  • Author and peace activist Norman Solomon talks about the double standards in US foreign policy that have smoothed the path for Russia’s inexcusable invasion of Ukraine. The role of the military-industrial-complex in the US is one of the main reasons we lack a single standard for the use of military force and human rights, says Solomon.

These disingenuous mealy mouth apologists for Imperialism is sickening. They need to equate others with their evil to live with themselves. No country or leader who is in a position to stand up would tolerate what Russia was facing. The ruthless belligerence of the west whose destructive intentions towards Russia was explicit in both policy and practice could not be allowed to go any further. It would have been the height of irresponsibility for President Putin to have done any other than he was compelled to do.
This lack of respect for others is pathological.

As center/left voter I, like some 67% of the peoples of the world, side with the Russian people in the conflict. Today, May 9th Russia commemorate the end of WWII. They lost over 20 million and for generations have received little respect from the West. Sadly, the US and the EU/NATO nations again showed the Russian people little respect.
The Russian, on the other, showed great respect to the West and the Asian countries- who lost over 25 million- in their fight against fascist Japan. In regards to the this conflict and even before Putin, Russia was promised no more NATO expansion, but today 30 NATO nations surround Russia.
Western powers like France, Germany, Britain and the US have invaded Russia. So when the US in 2008 invites Ukraine into NATO - Russia got spooked as Prof. Mearsheimer puts it. Then came the 2014 Ukraine coup, and NAZI groups join the police, military and gov't. Plus an eight-year war starts in the Donbas. With NATO and Nazis on their doorsteps plus a war that's killed over ten thousand - the Russian people had to invade.

It's laughable to suggest this is comparable to Africa and Latin America. Western countries/NATO would never attack a nuclear-armed Russia, and Ukraine would probably never be accepted into NATO, because all member states would have to agree, and no one wanted to provoke Russia. First of all, before the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia had friendly relations with the West, NATO and Russia even did joint military maneuvers, but then Putin decided that the West was an adversary and Ukraine had to remain in the Russian sphere of influence, and that's when the trouble began. But I agree that Western countries often behave hypocritically when they themselves violate international law, for example in Iraq, or tolerate when their allies do it, for example Saudi Arabia in Yemen, Israel in Palestine or Turkey in Syria and Cyprus.

UKRAINE: THE POWER OF AN IDEA AND THE PR PRESIDENT
No matter what anyone’s feelings are regarding the rights or wrongs of Russia’s actions in Ukraine ,you have to admire the success of the public relations campaign behind Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The level and supreme coordination of the unlimited support he has received and achieved across Europe is unprecedented.
At its source is the power of a single idea, that in this wicked old world of ours there is still an antiseptic and clear division between good and evil. This idea has almost unlimited mileage in this world which was previously ever-rapidly moving toward total cynicism. Like Live Aid in the Eighties the cause of Ukraine has allowed for a vast upsurge in idealism, a cleansing of the soul by a cathartic anger combined with compassionate grief.
Western humanity has taken Ukraine to its heart, oblivious to any warts that may be transferred in the process. No, it’s warts and all, till death do us part, a marriage ceremony blessed by every liberal institution across the western world. In furtherance of this marriage comes the weaponry to protect it, a sworn duty to assist in the defeat of all those who would tear this great union apart.
Blessed by every high priest that can be found and all those of the secular variety who have newly wiped the blood of the Iraqis, Syrians, Afghans and Libyans from their raiments… to be born again, cleansed by the holy public relations of total, unquestioned belief in their communal rightness.
It is said that up to a hundred public relations companies have been set to work devising strategies and campaigns to deliver the “truth” about every aspect concerning Saint Zelensky and his acolytes, his hand-maidens and supplicants. Every move he makes is choreographed with a precision usually accorded to the high and mighty of this world and to a far greater extent even than for those illustrious figures.
Technology has been brought to bear in every aspect of the bringing of Zelensky’s holy word to an adoring public who hang on his every word. Politicians of all descriptions go dewy-eyed at the mere mention of his name. The only personality that could possible do better and inspire such an outpouring of devotion would be JC himself come down on his fiery chariot to smite the heathens who besmirch his holy name.
For yes, this is a crusade, a mighty army has been recruited, indeed has volunteered. Such is the popularity and public relations success of Mr Z that the entire panoply of great liberal beats of the political, cultural, commercial and social whirls constantly arrive at his feet to touch his hem. (Or perhaps his trouser bottoms… but that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?)
It’s all a tremendous success, a tour de force that social historians will reference for decades to come. A phenomenon to be studied in great detail mapping each triumph along the way…
Meanwhile, in the rather more real world, the Russian military grinds slowly forward tackling each massively fortified village, town and city one by one in Northern Lugansk and the vicinity of Donetsk City. Poposnaya (Popasna), a city of some 20,000 in normal times, the gateway to the more northerly much larger conurbations of Severodonetsk and Lysychank, has just fallen to the Russians. Expert analysis says that these too will fall given time, perhaps a month or a month and a half from now. Russian forces will then descend on the last remaining Ukrainian forces in the vicinity of Donetsk City and they will be eliminated also. That will be it. Game over. The entirety of the Donbass will be secured, one of the prime objectives of the Russian campaign
Will the Zelensky spectacular continue with this news? I don’t know. It’s quite hard to say as the momentum behind it is supremely strong having the near infinite backing of the entirety of western liberal power in both Europe and the USA. Will rump Ukraine be saved by Poland making it a protectorate, a sideways shuffle into the EU? Perhaps.
But in some form or other the show will go on. The power of that idea of good and evil battling it out in a passion play with as simple a plot as can be made possible will have a momentum and dedicated belief system behind it that I can’t see an instant deflation of its big PR balloon happening overnight.
What is most likely is that there will be the briefest of poses as might happen at the greatest party you’ve even been at when someone knocks something over and it sounds like a gunshot. There’s a momentary shocked silence and then the whole shebang kicks off again as if nothing happened, no one got scared, it didn’t reveal any jerks with weak-knees at all, everyone keeps laughing and dancing the night away with gay abandon.
When it is realised that Russia has permanently removed a great chunk from Ukraine I imagine there will be a brief wrinkling of brows and sturdy words of never-ending support for the “sovereignty of Ukraine” and so forth… but the brave willies of the West will certainly do nothing more than pout.
But what a party it will have been! Catharsis will have been achieved. A vast cleansing of the western psyche after the debauchery of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria will have taken place, the communal computer will have had its hard disk memory wiped. What joy. The PR party that saved Ukraine while destroying it will without doubt go on in some form or other, perhaps in a form where a great moral outrage arises due to the sudden influx of gun crimes and terrorist attacks across the most pristine of European capitals. Oh what a party THAT will be!
While, back in Ukraine, a country largely hollowed out, abandoned perhaps by 60% of its original population will have a permanent begging bowl extended to a Europe and USA seeking donors for their own begging bowls.
Perhaps a PR offensive will be called for? But who will pay the piper THEN?
Oh well, it all seemed a good idea at the time.
And what of Mr Z? Where will he end up?
No doubt he’ll be okay. His fans won’t let him down, surely?
I would expect he will become an EU commissioner, or some sort of ‘special adviser’ within that select liberal cabal. They do look after their own you know. So, he’ll be fine. A fresh shirt each day, a chauffeur and sleek black car with tinted windows, a high-security villa or two and a few hundred million euros in the bank.
It just goes to show you what can be achieved these days…

Russia has been invading its neighbors for 20 years. This has nothing to do with nato but 400 year old Russian strategy and geography. Russia has secure borders to the south north and east. Their western frontier however is wide open and flat. So the reason why the Russian empire expanded to the Romanian mountains and tbe German border is that frontier is easier to defend. The reason why the soviet union again expanded to those borders is they are easier to defend, there are actual defensible land forms there.
The reason why putin invaded Ukraine is Warsaw and Moldova are on the other side and its so bad that his cronies actually showed his Moldovan invasion plans live on TV. Not western propaganda, his own idiotic cronies being stupid enough to show the maps live on TV. This has nothing to do with nato "antangonism."
The only reason why an alliance with no offensive clauses (allies can only be called to a defensive ) is a threat to Russia is that they want to invade and conquer the countries that are part of the defensive alliance

Finland is going to join NATO, which means Finland will end up like Ukraine before my life is done in this world no matter who the president is of Russia and anyone who knows history knows full well why. I said yesterday, you don't increase security of all by joining an alliance against those you don't agree with, you increase security by creating a new alliance/institution that includes those you don't agree with, that is the lesson of the formation of the UN, because in reality there is more on which you/we do.
As for this conflict I stand firmly against what has been done by Russia, but I fully understand why it has been done, and I am highly pissed off at the media of our side that has done everything it can to ensure no one understands why, because then they would have to accept we are as much monsters as the monsters in Ukraine.

In 1915 Nahum Goldmann, founder of the World Jewish Congress, wrote a book called the Spirit of Militarism (The original in German is called "Der Geist des Militarismus").
“The historical mission of our world revolution is to rearrange a new culture of humanity to replace the previous social system. This conversion and re-organization of global society requires two essential steps: firstly, the destruction of the old established order, secondly, design and imposition of the new order. The first stage requires elimination of all frontier borders, nationhood and culture, public policy ethical barriers and social definitions, only then can the destroyed old system elements be replaced by the imposed system elements of our new order.
The first task of our world revolution is Destruction. All social strata and social formations created by traditional society must be annihilated, individual men and women must be uprooted from their ancestral environment, torn out of their native milieus, no tradition of any type shall be permitted to remain as sacrosanct, traditional social norms must only be viewed as a disease to be eradicated, the ruling dictum of the new order is; nothing is good so everything must be criticized and abolished, everything that was, must be gone.
After destruction of the old order, construction of the new order is a larger and more difficult task. We will have torn out the old limbs from their ancient roots in deep layers, social norms will be lying disorganized and anarchic so they must be blocked against new cultural forms and social categories naturally re-emerging. The general masses will have been first persuaded to join as equals in the first task of destroying their own traditional society and economic culture, but then the new order must be forcibly established through people again being divided and differentiated only in accordance with the new pyramidal hierarchical system of our imposed global monolithic new world order.
Capitalism must be condemned as a fundamental misfortune caused by the wealth of capitalist power exploiting the false separation between the high rulers and the oppressed exploited masses. The masses must be induced to repudiate the concept of personal wealth and personal rights, this second task will also be solved only by virtue of the great guiding principle of the subordinating militaristic spirit in which superior ranks impose order on inferiors, new world order: “which will bring the true aristocratic principle of “might is right” in that those who can rule - shall rule”.”

Here is a suggestion for extending the discussion about economics and the government policies - that the Wall Street v Main Street dichotomy be elaborated in an explanation of what exactly is happening, namely, what is Main St? Everyone understands that Wall Street represents a group of corporations that people can invest in and possibly earn interest. But, using this as the basis for Trump's election win in 2016, and not in 2020, or the neofascist emotivism of Republicans in the US and in other nations fails to describe what Main St means. I would offer that Main Street is about consumerism, management of workers, and household incomes. The average household income (often with 2-3 workers) is around $65,000. Is this the cause of Republican discontent driving racism, sexism, gun buying, or crime rate, etc? When we contrast Wall St and Main St, we should look at the difference between corporations and proprietors, 2M to 24M respectively in the US! Although these are different organizations, proprietors are found on Main St. I am skeptical that people voted against Hillary in 2016 (she won the popular vote) because she was paid $100k for speaking engagements. Instead, the gender war in the US should be examined more closely for reasons concerning the 2016 vote, along with other factors like the gaming of social media.

Q - USA lobbyist driven foreign policy - Could this be the real enemy?
For example does Lockheed Martin thru lobbying and contributions direct the USA into conflicts?
USA has armed itself (and others) into insanity.
What if a collective effort were directed toward a change to the US lobby system.
    End big money = policy
I have listened to many annalists but not heard this aspect discussed.
    Pete from the third stone.

At 12.30 in the guest reveals his ignorance of the Ukraine situation when he says he cannot see any reason at all for what's going on and this tells me I'll learn nothing from listening to this any further - for this fool to distill it down to USA being hypocritical ( eg. US did it to other countries ergo this is ok) so that's why some feel it provides justification demonstrated his lack of knowledge over Ukraine from 2014 to the current position. Such a shame an intelligent man like this, who understands the menace of the military industrial complex, is just so ignorant of the complexities behind Russia's actions.

what few realise is the we were high jacked at Yorktowne, which was reinforced in 1814, and our Fate sealed with the Federal Reserve Act. Congress and the Executive branch have been controlled for many decades by the City of London bankers, who have meddled in our affairs since Yorktowne, and not only gave us the Judeo-Christian form of religion and mind control, but have using American military muscle and heroic young men, to push their goals since the end of the Civil War! These two guys are flapping their gums and saying little of any appreciable value! Lindsey Graham should be perp-walked to jail for his treasonous remarks about us winning this war between Russia and Ukraine!
