It would be so cool if someone could make a wrap sandwich with these techniques. Or if someone put wrap sandwich bread in their hair and made a cute look with it ... brb. Joking aside, I loved the looks and hope buzzfeed does more like this in the future.
I wrap my hair sometimes when I sleep. It's actually recommended for anyone with curly hair rather than just trying it up. No one's going to tell me I'm wrong because I use fabric to keep my hair nice.
I have probably a really stupid question, and I'm sorry I don't know, but what is the purpose of headwraps? Is it just because they look pretty (because the girl in the video looked gorgeous) or are they for something else?
I always wear bandanas, but whenever I tie a knot, it hurts, no matter how loose I make it. I know it's different than a headwrap, but are there any tips on that?
I'm so jealous of women of colour! They can pull these looks off and they always look gorgeous! When I try them I look like a potatoe with a scarf on it's head...
I looooove headwraps, and i get that is a cultural thing that originated from black community's - but I would LOVE to see some wraps or scarfs on white 'heads'.. The thing that always bugs me when trying to do a wrap is that my lack of volume in the hair department just makes it look not quite right....
I'm a white girl watching this video because I wear headwraps sometimes out of respect for my great grandmother who was one of the hardest working members of the woman's land army in ww2.
I'm white but I have really curly hair and use these (not African patterned ones, just plain) at home to make my hair more manageable and out of the way but sometimes I'll realise I need to go out but I'm scared that it's still cultural appropriation? Do you think I would offend people out in public? I usually just try to stay in or take it off and wear a big hat or wear a hood to cover it if I'm walking the dog or running to the shops.
Question.. I know that these headwraps are African, and are usually to be worn out. But I was wondering if you also wear these to bed? How great is it protecting black women's hair? I'm wanting to know not only to educate myself but also I have very thick hair that seems to tangle no matter what. I've been trying to find some way to tame it. Like I said, I know these are African headwraps, especially because of the patterns, and I understand there are people out there wanting to make a trend out of your rich and beautiful culture, but I promise that is not what I am trying to do. I would really appreciate feedback :)
I really love these head wraps and I would love to wear these to school. I just have one question. I'm white and where I go to school, people get mad at almost anything. Do you think people would get mad at me for wearing a head wrap like this or not? This is a legitimate question because i don't want to make anyone mad.
To be safe, just wear a jewish head wrap. Or maybe the last style that the lady did. These are known as African head wraps and if a white person does it than...i don't know.
Actually no, don't wear a Jewish head wrap. Those are reserved for married women who have taken on the halachic dictated modesty style of dress. Don't encourage the appropriation of one culture to avoid appropriating another.
Maheedatu THANK YOU!!!!!! When it comes to black Americans they are the first to scream "appropriation" yet won't even give credit to something they too are appropriating for their gain. Mschewwwwww.....
Honestly it isn't appropriation. We have a history of our own as well. Our great great & great great great grandmothers were forced to wear these because white women did not want black women to show their hair. These styles have been passed down to us. Just because you are still in the mother land doesn't make the culture any less ours.
I honestly see no difference between a black American wearing this or a white person. Both have ancestry tied to Africa, one is just closer. Either way, it is not your direct culture or do even know what it means or the real name(s) for it. I have yet to meet a native African call this "head wrap". It is like when my Indian friends laugh at people saying "chai tea". But good luck with your ancestry.com research. Maybe that will give you and the rest of the racist black people on this video more ammo to be angry.
SupportBIB 92 the difference is black Americans don't know their heritage, and they can't just hop onto the bandwagon now that African fashion is becoming popular
This is a genuine question I have but do people get offend over other people wearing head wraps? Because I've always wanted to wear one but also don't want to offend people? I hope my questions doesn't come off as rude or anything and if so I'm sorry
I love head accessories, and I've eyed off head scarves for quite some time now. I've never actually tried them because despite being of mixed heritage, none of it is African. I ask, in earnest, if there is a way for me to try this without being accused of cultural appropriation? I know some people can be very protective of their culture, especially when it isn't as recognised as it should be. Which is why it is so much easier to adopt Japanese culture, as it is a culture about the adoption of other cultures and most people recognise it for what it is. I'd hate to be one of those people that just goes "I like how this looks" and completely disregard the significance of it to another culture (case in point, the formal headdresses of different nations of Native Americans, even though there are many of those nations whose culture I love). Is the distinction simply knowledge? Sharing culture is a wonderful thing, but it has to be done with understanding.
Hey I find that really beautiful. But do you think that as a whiter than white girl wearing an head wrap like that (these kind of African fabric) would be cultural appropriation ?
i told a white girl i liked the headscarf wrap styles like this and wanted to start wearing them, and she told me it was cultural appropriation, can anyone weigh in on this? I think its really cute but i don't want to wear something thats bad for pasties like me
can you explain why? like I get that black people wear them a lot, but a lot of other cultures have a variety of headscarves too, and from my knowledge headscarves have always been more of a utility/fashion item and not religious or sacred. Like do people really discriminate against this style of headscarf (like how dreadlocks are associated with 'being dirty')?
taylorcrowbirdie wear whatever you want sweety, Its not racist to wear scarves on your head. All women of all colours do it. This video simply shows you different styles to wear them in 😊
Because certain places in the south had laws regarding free black women and their hair. The law was made so black women had to cover their hair. Black women abided by the law but used elaborate scarves and techniques to wrap them as a statement. They wanted black women to not show their hair because it made them more appealing and more sexual. It was a way black women took the oppressive laws and made it they're own. black hair is a big cultural importance from before we were taken as slaves. This is a way we can not only protect our hair but embrace our stolen culture. It's the same thing we did "N" word we took it from our oppressors to show they had no power over us. But when someone from the oppressive culture takes it as a fashion statement or anything else it reinforces the original oppressive meaning.
taylorcrowbirdie its not that black people just "wear them alot". its a staple of african culture. when white girls start wearing it then theyll start acting like theyve invented some new trend as if my black looks better on you
Why am I watching this I don't even have a headwrap

Thanks for the tutorial! These wraps are great for the days when I'm in between protective hairstyles!
Those head wraps are GORGEOUS!
I wear headwraps because they look good but sometimes it's because my original hairstyle just refuses to work. :-)
Sometimes my hair needs washing and I haven't got round to it yet.
do you ever get off the internet or
TheMovieMyLife how are you always the top comment on every video I watch?
Mojca Hartman obviously you don't looking at how many videos you watch :)
Is it culturally appropriating to wear one of youre not African American? And if it's not is it racist for me to assume so?
in Jamaica we call these tie heads and we often use them to protect hairstyles while we sleep
It would be so cool if someone could make a wrap sandwich with these techniques. Or if someone put wrap sandwich bread in their hair and made a cute look with it ... brb.

I have probably a really stupid question, and I'm sorry I don't know, but what is the purpose of headwraps? Is it just because they look pretty (because the girl in the video looked gorgeous) or are they for something else?

Is this a repost?
I'm black, but I'm light skin and I'm scared if I wear this, people will get triggered and think that I'm trying to wear this as a trend.

Yasssss honey
You should have just named the video. "How to tie African head- wrap" because those fabric are purely West African Ankarah prints.
Maheedatu THANK YOU!!!!!! When it comes to black Americans they are the first to scream "appropriation" yet won't even give credit to something they too are appropriating for their gain. Mschewwwwww.....

It is our direct culture if our families never stopped wearing them.
That "chai tea" reference is an apples and oranges comparison.
SupportBIB 92 the difference is black Americans don't know their heritage, and they can't just hop onto the bandwagon now that African fashion is becoming popular
i can't even wrap a toel in my head when my hair is wet lol
BRAVOOO

Hey I find that really beautiful. But do you think that as a whiter than white girl wearing an head wrap like that (these kind of African fabric) would be cultural appropriation ?
The thing is that, she looks great with that,I would just look like a potato with something in my head

rofl
Omg lol funniest comment ever
Ben Mogensen lol
...isn't that a sort of repost?
Lets see how fast Kylie Jenner posts a selfie of her wearing this on Instagram
African head-wrap styles and wax fabric. You forgot to mention that.
Lycia Sabrina Guerbas.. thank you for mentioning that! I thank we should call it African culture appropriation.
👏👏👏
You meant "Afro-centric headwraps".
You know, White European women can also wear headwraps. It's not an exclusively African thing. Far from that.
Hi
Can asians wear this without being judged?
Hello everybody ! I hope you have a cool summer not like the lil' potato I am...
No matter what I use in my hair or on my head, it always slides off.
Voilà.
Here
Why?

taylorcrowbirdie yeahhhhhh dont wear them especially if it's Africa print. Your friend is right its about culture appreciation
