    Having worked on a DARPA project, they stress building technology demonstration systems quickly using off the shelf commercial components. They had the right mindset for this fast and agile research and development approach as opposed to the slow and bloated MIC defense projects. As a SW engineer, the motto was "just make it work". Best and most enjoyable project I ever worked on
    The project was a stealth UAV called Darkstar. It is now declassified and on display at the Smithsonian, or else I would be hauled off to jail for even mentioning it.

      Why do we declassify this stuff? Does the government not realize that as soon as we've shown proof-of-concept our enemies will benefit by not wasting resources on projects that won't work.

    • @nathanlockman1554
      @nathanlockman1554 Рік тому +14

      @@josephdestaubin7426 Good question. It has to do with our constitution. We the people have the right to know what our government is doing with the resources "taxes" we surrender to them. We also have a right to know how they weild the power we grant them. It is an extremely important set of checks and balances.
      We do however recognize as a people that we have enemies, and so we don't want them to have an advantage or edge on us. So top secret military or intelligence materials and documents are allowed to be kept from the public for a set period of time. This usually is 15-20 years. By the time these projects are declassified, they are far into the rearview mirror of technology. We also don't declassify a lot of the detailed designs or software that operates them. Just the science behind them. They are able to keep most of the software and detailed engineering secret because they contract with private companies. Those companies aren't required by law to disclose that intellectual property to the public.

      If the USA were sure that they would win the economic war, there would be a valid reason to allow the Soviets to put some satellites over the USA and establish a precedent that it was an acceptable practice. Following that, the media could instigate a Soviet scare, similar to before World War II against Germany, in order to strengthen the military-industrial complex and maintain a longer-lasting hold.

  • @saltyroe3179

    My dad told the story when he was working for Convair on the Atlas ICBM. He was driving out to prototype launch facility with other engineers when the radio announced the weight of the latest USSR satellite. One engineer had been a UK artillery officer in WW2. The ex artillery officer got out his sliderule and calculated the flight time of a USSR ICBM from US detection. It was less than the time the Atlas took to be prepared and launched.
    This led to work to reduce launch time and develop earlier detection.
    Interestingly by time the US had 100 ICBMs, the USSR had only 10. The CIA knew about this, but the information was not publicized to keep public support fir the giant spending.

    The real reason America succeeded where the Soviet Union failed, is the Soviets concentrated on major military and civil projects. Whereas the US did work on Civil project in order to improve commerce and much of the companies worked on creating consumer goods. The US won the culture war as well. More people around the globe wanted US goods more than Soviet goods.

Taylor then explain "Once you've given me $1m, you more likely to give me an additional $20m". Herzfeld then ask so you can build the internet for $21m? Taylor then said "I see why you would think that, but no". "So why you ask for $21m? Taylor then proceed to explained that once the govt realized you've wasted $21m and have nothing to show for, you're more likely to double down to save face and again and again and once more." ....and that's how the internet was built.
