as two !!!
Please lose the buttons within the video screen. Otherwise great work here!
I really wish Gilliam had done "Harry Potter." It may not have been what I pictured when reading the books, but it would have been a hell of a lot better than the trite Hollywood gave us.
Who did the sound level on this video? I had to turn all my volume settings up and I could barely hear what they were saying.
Best director since Kubrick!
why is the volume so damned low?
Drop the damn titles from the side. Couldn't watch this because they annoyed me so much.

I feel so sorry for michelle she didnt deserve heath another victim of the perth drug scene.
I wonder if he ever saw the Director's Cut of Watchmen
Listen, those director’s cuts may make the films less compressed, but they don’t fix the main issues.

British people are generally self-deprecating.
👍😘
Fcking imagine if he directed Watchmen! The Zazk Snyder was good, but not great.
yeah he's a great director but he's also THE ONLY fucking american member of monty python
Host SPEAK UP - STOP MUMBLING. ELOCUTION.
Thank you.
The bookmarks of certain comments/topics of his on the right is visually very facking annoying!
