  • Welcome to my kpop video essay series, "Academic K-pop Analysis"! I discuss the TWICE Tzuyu Taiwan flag waving incident or scandal, Tzuyu's apology to China, its influence on the 2016 Taiwanese elections, and the impossible position of K-pop idols. I also discuss concepts like nationalism, geopolitics, and give a mini history lesson about China-Taiwan relations!
Please feel free to leave a comment asking questions, giving your own thoughts, or correcting me if you think I’ve made any mistakes! A lot of these (very complex) ideas have been simplified for brevity’s sake, but I hope I haven’t misrepresented any of these scholars.
Written, edited, researched, and voiced by myself.

I see at this point that she had two main options the first option on jyp wanted to advice that tzuyu will make a public apology to calm down the Chinese and Taiwanese people somewhat or the second option that she won't allow it or she won't address it because Chinese and Taiwanese people were still angry at her then it will go back to normal and then as a slip up business as usual a lot of youtubers have done this for a couple of years it will be a shame to tzuyu go down that road whether she is in the right or in the wrong and for better or for worse but I think business wise it is the most acceptable as well

I think you've done a wonderful job explaining the context rather than just saying "China is bad and Taiwan is good". Tzuyu holding the ROC flag was merely a catalyst event to decades of unresolved geopolitical tension between the two governments/region. Chinese netizens and the Taiwanese media clearly took advantage of this (for their own agendas) and threw both their political ideology onto this incident and thereby escalating the situation. Unfortunately, Tzuyu became a victim... No 16 year old should be put in that position... I think the South Korean broadcasting channel and JYP are also partly to blame for failing to realise that having country flags could cause serious contentious issues...

@@KimKpopYT i would LOVE to see a video about korean and japanese relations in kpop. it's a really nuanced topic that i find very interesting because one on hand, i understand why many koreans feel wary of japanese people considering the atrocities committed by the japanese imperial army in korea, but on the other hand it's not like japanese idols had literally anything to do with that considering how long ago it was. obviously there's more to it than just that but yeah that would be so interesting to see it discussed from an academic standpoint. i just discovered your channel btw and i'm loving it so far!

JYP forced a Taiwanese teen in K-pop to publicly apologize for waving her country's flag in a musical video, to avoid their access in Chinese consumer market from being banned, can't afford to fall behind NBA .😁😁

It was discussed with her parents, plus what do u expect the agency to do , any other thing they’d would resolve into political issues ?! Like I know she was forced and it’s sad but it was the best decision, if she didn’t apologize what would’ve happened politically, or to Twices career as a whole !?

@@Remarkable269 nothing cuz they're located in South Korea. Twice will probably get less revenue as Chinese people won't watch it but that's all since It's literally only China making a big deal nowhere else lol. Long live the Taiwan Nation. As an American I support Taiwan as a nation unto itself. They are the True Chinese and have been ever since Mao Ze Dong decided to destroy the Chinese History and Culture of the mainland. Taiwan still uses the original Chinese character where mainland uses simplified. Taiwan preserves and celebrates their past culture. Which is over 5000 years old. The mainland only has about 70 years history and has done it's best to completely destroy the history, art and culture of China.

Regarding, “small,” : Two facets are not included: 1. The new (2020.07.01) National Security Law, and 2. The transforming trauma suffered by the TWICE members themselves. (Compare Huang An to the Big Bad Wolf in the story of The Three Little Pigs.)

This was a really interesting video. It's a really complex topic.
The quote you brought up, that said that "kpop stars are national representatives, but also in an intimate relationship with their foreign audiences" brings cultural appropriation to my mind. If you are still making videos, I'd like to hear what you have to say about that topic. I know a lot of kpop fans have already commented on it, but your videos are always well researched and much more nuanced

China 🇨🇳 should stop complaining like a child since their country is much larger than the other 3 countries I previously mentioned and that should be enough.

Great piece. Another aspect im curious to explore is just what factors compel audiences of these fandom toward more asian or eastern celebrities such as kpop or jpop, more passionately than they do western ones. Is it how open and liberated western ones are? What biases do non asians have toward asians. Or Koreans if we wanna be specific.i am yet to encounter an article regarding this personally

@Aditya Srivastava racism is very strong in the US. Im worlds away but i can see it from where i sit day to day. So it's sad but, nothing new sadly. Part of how my curiosity actual came about. Is it racial bias, color bias, is it a factor at all if any? If it is, just how much do westerners not realize their own racial bias towards the more fair skinned asians, and at the same time have negative ideas about the east that surround china or korea.

China still to this day partially controls Taiwan like how we say our nation like in all the documents we ever filled out it’s super rare to Taiwanese as an option for race. The fact this hurt Tzuyu back then greatly enrages me. NO ONE should be oppressing anyone sure the Chinese in general has been divided but this is not ok
